Three Sisters- beans suck nitrogen from the air and puts it into the soil. The corn sucks up the nitrogen and provides a trellis for the beans to climb. The squash spreads out and smothers weeds that may compete with the corn or beans. The 3 sisters fall under what farmers call companion planting. For instance, you can plant onion next to most anything, except beans or peas. Onion and other alliums are good natural big repellent for crops.

Yay, I'm excited for these AP US videos! I didn't actually take the AP US course at my school, because I already have AP Chem & Lang. However, I do plan on taking the AP US history test just to see what I get. Also, I wanted to THANK YOU so much because I really think your videos helped me pass my AP Euro test (I got a three)!! I guess it was worth all the dreams about French Revolution that I had..
I just watch this stuff because it's interesting. When I went to school in the 1960's I can only remember one teacher that came close to Mr. Richey's charisma. Thank You sir! Thumbs up
This video is from a few years ago, but I believe out of the arctic tribes mentioned in this video the ones grouped under the Eskimo label (Aleut and Yup'ik, as well as Inuit) generally prefer their tribal names to the word Eskimo. I know there is intercommunity discourse over this, though, and I am by no means an expert nor an arctic native, so take this with a grain of salt. "Eskimo" is commonly used as an umbrella term for the arctic tribal groups, but it originated from a term that the Algonquin group used to refer to the Inuit that was either "raw flesh eaters" or "snowshoe-lacers". The latter wouldn't be rude, but the common belief right now is that it was the former. The word Eskimo has been used in a derogatory fashion to refer to arctic tribes, though, so regardless of its origin, the respective tribal names or another term should be used when possible if you're not an arctic native. Thanks and have a good APUSH course (since I'm assuming that's why all of us are here)!
This is my new favourite channels on youtube... Ive decided right after your video comparing Malcolm X and MLK. Great videos of well researched and presented content. Thank you Tom!
Although it's not as specific as I would've liked, I'm glad to see this topic being addressed. I do have a question: What defines a distinct ethnic group? 50 seems like a pretty small number for what's now the US. Can you give an example? Thanks!
The perception among many that the content has changed significantly is an unfortunate myth, IMO. At the end of the day, US History is US History. As for this particular video, I made it SPECIFICALLY to address content which is emphasized more heavily on the new exam than on the previous exam. So it's not a question of content changing, per se, as much of a question of emphasis.

I recently visited many ancient Native American ruins in the state of Arizona. The southwest is a very interesting region, especially for me as I'm from the east coast. Tuzigoot, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki, and Montezumas Castle were the sites I visited.
I'm Afro Bahamian and am 23% Native American and what I would like to know what I haven't gotten is what the Native American culture was like without the Europeans. Like what they hunted, religious believes. I heard they tried to teach the Europeans to bathe when they first met them but they refused just more.
@LELE My Name is Cerise Winter Song which is pronounced in our language "Pupon Kutomawôk" I am a Montaukett, Shinnecock, and Algonquin and I speak Algonquin in/Mohegan We are from the NorthEast Long Island New York area, we eat seafood( Clams, Oysters, Mussels, Eels, Shrimp, Etc), three sisters, turtle, they hunted rabbit, buffalo, elk, deer, bear, beaver, and many fish. The Longhouse for us was used for meetings and gatherings, we used sweat lodge for prayer. Our housing were Tipis and Wigwams when we got colonized we were on reservations in crappy houses, a few of our people died of starvation because our regular food was taken from us just so that they could take our land, and our regular healthy diet became rashings and things that we were not familiar with from the Euros, so we had to make do with what we had, which also killed a lot of us because of not knowing how to use these weird products that the government gave us, as far as our religion, we really wouldn't call it a religion because the Europeans brought over their catholic and christianity for us to be forced to learn. Our grandparents and great grandparents were stripped of our culture and were put into boarding schools, Our people were forced to speak English, dress like the Euros, our hair was cut and we were supposed to act like the Euros because if not you were starved, beaten to death, or killed. We weren't allowed to speak our language or do smudging, or sweat lodgeNothing Native cultural related. We weren't allowed to speak our native language Etc. Everything was stripped from our culture. For religion we know that God is real, we know that he made the earth and everything in it and for us Native American Indigenous, he is called "The Great Spirit" we know that he is our provider and our lifeline. I hope this helps your questions, if you would like to know anything else please ask. No one can tell us about who we are and what we do or how we live but US. and there are still many millions of us still alive living on this land that The Great Spirit has given to our people. No matter how many try to hide the truth about what they really did to us, not just LIES in a fairytale book called social studies or history books!! We can speak for ourselves and will tell the truth at all costs!! and P.S. We are NOT SAVAGES!! We are people who live off of what The Great Spirit has given us which is the Mother Earth.
If you every need real answers to questions about Native Indigenous people of this land, please ask a REAL Native not a European, They will Never tell you the truth, they just make up what their perception of us is. and that's terrible!

Well looks like I found my new study method for AP United States History. For all you wondering I'm a sophomore taking honor classes along with a few regular ones and an AP class.
Great question, so it depends on what region you come from northwest speak different than us northeast like the annishinabe/Dine tribes speak the same maybe a few words are different but are alike just like on my tribal side the Algonquin, Shinnecock, Mohegan, and the Montaukett speak the same language, its just some letters or pronunciations are a tad different. but we understand each other very well, when I was little I learned some Lakota, too which is helpful to speak amongst tribes. I hope this helps
All of the history teachers in my Highschool use your videos for just about every section we do, and it's great. Also what's the name of the band who's music you use??
Glad to hear it! This is a (non-exclusive) custom studio track I purchased when I started my channel. It's not anything any band did for public release.
May we comment on unresolved issues in Native American history? For example, my understanding is that historians differ on population numbers at the time of Columbus.
I don’t know if I should criticize where you get your information or your interpretation of said information but, Culture is the customs, art, social institutions, etc. of a nation or group of people. I don’t know if that was conveyed in this video correctly. It was almost a parallel of me saying A white man is defined by his ability to work and and adapt. That doesn’t convey his beliefs, or the society he lives in. I hope that book he’s referring to is more in depth than that.
Exactly!! I'm Native and listening to this garbage is hilarious!! he forgot so many parts like how they killed, raped, and scalped heads just to steal the land, after massive murders they had the bodies piled up and had the nerve to have a Hugh feast right there next to the bodies!! and they would take the babies and cut their heads off and feed them to the dogs. so much genocide among Natives its ridiculous!! Truth is more important than a white man telling LIES about US!!
in my tribe we never used the longhouse for the cold weather! we used it for meetings and gatherings to talk about the native chief and council meetings so that living in there sounds like BS to me because we did have our own homes to keep warm by fire. and we do know how to control the fire obviously.we use fires for many things not just a so called longhouse. All I know is growing up going to the longhouse was NOT for a whole tribe to keep warm for the winter, it was for meetings and chief council gatherings to talk!
