    On the rear blade, you should angle the blade a few notches to pull the material to the center of the crown. By leaving the blade straight you were dropping materials into the Ditch. Been building roads and driveways for years and the rear blade is the best tool on roadways. You can always turn the blade around backwards and leave a smooth, debris free surface. Just my humble experience. Fun to watch video. Different ideas and tools are interesting. Thanks.

    That was an excellent comparison between three very useful, similar implements. I researched each of those to figure out what would be the most useful all around implement, since I can only afford one. I settled on the box blade because it can do everything the other two do, plus contain material.
    A land plane would a great addition. The scraper blade would be nice too. But for my money, a box blade is the best all around implement for those on a budget.

    You aren't getting a good crown with the land plane because you aren't exactly using it properly. The LEFT side of the plane always goes down the CENTER of the driveway, the blades are mounted at an angle in order for it to pull gravel up at the edge of the driveway and distribute it evenly from RIGHT to LEFT. Your second pass up the driveway was going the wrong way, you should have been driving back down towards the gate. All you succeeded in doing was flattening the crown you had built up from the first pass.

    From my experience a good box blade can do what the other 2 types do about 90% as well as they can. If you're only buying one, the box blade is most versatile.

      Unless you are in snow country. Then the rear blade is more versatile. I can grade my driveway in summer, and drag/plow it in winter, with one implement.
      The big advantage a box blade has is the rippers. You can dig those in and turn up gravel from deep in the driveway. It requires a lot of iterations to dig it up good, because the rippers are so far apart, but patience is your friend.
      The only one I don’t see a huge use for is the land plane, but maybe if we were more sandy soil like in the video it might have a use.

    • @jamesb2291
      @jamesb2291 2 месяца назад

      @1wheeldrive751 I still use the box blade and just push snow in reverse. If you're plowing a long driveway I can see the angled rear blade being useful. I have all 3 implements and only use the box blade regularly. The other 2 are much more specialized.

    • @1wheeldrive751
      @1wheeldrive751 2 месяца назад

      @@jamesb2291 - yeah, my driveway is both long and steep. And I also have a front mount snow blower on my kubota. But I do more than just my own driveway, and do two of the neighbors as well. I put a soft cab on it, which makes life so much better. Just the heat from the engine is enough to make all the difference. With the 54” blower on the front and angled blade on the back, I can make short work of these gravel driveways.

  • @rjriesland
    @rjriesland Год назад +4

    at the 10:50 mark when you are using the landplane if you would pull/drive in the opposite direction you would have been easily able to move material over and fill in that washout on the side of the driveway. Landplane will move a fair amount of material to fill in potholes and washouts you just have to go in the correct direction.
    Just my observation from using mine:)

Got a run of 200 x 600 that is a field I'd love to level out...but it's got a ton of rock in the soil. I really like the adjustable blade. Being able to offset like that is a great idea. If you would have added some angle to that all that material would have went o the middle of the road adding crown and not having the dam along side of the ditch. I like to use the "angle blade" to pull the sides then use the box blade to drag down the center to make a great road surface. BTW, the box blade packs the road bed like no other tool. The weight of the implement along with the weight of the material being pulled creates an incredibly packed layer that will hold up to weather and traffic. Also, I've been using my Branson 4720 since buying new in 2004. Sadly I lost it to a field fire yesterday. what a great tractor. It did more work than it was designed to do, more abuse, more neglect, more , more , more. What an incredible machine.

    Great video! I currently have a box blade for my JD 3025E and it works well for many projects around our homestead here in the deserts of South Eastern Arizona. But I am needing an attachment for removal of sand that accumulates after monsoons storms and road flooding. We end up with an extra 6-8 inches of sand on top of our dirt roads brought in by washes flooding the road. The box blade will move the sand but it's real slow going. I was thinking of a rear blade that will act almost like a snow plow to move the sand off to the side of the road. Any suggestions you might have would be much appreciated.

Even though it still has enough power and traction to pull it, it'll cause uneven grading... I think some of those skids or whatever they're called might help... Any idea what they're called? Hank for a more aggressive dig with a rear blade, modify you setup in a couple of ways.
    1) angle your blade with the cutting edge closer to the tractor rear tire, in addition to the slant down on that side.
    2) set the cutting (low edge) in line with the rear tire.
    Now on each additional pass if wanting a deeper ditch, drive with your rear tire in the ditch you cut on the previous pass and you will dig deeper as your tractor is at an angle so you increased your blade slant by having that side of the tractor lower.

    Nice video. I did see with the sand the box blade may have been a better choice. Here in Kentucky a land plane seems to do all seeing there is rocky clay like soil and I do have a very long gravel drive and a large gravel parking area around my barn as well. I do repair ruts in the drive that does not have gravel as well because of all the rock and clay the land plane just does the job better than a box blade would. The type of soil or the material you are levelling obviously have more to do with the choice than anything else.

    Your pretty darn slick with land plane Hank. Made your drive way look good. I have a box blade and rear scraper blade that I'll probably put on Marketplace as i pretty much just use the box blade. BTW i like the hydraulic top link on your three point hitch. Thats sweet. I hafta get me one as i already got 2 rear remotes on my tractor. Good video buddy.

    If you have a steep up and down driveway with gravel, which one would be better? I was wondering if the box blade would be better to carry/move loose gravel back up on the steep part of the driveway or does the land plane do just as good relocating stone up hill?

    • @HamiltonvilleFarm
      @HamiltonvilleFarm  2 года назад +1

      No. If you wanna carry spoils use a box blade. The landplane won’t carry the stone for you 👍

    Good stuff Hank. I appreciate you putting this video together.
    I'm about to acquire some land in north Florida (east of you) that used to be a tree farm. You may know that tree farm land has some tight undulating surfaces. I want to smooth it out. But, I'm not sure which piece of equipment is best to accomplish this. I was thinking the Land Leveler (plane). But, maybe a skid steer with a bucket might be better. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    • @HamiltonvilleFarm
      @HamiltonvilleFarm  3 года назад +1

      It really depends on what you’re trying to achieve and how much time and money you want to spend on it. A box blade will be good for starting off with if you do t have a skid steer

    • @tuberstitious

      Personally, I only had resources for one good tractor, backhoe, loader combo. I knew i would need a post hole digger so i packaged that too. I was blessed to find new shredder, finish mower, box blade, rear blade and other at auction. If my resources were greater i would prefer a skid steer and mini excavator. Maybe one day... but til then, i have been blessed to have all this to start with. What's (or who's ) in your wallet? Lol

      Oh yeah, they will do great. I've done it in several areas around the property with no issues. You just have to be careful around roots and stumps with all the torque my tractor has.
