This is the type of toy I loved most as a kid (and today), a group of colorful, unique characters. These guys, the Micronaut Aliens, Starroid Raiders, the Cantina Aliens and the Bounty Hunters from Empire. They really fired up my imagination to create all kinds of stories for each of them.
Now hearing that there essentially were no reference materials or input/standards guides from Paramount, I’m actually more impressed with what a labor of love the Mego Star Trek line was. As you point out this was before the days of on screen perfect accuracy. The toy just had to communicate to the kid what it was meant to represent. And these worked oh so well. Heck a large number of us didn’t know the Gorn was green instead of brown. Most of us were still watching on black and white. The figure captured the spirit of what we perceived the character to be. How did Mego get as much right as they did? No style guides? No direct guidance from Paramount? They couldn’t exactly pop in the DVD box set and go frame by frame? Somebody in their design department was watching the show every time it aired in reruns and taking notes. Which is probably why the main cast looked so good. They saw them every show, while the rarely seen aliens had a heavy filter of memory and more than a bit of a game of telephone. Other than using old Starlog magazines what else did they have?
Thanks for another super video of Mego history. You're right that many of us didn't care that the Mego Gorn didn't look like the one on the TV show. I still don't care. I just love the action figure. The only new Mego Star Trek figure I have is the "accurate" Gorn. The aliens display very nicely in the Enterprise playset. The only Mego Star Trek figure I don't have is the Romulan. I'll start saving up for it, just like I did for Rahan. I also have the Command Communications Console, and it "reacts" with the Batman console. It's interesting that elderly actress Meg Wyllie played The Keeper in "The Cage". Her voice was dubbed. And I always enjoy the "Arena" episode. It works with the Lizard/Ape/Klingon Gorn too!
Great video. One of my favorite waves of any toyline (even surpassing Star Raiders). My KMart and PX never seemed to have any of these left, when they even got them in. But, as much as I wanted Cheron, I just had to settle for painting my extra Aquaman head with sharpies and whiteout. And that was, as Andy Griffith would say, "Pitiful, Pit-i-full".
The Mego "Neptunian" recently made an appearance as the penal administrator of Neptune Station in IDW's comic mini-series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken" (issue #4) by the Tipton brothers. Teusta Fonn the Neptunian was a pioneer of the Mirror Universe's agonizer technology. And his security squad were... brown-skinned Gorn creatures!
Great video ! Just found your channel , definate subscription . I hope you'll do the figures for the Star Treck crew as well as I had all of them icluding Lt. Uhura , I got shit from my friends back in the 70's for having a Girl doll ! . Am really looking forward tp watching your videos. Thank you and keep up the great work you're doing .
Hello, congrats on ur latest numbers, impressive... I remember 1975/76 going to Kmart & seeing Kirk & Spock on the bridge & wanting them so badly. Our old Kmart building has long been abandoned & repurposed, but I could show u exactly where that bridge sat even now. Love the nostalgia of ur channel & great narration. I’ve been subbed for some time now. As a personal favor, I only ask that u check out my 2 “commercials” I’ve made for my up & coming channel. Thanks, Jav.
For the younger people out there below 45, I don't think you have a true appreciation for how impactful TV syndication was especially for the Star Trek property. I grew up watching these characters in The mid-1970s with my neighbours and my parents, not realizing the show was already almost 10 years old. When you consider the risk Mego took buying into the license and creating these amazing figures that they did, it's pretty spectacular, from a collector / historical standpoint we're very lucky to have so many cool pieces from the time. Sure Kenner took the leap doing the Star Wars license and they got ncredible reward out of it, so by the time 1980 came there was a proven track method, but it stems back from Mego.
I remember in the early 1980's kids in grade school talking about creepy Twlight Zone episodes, a show that was nearly 20 years old at the time! What 20 year old show would kids be talking about now? Sponge Bob!
I have to agree with you , being born in 1970 , it wasnt until 74-5 I came to undrstand that the show was no longer being made . The only new stuff I saw was the cartoon ( which really should've gone another season at least ) untilThe Motion Picture . Treck has been one of the few series made whose influence has extended far beyond what anyone could've imagined a TV show to influence
I had the Gorn and he was always just a member of the crew. I guess the phaser and communicator and the fact that I had not seen all the episodes threw me off. The cartoon had other alien members of the crew so I just figured he was another one!
I never had any Star Trek Megos, want them though I did. There was only so much money to go around and that money was always going to go to World's Greatest Super Heroes.
Something that I have a problem with are the people who bought up the 2 pack of Star Trek guys with Aliens and they're selling them on eBay as Vintage figures, I know that many of the figures were lucky to have been bought up by even 100-500 sales was what one Mego book said about the Aliens. So I am very critical for the ones being sold and even especially on card as they can make laser copied cards to be priced as though wow on a unpunched card now it's worth 5,000$ or more. I once saw a dealer getting arrested at a toy show in Victoria for selling counterfeit beanie babies and Star Wars figures.
My Mr Spock pulled double duty as Prince Namor fighting my Hulk figure . I was always disappointed in that The Thing and The Hulk were smaller than the other Megos when They should have been bigger
Not accurate but still cool figures. This demonstrates something I think Mego needs to do more of with the creative reuse of existing parts and make more parts designed with reuse in mind. Whether He-Man or later day LEGO minifigure series there's a potential there to produce an original character series cheaply.

My favorite aliens are the Andorian, and the Keeper. Very cool video. Bob.G
thanks, great choices. Blue guys rule!
The 2019 Mego Gorn is OUTSTANDING!!!! I have one in my collection.
I agree, it's the best take thus far.
I loved the Neptunian, he was so unique. He doubled as a monster for the Superheroes to battle.
this must be one of the most gorgeous figure lines ever made in toy history
I'm a big fan!
The gorn has a phaser and communicator lol.
It’s a half-Klingon, half-Gorn that joined Starfleet. Yeah, that’s it!
Excellent! I always wished that Balok was a real character anyway. If you happen to have that toy, he's a keeper! ;)
ha!
"Scene from 'Arena'"
Nice!
It made me laugh!
I concur. A definite appeal as a kid and now. Just cool alien factor.
I have the Neptunian loose complete and got it graded by CGA. I love it.
it's a nice figure.
Great Job as ALWAYS !
they are still awesome !!
totally agree.
I just stumbled across this video and now I need to see part 1 stat. ;) Great work as always.
thanks for watching, part 2 will be quite soon.
Back in the 80's I went to a clearance sale at K mart and snagged Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty & Uhura for half price.
I still have them to this day.
Look forward to part 2, some of the best figures Mego ever produced in that wave.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Well done! :)
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your clips and I 💟 vintage action figures...these guys are great

Neptunian outfit looks same as ones Mego used for their Green Goblin World”s Greatest Heroes figures...
That was literally the first thing that popped in my head was so it's the Green Goblin! LoL
Neptunian killed Yeoman Rand in the lost episode of STAR TREK.
The Neptunian episode of TOS only aired once, it was so horrifying they banned it forever. It's existence was Mandela effected out of the timeline.
Careful, you know too much! Desilu has eyes and ears everywhere.
The one where they time-travel to 1988 and discover stuff like Nintendo and the 6 members of the Simpson family, including the weird alien Graggle?
@@176questions Some alternate-timeline theorists speculate that the Neptunian and Graggle are one in the same.
Always great content keep up good work
Grate job.
thanks!

I heard about that, awesome tribute!

In the reboot Kirk it getting Jiggy with 2 of them in his bed room. Enter Darkness
I hope they make her and Lt. Arex. He was cool. I'd buy that one.
Really interesting

I had all of these characters in this video, I used them as super villains to play with against the Marvel and Dc figures, great memories.

Kirk keeps his friends close and his enemies closer.
Love Your Videos.... is there going to be a Star Trek Aliens Part 2?
00:57 "...starring Carroll O'Connor as Captian Kirk..."
I never had any Star Trek Megos, want them though I did. There was only so much money to go around and that money was always going to go to World's Greatest Super Heroes.
Miss these.I always had a few of these sround.Trek for me ,though i had S.W. also.
They were like....hmmm no naked Mugato.
possibly?
I had all but the Romulan...he was never in any of our stores
Hi like the Anderaions
me too.

Don't get me wrong, my number one collection is GiJoe Adventure Team and some military but my other love is Mego everything Mego.
Very fun vid^^
👏
The keeper was based on the managery.
My Mr Spock pulled double duty as Prince Namor fighting my Hulk figure . I was always disappointed in that The Thing and The Hulk were smaller than the other Megos when They should have been bigger
I found The Neptunian at a grocery store in 1979.

My not be an actual star trek 👽 but the neptunian is pretty cool looking.
toy? The Neptunian. I wish i had him. He's more like the Gorn than the Gorn figure.
Gorn
excellent choice.
Why is the Gorn so dark? They got the color of The Lizard from Spider-Man right.
EDIT: I see why. I'm fond of the Andorian.
