They always delivered an amazing show in their heyday. You'd stand there waiting for them in anticipation, and then suddenly they'd give you a big fright by suddenly bursting on stage with Doc Neeson jumping around and the band playing with power. Rick Brewster would stand so perfectly still that you couldn't tell the difference between the real Rick or a cardboard cutout of him. It was only when Doc snapped Rick in half with a kick that you'd know what was standing on stage. It was a good stage trick and we all loved it. A quality band!

That “Can you please tell me what the time is?” was a fiendishly clever idea by Doc Neeson, as it typically meant DJs would love to back-announce the song to say stuff like “Well, I t’s just gone 5:24 and you were listening to No Secrets, the latest single by The Angels…” and ensuring that there was a reasonable chance anyone wondering what the song was they’d just heard would find out.

I am pretty sure a lot of our bands lack of success in the US was the insecurities of quite a few well-known Headlining bands didn't like appearing after the Aussies. It's no secret quite a few either got into fights and life made super hard for them or just had their contracts torn up. At least there is you tube so people get the chance to hear what we have known for decades.

I first came to Australia from Malibu, California in 1977. I mostly hung out with fellow surfers, that looked and lived like I did in the States, but had a different accent. That's when I first heard of The Angels, and I thought nothing of them. When I returned in 1979, The Angels had increased in popularity with much better songs and a tighter sound. They did pretty well in the US and apparently had an influence on Guns 'n' Roses. Coming Down, Take A Long Line and Marseille are 3 of my favorites. Hightly recommended.

You left an Angels gig bouncing off the walls. I recommend catching live performances. La Trobe University is a great show. Liveline was a fantastic live album. Rick and John Brewster played lead and rhythm guitar repectively. Their father played with the Australian Symphony Orchestra, and John is a Classicaly trained pianist. The story goes that their father hated showy musicians, and always told his boys to "let the music speak". Rick took that seriously, and incorporated it into his stage persona. He never moved on stage, always focussing on his lead guitar work.

I used to see The Angels whenever I could. Always gave a great show, and were second to none. I believe the world only got half the Oz rock picture with AC/DC. The other half is most definitely The Angels. Angus Young is a hyperactive guitar player, and Rick Brewster is as stiff as a board guitarist. One band keeps things relatively simple while the other has some lyrical intellect.
There are some essential tracks by The Angels that you need to check out and I am pleased to see many people are throwing in suggestions.
Personally, I think ''Am I Ever Going To See Your Face Again'' (original video and live footage) should be left much later.

The Angels were the IT band when I first moved to Australia from England back in the 70's. Even some of the Punks like them because they had a snappiness to the song writing that was closer to Punk than Deep Purple or Rainbow. I am enjoying the day to day flow of Aussie names that you have not yet explored. I was beginning to think this was an INXS/Divinyls adventure channel. The Radiators, The Angels, and now a suggestion for very early Mondo Rock. Primal Park is a fine album, and a class title track. Got on to them soon.

This song is about a true incident that Doc Neeson had experienced. From what I remember, he shared a cab with an actress that still lived with her family. The woman opened up to Doc and told him her life story during the cab ride. I googled Amanda the Australian (assuming she's an Aussie) actress and Amanda Muggleton, who is now 72, pops up in the search results. She played Chrissie Latham in the Australian soap show ''Prisoner (Cell Block H)''. I actually remember Chrissie in Prisoner (the tv show). She was a lovely character if you look past her murderous and violent tendencies. Be pretty cool if that's the actress Doc wrote this song about.

The Angels were such an important band in Australia in the 70's and 80's. They were Countdown regulars, and even though we kids at Countdown only saw the band mime to their latest single, it was always thrilling to see Doc Neeson jump around, while the rest of the boys (except the drummer) stood perfectly still. I would have put The Angels as ''dude music'' at the time, but that didn't mean I didn't own their albums (Face To Face, Next Exit and Dark Room). I would always listen to them, in spite of being a pop fan. This song teleports me back to 1980.
Anyway, the first time I got drunk was at an Angels concert in 1986. Robbo and OnceWasRStrathfield made a great suggestion with this one. Many would cry that ''Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again'' should be a starting point, but I think ''No Secrets'' works best for the uninitiative.

This always reminds me of my life in Sydney during the late 70's/early 80's. I was a student at The University Of Sydney and would either spend my nights working as a cleaner or studying at the University library. In my opinion, Sydney was best seen at night because it was quite an unremarkable city during the day. We might have the reputation for the beaches and the harbour, but the rest of the city was made up of bland corporate buildings decorated with bland advertising billboards. The way The Angels look in this video reminds me of the men that would walk the streets at odd hours in the morning. If you looked for it, you would most likely find some strange soul that looked a little like Doc. Even Mel Gibson looked a litte like Doc. This song was a very big hit in Australia in 1980, and it was inescapable. Turn on your radio and there it was. Start up your car at 3am after studying and it would still be playing. This and Flowers' ''Can't Help Myself'' will always take me back to those dark nights of 1980.

The big difference. Angus Young bounced across the stage. Rick Brewster stood perfectly still.

Personally, i think these guys were better than AC/DC. They had many great songs, I'm sure people will suggest Am I Ever Gonna See You Face Again, but I'd like to recommend Take A Long Line. The guitar solos are iconic, and Doc Neeson (RIP) was a great singer/entertainer!

I don't mind the occassional track from No Exit or Face To Face. The Angels got a little too bloated for me in the 80's with Dogs Are Talking and Fashion And Fame. But in the 70's, songs like Take A Long Line provided a pretty edgy soundtrack for our fledgling society. Great night time music. I recommend Long Line!

And Chris, I think BB King's guitar was actually an ES355 (not 335), as it had that 'VariTone' rotary switch. Very similar guitar otherwise, though. I guess certain guitarists prefer semi-acoustic guitars also because of the way they *feel* , so they rather stuff their cavities to avoid feedback instead of switching to solid-body guitars 🙂 Gibson's mass-produced B.B. King 'Lucille' version doesn't actually have any f-holes anymore, I noticed!

    Cynthia and Chris,
I have a request for a short song called ''The Way I've Been'' by Australian Crawl. The song is a pleasant and fairly short, rather innocuous track and is not deserving of its own reaction video. If you do get back to Australian Crawl, could you do ''Boys Light Up'' and ''The Way I've Been'' in one reaction video?
Dogs In Space has brought a particular video of ''Boys Light Up'' to my attention.
*Australian Crawl - Boys Light Up (video + audio merge 2023)* on the RemasteredVersion channel.
I think all other videos of Boys Light Up, including that dodgy 1983 live music video, are eyesores. The RemasteredVersion comes up looking the best.
Just a little warning about Boys Light Up. The song was initially banned from radio play in Australia due to lyrical content. There's some rather unsavory lyrics in the second verse.
I also agree with Robbo on the Mondo Rock song ''Primal Park''. Robbo has told me to be specific, so I will ask that you view the nzoz1979 upload of the song.
Mondo Rock - Primal Park nzoz1979
I owned the Primal Park album, and enjoyed it during the time of release. A lot of great rock-pop tracks with Searching For My Baby being one of my favourites.
Anyway, those three songs are my latest requests. We've seen success with ''No Secrets'' and ''Coming Home'', and I'm sure we'll also see success with those Oz Crawl and Mondo Rock songs.
