I am delighted you make big trees, I have quite a few large trees in pots which I trimmed as bonsai for years before I started learning bonsai inspired by Japanese gardens. This tree is beautiful, a stunner!
Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, this is a very educational video, it showed you thinking ahead as you made your cuts. That was very informative to see you designing the tree as you wired and even made space for a pad that had not sprouted. No slight of hand just knowledge. I like the Dawn Redwood and have acquired a small one, not to be small long. I am slowly viewing your entire video library, slowly, there so many. 🙏 🖖 🙏 😔 🙏 🙏 🙏
Very beautiful tree. Once again you have created a piece of art. Will be worth a lot of $$. I wish I could purchase the tree, the Dawn Redwood is my favorite. Thank you Peter.
Mr. Chan, I love the large bonsai also. I am so glad that you did this video as I have a beautiful dawn redwood that is only 2 yrs old but about 5 ft. tall and was uncertain on how to start training it. I love the look of them and also the trident maples.
A philosophical question: the general idea is to mimic nature in miniature. Branches of the redwood naturally reach up; why train them to resemble trees with branches reaching out vs up?
Your redwood tree is beautiful. I live in Oklahoma but originally am a Cajun from Southwest Louisiana and it does remind me of the cypress trees we have.
We do have a lot of Bald Cypress trees in the Southeastern US. Thankfully they are often planted along streets and on school campuses. I'd much rather see them than some non-native garbage like a Bradford Pear or yet another Crape Myrtle. I wish I had a nickel for every topped Crape Myrtle in my county. Thanks again for the awesome videos of your nursery!
Large bonsai isn't a contradiction, it is just like a large miniature. Many trees being replicated are over 20m tall. 1:10 or 1:20 are perfectly acceptable scales. I particularly like them as centrepieces in small gardens
Have you ever worked with a montezuma cypress?! These are my favorite trees but I do t see them in San Antonio Texas, their native habitat is south Texas and Mexico.
I myself, like you. Prefer a large bonsai and turning garden trees into bonsai. I suppose it stems from my long family lineage of loggers of Northern California once we moved off the Indian reservation.
I have about 5 of these that are 4 years old I had to pull after they went dormant. The deer rut on them with their antlers and smashed them down, ill need to replace them with this year's stock. If you're interested in them look up Rochester Redwoods on facebook. Very nice trunk size 5-8" in circumference. I like watching bonsai, I have no artistic talent.
I simply love that tree! Can you give an approximate price range for a Dawn Redwood bonsai of that quality? It could be the perfect gift for my partner's upcoming significant birthday.
Can you take the cuttings of the large root pieces and grow them out? I just brought in a triple trunk Benj. Ficus terra cotta pot, it's grown about 10 feet high, all 3 trunks are about 2 inches across, and I could not get it out of the ground! A root had grown through the hole and was anchoring it. :) Had to cut it off - about an inch thick. I found these lovely roots spreading 2 feet every direction! I'm giving them a chance to grow in a separate containers. Ultimately, I will air layer this and hope the final product is a 20-inch bonsai.
you also have to remember that Herons is a commercial nursery. The typ of earth Mr. Chan is using works just fine as he said time and time again and is relativly cheap. Akadama, Kyriu etc. is way more expensive, so potting one of these bigger trees would cost quite a bit. Good for a Bonsai enthusiast, but maybe "breaking the bank" for a nursery.
I have a question Mr. Chan. How can you leave wire on a Dawn Redwood branch for upto a year? I leave wire on for 3 months and the wire has already bitten into the branch so much it becomes detrimental to the branch.
It is funny to think about the trend toward smaller bonsai, bcuz in America bonsai is this very niche hobby and serves no "function" when really evolved out of ancient landscaping techniques. I guess westerners developed shrubs and hedges to serve the same function instead
" I am what I am... a maverick" - an absolute legend - 2020
Um, whaaaa?
Your “Dawn” is beautiful - majestic! Great job! Thanks.
Just so beautiful! Thank you Peter for sharing your talent!

Wouaaaa Superbe good job look
Great video. I love Dawn redwoods! Can redwoods grow new lower branches? If all the bottom ones are to thick could you cut them back to the trunk?
Appreciate the correction, folks
I bet you can make some nice trees from the cuttings. Fine Redwood.
Bravo pour le travail sur ce metasequoia
That looks stunning. Just ordered a redwood from a generic plant nursery.
Make sure it's not a generic Red Wood!
Have you ever worked with a montezuma cypress?! These are my favorite trees but I do t see them in San Antonio Texas, their native habitat is south Texas and Mexico.
Convovulos weeds in my garden are my arch nemesis!
Thank You !!!
Thank you!
how old / how long did it grow in the pot before removing. Thank you

Beautiful. Just needs a speeder bike or two.....
Very nice tree, i wuld love to grow somthing in the same shape and style but that trunk is going to be hard to get well done sir
This is what you call bonsai. What is the reatail on one of those?
Peter you have the vigor of a young man.
...or the vitality of a young tree!

Maybe an adjustable table would be good to be able to reach better as you work, since the tree is so big :)
Short blade chainsaw for those dense rootballs ?
Well I wish you make a timelapse for a bonsai tree
How old is that tree ?
I simply love that tree! Can you give an approximate price range for a Dawn Redwood bonsai of that quality? It could be the perfect gift for my partner's upcoming significant birthday.

Can you propagate that branch cutting?
Thanks!

I have never tried taking root cutting off Dawn Redwood but they strike from semi hardwood cuttings taken in mid summer.
There are also many large bonsai in the Philippines. :)
from a tree on the ground to a bonsai. they say for a sequoia to not remove any of the roots. it will die. i did and it does .
Beautiful tree! May I ask, how much would you ask for that tree?
Contact our office if you want to buy
@@peterchan3100 Thank you Sir!
Amazing video
Is there any reason why you are using this soil?
May be because of the species? Why not akadama, kyriu, etc?

@@maddawgnoll I am here in SC hardiness zone 7a close to 7b. We don't really have long harsh winters. Currently my DR have all green foliage.
What kind of pot was that?
A bonsai pot!
Was this tree collected or has it always been in a pot?...well you answered in the video.
It was grown on our nursery from a small plant
