Veronica Jones; what I like about Peter is that he simplifies the techniques when applying the bonsai guidelines. I your trees acquire a very naturalistic aspect which gives a special character to the Bonsai and they are not forced
      and imposible forms branch.

Hi Peter, thanks for focusing on the dawn redwood. I bought a quite large one ( 1.60 m) for cheap 2 years ago in a ordinary nursery. This year I airlayered the upper 50 cm successfully after your advice, Now I am with two big trees ready for styling. Both straight upright. Still far away of the trees you are showing but let’s where we land at the end.

Hey, quick question, can you air Layer the main stem of the tree? My Meta is about 60 cm and grows very sparely around the base, so i wanted to know if it is possible to air layer the tip (about 20 cm), so the stem of the old one get‘s the chance to regrow.
Alternative : how can i get it to grow new branches below top of the tree. I kind of like it‘s height. But with only the top growing, literally no growth on the trunk and some leaves right at the base. It really looks like a palm tree, which i dislike.
I know dawns are very happy to grow, but it doesn‘t seem to produce new sprout on the trunk.
To put it into simple terms: how can i get my Meta to produce new branches?

    • @BostonBonsaiIdiot
      @BostonBonsaiIdiot 2 года назад +1

@@arnes.7945 In my limited experience, cuttings worked well up to pencil size, and sir layers worked well around 1"Ø. The inverse didn't work. So I'd say that if your main trunk line is around 1" at any point, you should be good to go. Look at future branch structure before you do it too.
As for the bare trunk, I know these guys backbud pretty readily. Check out "Darth Masiah's" channel, he chops the living heck out of his and it wont die. My bet is if you chopped it way back (or just picked a low point to air layer it) it would find a way to rebound, but you'd obviously be growing the rest of the tree from scratch. Hope that helps!

I went back three times just to look at it before I bought it and actually clear an area in my backyard so that I would have room for her. I plan to plant a good sized stand of them at my farm this spring from cuttings off of the tree. Just gorgeous.

I live in Dearborn Michigan, a suburb of Detroit and in the 1940s , a municipal employee traveled to California and brought back a bunch of dawn redwood sapplings and proceeded to plant them all over a specific neighborhood that Henry Ford built for his employees. There are now around 20 or so redwoods, some standing 130 or so feet tall in front, back and side yards. A funny thing is because of thier popularity, the city now offers young dawn redwoods as a replacement for any tree cut down or just as an added feature to your yard.

You're only mad when you stop answering yourself Peter.
It's such a pleasure to watch you work and I love all the help it gives me too work on my own trees or something else in the garden.
Hopefully I'll get over for a workshop in the near future

The nodules on the Redwood are called 'burrs'. They can be planted and nurtured into new trees. Fantastic specimens. I am so very appreciative and jellous of everyone in the UK able to visit this great nursery!

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, Peter. Even when the camera work is limited because you have to video yourself, they are still tremendously enjoyable and informative. You are a great teacher, articulate and naturally funny. One of your most notable traits, however, is the ability to talk intelligently while doing stuff with your hands. There are so many people (perhaps most people) who cannot do two different things at the same time and maintain a conversation. So it's much appreciated that you are not only able to describe what you are doing while doing it, but also even throw in background information and valuable facts and bits of knowledge.

I had a wonderful dawn redwood in our rocky garden of 3 acres in the Hudson Highlands north of NYC--its red bark was a delight all year round as well as its feathery needles and it grew very fast; there are some marvelous mature dawn redwoods on the grounds of Vassar College further north. Now, living in the city full time I have been inspired by you to make a miniature bonsai garden near two tall windows. I wish I were in England again; lived in and around Oxford for 7 years. Spring came early there.

Unless you can winter those trees properly around 10 C° I wouldn't keep them inside.

Good old Mr Chan....this gave me ideas for the several Dawn Redwoods in my garden...which are still small enough to keep interesting.

Glad you recaptured your enjoyment of the hobby, not the business which I am sure is tuff like any business, in our hobby dumping hundreds doesn't matter since we have our "Job". Always great videos, I drove an hour to a landscape supply company near Mt Baker volcano, got black volcanic rock for $2 a 5 gal bucket, I did a lot of shoveling and then sifting when I got home, hope this will drain better for my hundreds of JBP and JRP seedlings, it's been very rainy here in Washington and it was killing them.

My Mother brought a Redwood from California to N.W. Oregon and planted it over 70 years ago...It grows in an area that needs to keep it trimmed back and kept to 15 ft. because it is growing under wires to house.
This tree has been cut in half and stripped down like a telephone pole before....and it easily comes right back...Now its base is easily 5 ft through with the tree 15 ft tall and rounded top like a bonsia shape. For an evergreen tree, this one can survive cutting that would easily kill most evergreens, as long as the climate is to its liking.

I enjoy all things plant related and dreamed about trying to creat a bonsai. Your wonderful videos have given me the boost to do so. As a newbie I would find it very helpful if you would give pot dimensions.
