    Ego in the comics is known for lying about his origins. I like to believe the movie Ego lied about being a celestial.

      Celestials in the comics and in the First Guardians of the galaxy are giant robot looking ancient beings. In the comics ego has had different origins over time, and the writers decided to say he lied about previous origins. Long story short, he's not a celestial. Here's a wikipedia page detailing his origin history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ego_the_Living_Planet#Fictional_character_biography

    It's great to see someone who does appreciate the nuance and depth that was given to Ego as a character, rather than just dismissing him as "yet another psychopath" at the end... which he IS, but he's also one with a really fleshed-out philosophy and history within the MCU cosmic side of things. I think it's important to appreciate that Ego truly is a monster, but it's not because he's incapable of more - if anything, he's more evil because he has the potential to be a decent person, but he rejects it because of his "egoism"; if he wasn't so self-absorbed he would have cherished his time with Meredith and reconsidered what was important to him (the Expansion, or the family legacy he might have had). This is why it REALLY grinds my gears when people dismiss the middle part of the film as pointless filler or overlong, purely because they seem to not see that it's ABOUT giving some depth and nuance to Ego and Peter's relationship; it's not just about giving Ego layers before he shows his other side, it's also about contrasting him with his son... See, while Peter is understandable fascinated by his Celestial genes and what they make him, more than just a normal man, ultimately he DOES value other people where his father does not; however tempted he was by the promise of immortality, he cherishes those he cares for (even when he's fighting with Gamora over the meaning of his family) and when Ego reveals he's the reason Meredith died, Peter immediately rejects what his biological father stands for and along with the Guardians, he defeats and kills Ego to save the entire universe. There's just... so much there which doesn't get enough appreciation, I feel; Ego is easily in the Top 10 MCU film villains for me, possibly even Top 5 if I can hash it out (albeit, when counting the Tv shows...)
    Anyhow, if it's alright with you I'd like to link this analysis on Tv Tropes (and maybe elsewhere) - I like this sort of thought being put into something, and how put-together it all is. As many people as possible should see your videos, because you really try hard to not leave anything out...

    • @NandovMovies
      @NandovMovies  6 лет назад +40

      Borjan Kosarac Absolutely, link it around! I think whats great about Ego is that he doesn't seem to be lying about loving Meredith Quill. A lesser movie's Ego would just be pretending to love Meredith to trick Peter and the team into going along with his plan, but that's not Ego's game. He's just the completely relatable crappy guy that you meet everyday who tricks himself into believing he cares about people so that he doesn't feel bad about doing whatever he wants.

    • @borjankosarac3645
      @borjankosarac3645 6 лет назад +27

      ... And who just happens to have the power to end all life in the universe. Yep, all that normal stuff, right ;-D
      BTW, thanks so much - I'll get right onto it! :-)
      I completely agree with you, and I think that adds an additional dimension to the character than if he were simply lying; note the many comments he makes at various points in the film. Like, he says that he hired Yondu to bring Peter to him, but "for some reason he decided to keep you"; even if he realised that Yondu felt terrible upon learning what Ego was doing to his progeny (which is debatable), it seems he truly doesn't understand HOW this would drive Yondu to try and protect and raise Peter as a form of penance - especially considering his trafficking of kids led to the other Ravager clans banishing him (so he was searching for family), and Yondu is a pretty crummy person who probably knew he'd never be a good father... but tried his best anyway, because the alternative was unthinkable to him. Or how Ego couldn't set foot on Earth with Meredith dead on it - even with her gone, it would probably remind him of her and he feared THAT anchoring him and thus, his abandoning the Expansion.
      Then there's his appreciation of Earth culture through its music, and how he fondly remembers that Meredith could memorise every song on the radio - that sort of attention to detail MIGHT be attributable to a calculating mind, but I think it's also telling how of all the facts he has learned through his long life he recalls this so clearly. He even attributes the story in "Brandy" to himself, which both shows his depth of personality AND his narcissism - he's the sailor in the song, the one who values the sea more than the "fine wife [Brandy] would be", but he misses that Brandy is the actual hero of the tale being told; it's about the little person who does NOT see the forest for the trees as Ego does, but values the smaller things for what they are. It's a geniously-subtle condemnation of that sort of thinking that lacks the kind of perspective and makes people into those kinds of monsters - Ego shuns companionship (besides Mantis who helps him sleep, and Peter who can help his plan) because he doesn't try to understand their value from another light; Peter, who inherited his mother's compassion and love along with his father's (both of them) abrasive hubris, does love his friends even as he struggles to relate to or understand them half the time.
      A hero is as they say, only as good as their villain, and a villain like Ego truly elevates the strength of character a hero like Star Lord will demonstrate. Not just him of course, there's also his contrast to Yondu (and note how they never exchange dialogue yet we get everything we need to know about their relationship already), to Thanos (as an abusive father-figure to Mantis, essentially his foster daughter like Gamora and Nebula are to the Mad Titan - yes, big purple has a presence there!), and arguably even to the Guardians as a whole (who co-parent Baby Groot). I could single out each character there further to find a contrast (especially Drax who lost his family unwillingly, yet still can find love for his new family unit the Guardians), but I think you get the point. ^.^'

    Another aspect that they added to movie Ego was the fact that he’s a Celestial. Now, whether he’s connected to the MCU Celestials for real is unknown, but he does have some aspect similar to the Celestials in the comics.

    • @andywilson5234
      @andywilson5234 6 лет назад +6

      I'm glad you mentioned this because the reference to Ego being a Celestial kind of bothered me. The MCU version of the Celestials was already introduced in the first Guardians movie. Having Ego refer to himself as a "Celestial" in this move is just confusing to us fans, because he is so different to the MCU version, which was more faithfully portrayed in the previous film. Why did they do that? Couldn't they have made a different choice in describing Ego? I'm OK with reinventing characters or races (like they did with Star-Lord's dad), but it felt like the reference to the Celestials between Guardians 1 and 2 was a bit of bait and switch.

    • @alexhuerta2140
      @alexhuerta2140 6 лет назад +7

      Andy Wilson I thought about that too, and later came across a comment someone posted saying that Ego wasn't really a celestial like he said, and that he was only claiming to be one because he thought highly of himself. They said it made sense for him to have the name "Ego" to go along with his big ego that he had, thinking that he was the best thing in the universe. Later in the film he also tells Peter "We are gods!" Which also wasn't true so that kind of adds on to that theory. But yeah I do agree with you it just made it confusing when the film makers decided to have him say he was a Celestial

    • @andywilson5234
      @andywilson5234 6 лет назад +2

      Alex Huerta I like this explanation. I guess I'd be more satisfied with it if the writers made this just a little more explicit. Like having Groot say something on the side in his grootspeak with Rocket responding, "I agree. He doesn't look like a Celestial." I don't know. I have to see the movie again, but I was just thrown off balance by that comment and I generally don't like it when the writers need the audience to fill in the plot holes for themselves. Perhaps a future Guardians movie with the *real* Celestials in it will provide some resolution.

    His character was mostly based on the master of the sun, Star-Lord's original father before it was retconned into being J'son. He is a guy with a long beard who literally represents God (and Star-Lord represented Jesus in his first appearance, hence the name) who turns out to be a bad guy afterwards. In the film, Ego is an inmortal being who can manipulate matter, is super powerful and is an ancient almost omnipotent force who created himself. Kurt Russell himself has said he loves the character BECAUSE he is basicly god. They even gave Ego the looks of the Master of the Sun. In the comics, the master of the Sun gives Star-Lord super powers of matter manipulation, and so does Ego in this film. I can't believe you didn't mention this character.

    People didn't mind Ego in the MCU because J'Son was such a non entity in Peter Quill's life (has a matter in fact him and Spartax is a retcon itself) during Dan Abnett's run and then Bendis made him into an unlikeable jerk that everyone hated. Ego isn't exactly a character that was really nuanced in the comics either so a lot of Cosmic fans weren't upset or bothered.
    Hela is a different character than Death (who is suppose to be neutral and all about balancing the universe which Thanos mentions in the trailer and it's also something Hela didn't care about) and she has with different motivations. Hela also wouldn't work as Thanos' motivation for what he's doing.
    That said Hela most likely won't be in Avengers 4 since Cate was busy filming another movie while that movie was being filmed and was in another part of the world.

      Dotm Shockwave I get where you're coming from, but to be honest concepts like the one above all from marvel and the presence from DC are just ways for them to jump around the idea of God, God, Allah or what may you without being direct about it. And why is Stan Lee not the one above all, well the OAA does not need to appear in human form to observe the world, but when he does, it usually a matter of great importance wherein he has to talk to someone eh. Peter Parker in the comics, he never just materializes into a person and observes aimlessely. He is not an assistant to the watchers either because they don't need one, at when it comes to their WATCHING duties. Why is he THE STRANGER? because it is in the strangers conception to be a mysterious and enigmatic figure with no clear motives for his actions, he can just appear wherever whenever and do whatever without having to explain himself, it is in his nature, he is not there to WATCH OR OBSERVE OR FIX anything he just does whatever he pleases. Not to mention the stranger in the comics kinda does look like Stan Lee ie. The white mustache and hair (minus the glasses of course). Stan Lee being the stranger is a fool proof explanation that doesn't require justification by marvel because he is just some strange old man who love popping up during interesting times in superhero lives(as he always does in the comics).

    • @kreekevol3739
      @kreekevol3739 6 лет назад +4

      Thats just the problem isn't it? Stan Lee is not "experiencing the lives" of these heroes in these cameo, he's just there minding his own business, if he has no intention of directly interacting with them why bother making an avatar? besides its all just fun cameos without any mean (as of right now), but me saying he is THE STRANGER is just from a logical standpoint as it seems the most plausible (the least amount of faults or contradictions) but hey, if you wanna go with the fanboy theory then he is the OAA, god knows theres is no convincing a comicbook fan on an opinion contrary to their own. lol no honestly tho, i just think saying he is the OAA is just an easy out and kinda lazy theory if you think about it.

It would of been like killing Magneto in the first X-men movie it would make no sense many of them are far too important to throw away like that but they do it anyways.

    combining the best parts of the thousands of obscure comic characters sounds like a great idea to me. Beats seeing the same big gray final boss villain at the end of every movie.

    I feel like there was also a bit of the Beyonder in there. Especially in his origin. A godlike consciousness, floating in space pondering what it's purpose is. It starts to create things, form matter and eventually creates its own world that is all apart of itself.

    I read one the comments in here stating that Ego IS a Celestial whose essence is not inside a suit but rather formed to become a planet, perhaps by gathering space-stuff to cover its vulnerable self. I like this idea because it gives the Celestials weakness that can be exploited, making them powerful but not OP.

    I'm agreeing - and this is a common thing. E.g., today, how Sylvie is both Lady Loki and also Enchantress. The best attributes of each combined.
    I think they're doing it to give the character some depth in powers and personal story, because otherwise you might end up with the situation in Iron Man 2 of a handful of easily dispatched lesser villains. Or a character that as a one-note works on the page (Superman's Doomsday) ends up being a flat and pointless side thing in a larger story, and comes across as a waste.

    Interesting run down.
    I do like how the movies draw on many sources to remix the stories and characters, kinda like the comics have always been doing.
    Even in Sam Raimi's Spider-man, Mary Jane was an amalgam of many of Peter's girl-friends.
    The look, name and acting -aspiration of Mary Jane.
    The girl next door childhood crush who gets kidnapped and thrown off a bridge like Gwen.
    And she was the popular girl at school who slowly grew to love him like Liz.

    I'd like to think that StarLord still has some powers that will take a while to rediscover since Ego is gone, but it's in his DNA. He has his own light within, not as great, doesn't make him immortal, but gives him a little extra every now and then. maybe it's quite taxing on him to use so he can't use it all the time and things are still hard and interesting to watch, but it'd be cool if it's still there to come extent instead of just a one movie thing.

  • @manamongmen3381

    I like the gardener thing. Makes me wonder if they'll reveal the elders to be celestials. The collector might be on nowhere because it's his a rival of his, and it's kid of a trophy, and the grandmaster has some weird connection to sakar, so it could hold up. I just hope they do more with these guys soon.

    • @augustvonmackensen7273

      The only reason they didn't do the real Mandarin character is they didn't want to anger the Asian market. I think Marvel may have even be warned by the Chinese government if I remember correctly.
      I don't think we will ever see him and if we do it will just be another white guy like Trevor, or maybe a middle easterner like the 10 rings were portrayed as in the first Iron Man movie.
