Grind up all the old paint bits into glitter sized chips and mix them into clear medium and use it as a rainbow glitter glaze.

That makes a lot of sense especially since it sounds like you paint daily or multiple times a week. I paint just as a pastime (especially oils since they're new to me. If I have commissions they're watercolor or acrylic) so I put my extra paint in little containers to use later.

You’re the first person to answer this question on why some artists have paint left on their pallette! I tried it once and discovered that the for me, new paint dried out faster than if I cleaned off my palette. But thanks for explaining your process.

I’m glad I could help! I think it’s one of those practices that depends on the amount of paint you use & how often you’re able to paint. It’s not for everyone - I used to clean my palette clean everyday but about 5 years ago I got this glass palette & found this is by far the best way for me! I think the best system is whatever works for the artist. 🩷

The best method Ive found is to not place fresh paint directly onto my palette. I use a small paint caddy for fresh squirts that can easily be transferred to a fridge at the end of the day. The only paint that remains on my mixing palette is the accumulated "mud" mix at the end of a session.

You’re welcome! 🩷🩷 I felt like after the response to the first video I wanted to do a deeper dive & show all the waste I generate. I don’t think it’s the part of art making people normally want to show but I’m always curious to see how other artists manage it 😝

I guess you could try making some coral themed 3D painting or craft with those bit and piles.

I couldn't do this because I think it might trigger hoarding tendencies in me. I like to lean up at the end of the workday as much as possible so I tend to only put out small amounts of paint at a time.

Can you share what that little palette box thing was that you put in your freezer? Appreciate all the info here!

It’s a part of the krydrufi art kit. You can find it on my link in bio: linktr.ee/dorisroseart

How long does it take for a recently used paint layer on your palette to dry up to where you can't paint with it again if it isn't put in the freezer? I live in the desert of Colorado at over 4000ft elevation and my paint only stays applyable for about 18hours maximum, beyond that it is semi-cured and it won't load up a brush. I never leave leftover paint out, I scrape it into old rx pill bottles and then I label them.

For me it depends on the colour. My earth colours/umbers dry quite quickly (within 2 days or so) so I tend not to put much out on the palette. Other colours, like white, cad red, or permanent alizarin crimson take weeks or more. I’d say the average for me is about 3-4 days which is why I freeze the paint if I’ll not be back to my palette for any longer than that.
