A little tip for anyone making katanas…
I recently finished tanjiros katana by the same modeler and I’m starting other swords soon as well and I’ve found that when fitting the tang in the handle, spending a lot of time sanding down the tang to get it to fit helps a lot. Also never force parts together, sh*t’ll break.

While making this myself, I realized that if you put the blade in Slic3r and mirror around the Y-axis, it puts the text on the correct side. Also, for some reason the text was already mirrored so this way the text is actually correct. If you need to make a second one keep this is mind! Great video thanks for the inspiration!

A wooden dowel would be a good option for some added strength, without risking setting off something like metal detectors!
It wouldn't be as strong, but it'd probably be more rigid than the strength you'll get with layer adhesion on FDM prints.

For better durability, you could always add a carbon fibre rod, inserted in the core.

A tip for anyone making swords of any kind with 3d printers.
You can both add weight and stability by simply adding a hole throughout the whole model. How? Well, essentially you will use a wooden rod / thin metal pipe as the center of the sword which will go into said hole. Super glue will be enough to hold it in place afterwards, at least from my experience. This can also add weight to the sword if you want it to be more hefty.
Edit: he mentioned metal rods at the end. As I said tho, wood is also a good option and gives it more stability, especially if your sword needs to be printed vertically on the 3d printer.

I hadn't thought to make the end of the Katana lighter. I'm currently working on Zoro's katana myself, and the weight of the sword caused it to snap even though I fused them together with a solder iron. I decided to melt a hole into the ends and fit a tiny dow rod inside, but this caused some of the details to melt off the blade, which I tried to fix with putty I got from a hardware store.

If you're just starting to build/paint things make sure your spray paint never starts spraying on the object your painting. Start away from the object spray and pull across. Also stay about 10 inches away while spraying.

I wonder if even a 3D printed katana would be con friendly. Maybe it depends on the con itself. My most recent cosplay was a samurai Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat. Kinda my own take on him. My original plan was to 3D print the katana with clear PETG but then I decided against it and made it out of foam. It was con crunch time and I needed it fast. I may try 3D printing one at some point.

  • @BenNagle

You could always use a wooden dowel rod through it. Would help support it and not set off the metal detector. Not as strong as metal though so don't swing to hard!
