I was laughing my ass off at the guy repeating "I'm a gorilla"
I should've never read this comment lmao
hahaha me too!
Oh my god this got me so stressed
Lmao this is what my group be sounding like when we sitting in the cafeteria for breakfast, i just stay quiet like "??????"
Literally what I thought
I find it hard to believe that only 30% of people heard the "I'm a gorilla". It immediately stood out as it was the most easily understood thing in the entire video. I think there might be something wrong with the audio mixing on the RUclips upload.
I didn't hear it even though I was expecting something unusual from this experiment. I think that also the man getting a drink distracted me.
i honestly didn't hear it HAHA
This doesn't work as well in audio form. There is a video of this example where you have to count the number of basketball passes on a specific color team, and while it's going on a man in a gorilla suit walks through the video and does a dance then leaves the frame.
The first time I saw that I didn't even notice the gorilla and a lot of people don't actually. Actually, every person I have shown the video to didn't see it either. However, now that you know you can't try it yourself. But you would have known anyways if I just sent a link to it.
Nope, I didn't hear it at all.
I heard the "I'm a gorilla" right away, it stood out so much from the other things they were speaking that it just popped out. It took me about one or two times before I did hear it. Also why do all these selective videos (hearing and attention) include something bout' gorillas?
I heard ✨️i dont have enagth bread and it isnt blue✨️
“Yeah we got wrapping paper”
This reminds me of coming out of anesthesia and start hearing everyone talk at once.
OMG you're so right.
I definitely heard the "I'm a gorilla" in the back of my mind but wasn't paying attention bc I was listening for the women.
I didn’t even noticed the man said I’m a gorilla cause to me most of that was muffled and I couldn’t understand what they were saying and I have to try so hard to listen my brain feels like it was being friend and my ears feel meh 😕 but when she pointed out the gorilla thing I could hear it .
I was trying too hard to focus on the ladies but that I kept getting distracted by the men.. I must say though, I heard 'I'm a gorilla' the whole first time though and got completely distracted by the gorilla man as he walked down the room xP
I cracked up at the im a gorilla. But honestly this is what my head constantly sounds like
This is hilarious had no problem focusing unless counting my laughter.
Im a gorilla was the only actual spoken thing that processed besides 'they seem sharp enough' bc even though i was trying to listen to the women all i could hear was the weird noises like tearing, scissors, wrapping paper, glasses, weird thunking noises bc that scene was so busy???
It's kind of funny, I noticed that there was a man walking straight through the middle of the room, but I didn't hear him saying "gorilla". I also heard when one of the ladies went to grab scissors, and that the men and women were on each side of the room. I found myself looking to the right to listen to them, even though my eyes were closed
I'm surprised not a lot of people noticed
✨️i dont have enaugt bread adn it ist blue✨️
Me who can ignore others to hear people spilling the tea :
the people who disliked this either couldn't hear the gorilla guy or that's all they heard.
I don't think it's that. I have excellent headphones and i didn't notice it at all. In fact i noticed during the playback of it that during that part i found it even easier to listen to just the women as what they were saying was slightly clearer to me.. weird.
Interesting. Now I can be more aware of my auditory sense.
All I heard was the women talking about wrapping paper, the color silver, and something was expensive. I also heard scissors at some point. That's it. No, I did not hear the gorilla man or understand what the men were saying despite trying to distinguish any words I could the entire time.
I just heard a jumble of sounds and it was hard for me to make out sounds and the only thing I got were colors. Very strange.
Same here. I only heard murmurs and women talking but i couldnt understand them except a few words and phrases.
nearly shouted in fright as the audio began rolling. sounded too real... i heard the gorilla man right away as well.
I didn't understood what the man was saying due to accent but I was like "why does he keep repeating the same word? Is this part of the test???" 😂
I hardly registered anything as i was trying to understand the women and only heard a few words from them as the men overwhelmed my hearing. I heard the women talking but it started to become unaudiable for me and then became nothing more than scattered words.
Umm. Confused. I was asked to listen to the women talking. Why is everyone referring to the phrase 'I'm a gorilla'??! Surely, if we listen to the women, that phrase doesn't come into it?! I'm assuming one of the men says this? But.... I was listening to the women, as instructed !
Yeah some people say "ooh I'm special I heard gorilla" - I also heard it as it immediately jumped out to me between the speech - but to be honest, I think we were concentrating so much on waiting for something to happen that we forgot to completely tune in to the women. It's not their fault but to be honest, I think that really not as many people as in the comments would have actually heard "I'm a gorilla" if they weren't expecting a surprise.
That's the whole point of selective hearing. You have to listen to one thing, but they also test to see if you could hear something else while also hearing the thing they told you to listen to. Sorry if that's hard to understand; I'm not to good at explaining things.
I was trying as hard as I possibly could to listen to the women but I still heard '"I'm a gorilla", and once I had, it was all I could focus on.
I listened to the ladies and didn’t hear one word the men said.
I only understood like 4 words throughout the entire scene, let alone the I'm a gorilla lmaoo
Samee
I was paying attention to those women but then I just laughed out loud as he passes saying he is a gorilla hahaha after that I couldn’t pay attention to the girls
I cant hear anything theyre extremelly british
Amazingly realistic, almost as if the lady were sitting on my lap. :)
what's y'all saying in the comments seems surprising for me . I'm a non speaker of the language so i was relly focusing on women's voices and trying to indrestand ; that i didn't hear the ( i'm a gorilla ) man.
I'm a gorilla was when I got distracted.....then I got distressed coz I couldn't focus on anything
I'm A gOrIlA
i literally didnt notice that???
I picked about 4 random single words and that was all. Yikes!

I was so confused. Honestly, all I heard was the wrapping paper, tape, and the women came in and said hey, then silver. It was way too much going on.
I have APD I don’t even know what anyone here is saying and I have a headache uhhhhh 😳😳
Everything sounded muffled to me and when ever I try to focus on what something is saying my brain feels like it’s being fried so maybe I have headache idk but it made my ears feel weird a little idk tho I don’t have APD well I don’t think I do but idk
strange thing, as this phrase was the only one I really noticed, as it was so cutting out of the scene..... Maybe 70% of people not recognizing it have the poor quality headphones?
Does not having headphones affect it? Cuz I didn't use headphones (don't have any, can't use earbuds) and I didn't hear this man at all.
Edit: Holy crap, I just realized this is 9 years later. I'm so sorry.
It just sounds like clutter to me. I can't get past the accents.
Unusual lol? I heard
I was trying so hard to tune out all the male registers, esp bc my right ear probs needs some cleaning and they were already quieter
Ruffle paper I heard as wrapping paper, something about car park n upstairs, someone's coming at 4, which is weird bc the guys mentioned someone coming like 6 or 7
Silver wrapping paper decision, sharp scissors _snip snip_ , the guys are moving around glasses or other dining items, someone directing them where to put it
I'm not even sure the gorilla section was the same time when I was physically trying to shoo away the mens voices and glass clinking--that was _after_ gorilla, I think
Lol selective attention always makes me feel kinda bad
Or anything like--like Brain Games material e.g. the physical gorilla suit, the same shade of dark gray separated by light, small-big room, y'know
This effect effect is not predominantly related to attention. Humans process language more strongly on one side of the brain than the other. About 90% of people favor their left brain for language processing, but the left brain hears the sounds from the right ear, the side where the women were talking. People that process language with their right brain are more likely to hear the man say he's a gorilla because they can hear language on that side more easily.
This may be a bit of a late reply, but they actually checked for this in the study design by repeating it with the stereo fields switched and found the same results.
understood 30% because american
too much noise to concentrate in the woman's voice, the gorilla got my attention since it was repeating
Omg crazy!!
IM A GORILLA
Linguistics
Take the left headphone out to help
WOWWWWW haha
Hawthorne Effect. Pointless test. Enough said.
