Great review on the 1st gen Eclipse! I used to work at a Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep and Eagle dealership from 95 to 97. I remember driving the 2nd generation Talons and wanting one really bad! I currently own a 4th generation Mitsubishi eclipse with the 2.4 5 speed manual trans.
I will always have a special place in my heart for this car, it was at the beginning of the import explosion and stood out as one of the few 4WD 4 cylinder cars, making it one of the few imports that could tear off the line better than most Trans ams and corvettes and I have always loved the interior for some reason, so nice.
@@NissanTy It got ruined by F&F that's why you see a lot of 2G's with ugly chrome rims and bodykits double decker wings and the stupid chrome tail lights which makes the back look the face of a spider and I consider the 1G Eclipse as my favorite and the best because it's so light compared to the 2G's and 3G's and we are not going to talk about the 4G's also the 1G has pop-up headlights aftermarket ?? no problem swap a 4G63T from an EVO 3 4 5 6 or 7 GSR with the transmission included and you can take some aftermarket available for the EVO
Sweet man. I have a 91 talon tsi awd 5spd and it's just great. I daily a 2014 fiesta st and every time i get in the talon it feels like a pig. However it does handle well and when you go about 3/4 throttle in second then you realize why its good. 3 inch intake and exhaust, 3 inch gm mass airflow from 96. Safc2 controller with evo injectors. At 17 lbs it puts about 300 to the ground. Also extremely reliable.
DUDE! im not gunna lie, super stoked to be watching some new car reviews. watching these videos actually makes me want to drive cars i never looked twice at before.
Awesome! Was the first car I wanted too. I've still never driven a GSX. Probably never will be able to. Got me a 3000GT VR4 though. So There's one off the list.
come on man don't post this video, now your going to have all the kids want one.. let the old folks have something to remember the 90's by and they are not commonly mistaken for 240. Its just kids don't know what they are..so lets keep it that way.
You're definitly a car review person, you're other videos are good but these are so well done. When I found this channel that's the only reason I would watch.
Big thumbs up for this video. My first car was a 1991 Eclipse GS (5 speed) in 2002. I was 17 and had a blast driving it! Very hard to find these nowadays.
Yeah Chris has came a long way me and him went to high school together really cool guy and it was awesome to see his car get reviewed! Keep up the good work David!
It makes me happy to see you review more cars, especially in my area of GA, after a year of watching your channel, I never imagined I could watch your videos and recognize where you are driving, like 5min from my house! Keep up the work and my wagon can be reviewed anytime! Just give me a heads up!
Awesome Review David, long time Mitsubishi owner, have had several 1G DSM's over the years. Great cars when you drive them and take care of them right, a good friend of mine basically taught me how to work on cars properly by letting me help him build his 1000+awhp Talon (Video of it racing a Liter bike on my channel). Strict Maintenance and quality parts is definitely the secret to making a 90's Mitsubishi reliable. There was a time where the 1G DSM was the king of underdogs, killing 4 digit power Supras, and Twin turbo Vipers on the street's back in the day...Most of the owners and builders of those DSM's now own most of the well known GTRs/Shops you see setting records on youtube.
Interesting review; the problem with reviewing cars that are 20+ years old is the baggage. DSMs, especially 1G cars back in their prime were very reliable cars, both stock and modified- WHEN THEY WERE MODIFIED CORRECTLY BY THOSE THAT KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING. The issue was after these car were older, racked up lots of miles and abuse and were modified by multiple amateurs cutting corners. This is true with any of the classic imports- 240SX, Preludes, Civics, etc, and it’s now happening to those bug-eyed WRXs and Evo 8s. No car or engine is impervious to deferred maintenance, endless clutch drops, or a barrage of eBay parts stuck on by a 16 year old in the middle of the night. And 1g cars rarely if ever crank-walked; 96-early 98 cars could.
This makes me miss my 99 gsx. I kept it pretty much stuck just installed an apexi exhaust and a b.o.v. Lasted me 180k, kind of sad what Mitsubishi is turning into now. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
I had as my first car a solid white 96 GS then i found a slightly beaten to hell 98 GST i fixed what was wrong with the car and i had two second gen DSM's and now i currently own an 05 GT that is my baby lol Im looking into buying an Evo X when i can find a decent one that hasnt been battered and abused engine wise.
My buddy test drove a used 1st gen talon back in the late 90's. He came and picked me up and we drove it around for a bit. It was a really fun little car.
Lol, they are very reliable. SO many people buy them because they can be had for cheap, and as he said in the video, they cut corners and the car breaks. It gave DSMs a very unfair reputation. When the car is built right, and money is spent on GOOD tuning, they last. They can be bulletproof even. I beat my talon up, never gave me a problem or left me stranded.
+Jangroyvia Creslovinia working at gm dealer (ik ironic bc I'm a ford guy) I still don't give dsm's that excuse bc I see people RAGGING those LS engines and those 3.8 engines and they still run. That's reliability. It's appalling what people make Chevy engines go through. (Or any American car for that matter. Not saying ALL Chevy engines are good etc the Equinox 4 cylinder engine is complete shit)
Sure but they aren't putting massive turbo's and run 35lbs of boost on the stock block are they? Plus the Ebay market is huge for these cars. People cheaply mod them and expect them to last then bitch when it breaks.
+WarriorPaxo crankwalk doesnt happen to everyone... hasnt happened to me on my 7bolt block with 120k miles. I've also met plenty of others that haven't had that issue either.
Love this!!!!! Very clean DSM, thank you so much for the upload man..... I watched this with a smile..... props to that owner for keeping this legend alive and clean.
I owned a 91 gst I did a front light change so it was then a 91 and 1/2 as they were dubbed I loved my Eclipse I didn't love how nobody could build me a transmission that would work very long.. shrugs its a long story but 2 rebuilds three different cases and one trans used I put in myself with new clutch, cables, flywheel throw out, and then it was still giving me some trouble.. I got tired of fighting it, but when it was running right I was in love with it .. awesome review.. nice to see one still going well and putting a smile on a face.. mine was black inside stock.. kinda rare interior I think hardly ever see black inside. Anyway this brought back some memories so thanks man :)
Exactly! People always complain about cars and reliability. DSM got a very bad rep, but I love it. Give the DSM's to me if you don't want them :) Have always repaired my cars when they break, it is a part of car ownership.
Hey David thanks for the DSM love! I have a 94 Talon that I love. Just got done with a fresh rebuild on a tranny and clutch. And am currently putting a fresh head and HG on. It's lightly modded, about 300-320HP. If you're ever on the west coast... come take a drive! Parts out here where I am are plentiful! lol
Happy to see you do a review on a Dsm its awesome I have my 1GB talon witch is the 2g eclipse got it when I was 14 and still have and now I'm 26 .. Was my first car I bought and it was a tsi fwd still in a very good shape for the year it is my interior is mint no cracks no fades 😁 .. But as always stay blessed David !!!
Love my 91 GSX. 164k on the dash. Clean title. Small upgrades. Bigger turbo, fuel injectors , bigger fuel pump, Ecm link for tuning, boost gauge, upgraded front mont intercooler, and custom 2.5” downpipe full exhaust, only negative on the interior is the ceiling pad is missing everything is near mint. Set up just like this one with the same wheels. Panda scheme with black wheels.. yeah not that you ask haha
My mom owned two Talons, a 1990 non turbo she bought brand new and a 1991 TSi turbo fwd. the 91 was white on white and was the first manual transmission car I ever drove. I took my road test in that car!!! such cools little cars!
The DSM Laser was actually the second generation of the Laser, even thought it was the same as a first gen Eclipse and Talon. The first gen laser was basically the same thing as a turbo Daytona. Good video david! Nice car.
My white 94 Eclipse is still my favorite car ever. I'm so mad at myself for getting rid of it. It was so much fun to drive and looked great. Man I miss my baby! 😢😢
Love the review! This car makes me feel nostalgic. I grew up when these cars were just affordable enough to buy. You forgot the best part of 90s cars like the eclipse the AC vent under the steering wheel aka "nut coolers"😎 as always great job!!!
1991 total rebuild GSX, stage 1 to stage 2 drive-train with evo 1st gear (TeamRip), 420-450 hp total rebuild motor, only original parts block and crank, all of the mitsi problem stuff replaced with after market stuff, total repaint with body tear-down, total after market suspension to include Megan racing coil-overs, all tubing, hoses, bushings, replaced with new after market, 0 to 60 approx. 3.5 seconds. Drivetrain converted to 93-99, as no parts available for 90-91, and 4 bolt rearend. my 4th and last....luv this car
Still have my first car, a 95 Eagle Talon TSi that I now race, DSM's are such fun cars and really teach you how to work on a car. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
Memories, bought a new 98' GST and within 2 years I had a Forced Performance Reds turbo, HKS 272 cams, ported head, 3 inch turbo back Thermal Research ex Quaife diff, Tial wastegate vented to the atmosphere (that would get your attention at full throttle) and quite a bit of other go fast parts installed as well. Tuned it with a DSM link (the original version). That thing was a beast on the highway with the long gears it had. To have 467 whp in the year 2000 and only weighing 3k lbs (the fwd's were lighter then the awd's) it hurt a lot of feelings and was a handful at full boost.
Great review! It made me happy because I am getting close to finishing a build on a red 91 gsx that looks just like this one. We are shooting for 450 at the wheels.
Makes my day Davids a DSM lover, I hope one day I can give you mine to review......when its running right lol. Dsm's are sooo under rated and people that haven't owned them will never get why.
The Eclipse, Talon, & Laser where marketed as entry level sports cars. Power out put was measured @ the tire’s and vastly underrated to keep insurance premiums low because they wanted to attract the younger crowd.
Great video, really enjoyed it! I'm a fellow 1g GSX owner, and I love seeing videos like this, it gives a lot of validity to these cars and shows people that they're not all shitboxes. I know you said the car has BC coilovers on it, I'm curious what are the specs on them? The car looks like it rides really nicely. One thing to point out: there was never a non-turbo AWD DSM in Europe, or anywhere else for that matter. There was a Galant GSX, which was sold in the US, and is even rarer than the GVR4, and that was non-turbo AWD, but that's it. Most DSM's in Europe were a 2.0L non-turbo FWD, some very rare exceptions of AWD turbo models were imported in...they were called the Eclipse GSR-4 instead of GSX.
After posting this I began to doubt my knowledge a little bit. I did see that Wikipedia mentions a GS DOHC AWD version sold in Europe. In almost 20 years of being into these cars, I've never seen or heard of that. I'm still skeptical about its existence.
Thanks for the reply! The ride looked really smooth in the video. Is is actually that smooth? I really like your car. It made me want to put my 1g back to stock, minus suspension and cooling mods. Haha
+Tony Bird they are awesome coils, little stiff if the dampering is to high, but on a soft setting. Feels like Oem. When he did the review the coils were only a week old, since than they have worn in and feel much better
I had a 1991 1.8 SOHC that was slow as molasses, but I bought it with 42,000 (!!!) original miles and after some initial maintenance it ran like a top. The interior was like stepping into another dimension it was so perfect.
i used to LOVE killing these things with my '63 Bug back in HS in the 90's! There weren't too many stock vehicles that could touch me though, 14's back then was quick.
So glad you finally reviewed a DSM :) now time to find a decent built one with 600-700 awhp to review. Also if you feel like reviewing a 1gb TSi AWD, and you're ever in Ontario Canada... I have one with 58k all original miles that has no idea what rust or snow or salt or rain or clear coat peel means.... Complete garage queen, but like you said... You just don't find them in this condition anymore!
+ThatDudeInBlue phenomenal review, dude! 👍👍 I'm personally super stoked for you finally being able to find a good [running] DSM. I've been waiting for you to review an Eclipse/Lazer/Talon since I subscribed roughly two years ago. That's coming from a dude who massively prefers Subie. Anyhow, sweet review dude. Good to see you're doing better now.
DSMs are absolutely reliable when done right. Considering how old these are now and how many owners a lot of them have had, it's hard to find a proper one. But believe me they are fun, and it's too easy to make HP with them.
I had a 1991 GSX. That car was awesome. I wish I would have kept it. My first AWD and my first turbo car!
My dad had a burgundy 91 gsx that he sold right as I got my driver license. I'll never forgive him
Next you gotta do a 2G GSX
I got a 98 GSX with 90k on it
DSM, crushing hopes and dreams since...
... Nevermind, it's on jackstands again.
I laughed pretty good at that one.😂
Lol mine been crushing every car it comes up against for years.
had a 91 awd talon can confirm this is true... i never even got to register and drive mine :(
Took me 4 years to complete. I immediately messed up the transmission racing a Hayabusa, lol
see crank, see crank walk
94 thousand miles, $2500???????????? Who is this lucky bastard.
Ik this doesn't relate but I got a bmw e46 for that.
Ik this doesn't relate but I got a bmw e46 for that.
+Pablo Santy cool but this is way better than a bmw
They go for this cheap all the time. I picked up mine with 69k miles for $2200
I got a 90 GST with 85k for 750!!
Thanks for watching guys!
Who would've thought out of all the car reviews to break on me...this one did fantastic all day. Stay awesome!
Awesome. Try to find a working Conquest/Starion now. lol

Brandon Spain Not cleaner than my 98 GSX was 80k off of original old guy owner

Least I'm not the only one.
Doesn't seem controversial to me. That was basically my favorite car ever. Needless to say I had a 97 GS.
The 1st gen had a slightly stronger motor though, most guys with 2nd gen go for the 7 bolt swap.

I finally got a 99 GSX in 2002. Car was awesome. But sadly I totaled it on the highway after just 7 months of ownership.
Thatdudeinblue doesn't the '95 to '99 Eclipse's have 210 Horsepower
The T25 turbo cars are 210, so yes 95-99.
210 and crankwalk
210 crank, 180-190 to the wheels

at first glance it looked like a Subaru svx.
It's amazing you found one functional at all. Great review David! I loved these cars back in the day.
can you review a 2001 gt eclipse
The DSM Laser was actually the second generation of the Laser, even thought it was the same as a first gen Eclipse and Talon. The first gen laser was basically the same thing as a turbo Daytona.
Good video david! Nice car.
glad to see the car reviews back and stronk
I remember when I first seen this model Eclipse run 10 seconds in the quarter. it leaped off the ground, all 4 wheels and took off! it was amazing...
Man so much memories watching this video. I used to own a red eagle talon. Really fun little cars
My Dad had a '91 GSX Turbo, but it's just as cool as seeing the normal GSX on your channel! :D (let alone showing up like, anywhere on youtube)
Finally back with car reviews
Still have my first car, a 95 Eagle Talon TSi that I now race, DSM's are such fun cars and really teach you how to work on a car. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
I finally bought one again 😊 1990 gsx, red with Evo 8 wheels just like in this video.
Danggg 94k is great! My 95 GST has 96k! I love that you finally done a "DSM" review! Keep it up bro!
YES! It's about time you reviewed one of these! DSM FTW
My dad had that exact same car. same color snd everything and he said it was the most fun car to drive he has ever owned.
I got my baby 2G eclipse GSX pushing 350 and it's been reliable for 5 years so I'm happy lol
Have an 1992 GSX, bone stock, 129k miles. This car is something else. If you take care of him, he will treat you well.
We are shooting for 450 at the wheels.
definition of thatdudeinblue: can have fun in a 1,000+ hp supra, and a 190hp evo.
Hell ya 4G63T much respect my dude I can see your gearhead you have respect for all cars built right.
I liked the little history on the gens, their purpose and life expectancy increased my respect for it and it's owners.
The Bc coils I have on there are the Br series, Spring rates are 12 and 10. I've about maxed out the lowering on the strut
Good to know! I appreciate the info. Enjoy that car, and don't sell it, whatever you do!
I just bought a laser rs in red. It's all stock. No rust at all. The paint isn't the best but 30 years old. I'm doing the headliner at the moment.
I'm personally super stoked for you finally being able to find a good [running] DSM. I've been waiting for you to review an Eclipse/Lazer/Talon since I subscribed roughly two years ago. That's coming from a dude who massively prefers Subie.
Anyhow, sweet review dude. Good to see you're doing better now.
Glad to finally see a review on a DSM thanks. I would like to see one in a srt4.
Dude I was obsessed with the first gen Eclipse. I wanted one so bad, but like you I couldn't find one that was running.
DSMs are absolutely reliable when done right. Considering how old these are now and how many owners a lot of them have had, it's hard to find a proper one. But believe me they are fun, and it's too easy to make HP with them.
I'm loving seeing reviews again! so glad you could finally get cars that work lol
