I love this recording as well. However, if you pay close attention you will notice that she differs from Liszt's solo version in a number of places - Liszt's solo version cuts a small amount of music from the piano-orchestra original. Lisitsa restores those short sections eg. from 14:01 - she also adds octaves at certain place. This doesn't take anything away from her playing - it actually might add an extra layer of awesomeness. :) For Liszt's solo version if you have an affinity for clarity I would recommend Arnaldo Cohen's recording on Naxos. It is on youtube, as well as Spotify.
As someone who has, by playing a couple of Chopin etudes, tasted the incredible speeds, precision, and labor concert pianists put into their work - I still cannot comprehend what I just saw in this video. It seems supernatural. Valentina you are amazing - one of the great artists of our century.
Listening to this again 10 years later I noticed that this is actually pretty much Lisitsa's own transcription! :) She should give herself credit in the video description! This is markedly different in many places to Liszt's own piano solo version! Funnily enough Lisitsa here is actually more faithful to Liszt's piano-orchestra version than Liszt is in his piano solo version. Liszt omitted the fantastic section from 14:01 to 14:13 in his solo version. She also adds a couple octaves here and there, and the final right hand figuration from 14:13 is entirely her own - as far as I can tell. An incredible effort on Lisitsa's part - great ideas, wonderfully executed.
She actually borrowed from the structure of the two piano version. And also is liberal with doubling bass notes which is a common thing. Still this is the best version I've heard ever

I haven't heard other pianists do it in the solo version - my favourite recording of this is Arnaldo Cohen, on his Naxos complete Liszt disc No.1 - as far as I am concerned everything on that disc is played to perfection. Great balance of non-tonal late Liszt and Glanzzeit barnstormers.
Just repeated notes. You have to use staccato on same note but change fingers. It works on grands but not so much on uprights as repetition notes are to do with gravity of the actions and the hammer can be struck quicker due to depressing the key only halfway down before it can play the note again whereas uprights need the hammer jack to return

bro have you seen 황선용Seon-Yong Hwang, look at his youtube chanal and his performance of Amedee Mereaux's Etude Op. 63 no. 45? It might change your mind because he is the only non midi recording that I've heard play it well.

there was a myth that one of Liszt's performances was so powerful that by the time he was done, he was on his third piano. It's actually quite believable after lisztening to this piece.
In the past I have been critical of Miss Lisitsa's phrasing and musicality, despite flawless technique. Her Totentanz is like listening to Liszt himself. There are a few pieces that need no orchestration accompaniment and Miss Lisitsa has proven this. At 10:56 she turns the keys into horns...this is why Miss Lisitsa is not going anywhere soon; she is one of the elite that play with ten fingers...not two hands. This rendetion of Totentanz, is more than perfect. It's like you are telling your own story while you are playing it. From depressing parts with stressfull tones, till happy overtunes. Franz Liszt was at his time friends with both Alkan (Charles-Valentin Alkan) and Chopin, and you can clearly hear influence in his playing. And now you took it even futher to another level with your pefection and "feelings". Amazing.

I just can’t stop of listen this masterpiece. It’s not only about the perfect technique you use Valentina, it’s about the ability to make us feel this piece. And I have a problem with it, when I listen a piece of classic music played by you, I can’t listen other person playing the same piece, you make the pieces your own. This is something that I use to suffer also with opera. When I listen an opera sung by Maria Callas, I can’t hear other singer singing the same opera, she made all what she sung her own, she was as unique like an opera singer as you like a pianist. I find it interesting that some folks have a propensity to micro-analyze this phenomenal young woman, when it is more than evident that what she is capable of is far beyond the ability of most professional pianists. As for me, I remain privileged to have stumbled across this amazing person, quite capable of playing the piano at the very edge of the event horizon for human capability. I must say the piano itself sounds perfectly tuned, a very fluid full sound, great recording. Very Wow. You can see the thought behind the more menacing notes, how they come to life defined in her visual mental projection of the pattern's concept/schema.

Classical music is more commonly used to describe multiple musical era's, not strictly the classical era. This *is* classical music, in the romantic style. If you are using the more exclusive term than yes, this would not be classical.
This is the best interpretation, from the most talented pianist alive today of my favourite piano piece of all time (I regard it as the most powerful piano work ever composed). Great work Lisitza and Liszt!

In the world there are not many people who can perform these pieces with clarity and naturalness even studying 12-14 hours a day. Valentina you are great
I do not have words adequate to properly describe Valentina's performance. Perfection is inadequate. As to some previous comments on the camera shots of Valentina's face..... Usually i do not like to see facial expressions of the pianist. Too often they seem to either be in pain or the theatrics of ecstasy are annoying, to say the least. But the expression of relaxed, quiet joy on Valentina is beautiful. One can see she is singing the piece in her head. When she is hitting all those big octave jumps around 10:00, you can see her mouthing Pa, Pa, Pa. When she goes through certain sections, there is a little smile. She is enjoying herself immensely, and it adds to my enjoyment.
Certainly one of the greatest performances ever of this incredible piece, absolutely the best I have heard, this performance is beyond fantastic. I can only imagine the time and discipline that must have gone into the practicing of this piece and the development of this extremely talented pianist.
Don't try to undermine the effort of hers by stupid comments please. You aren't born with shit. You put in hard work, dedication - and if you love what you do, you'll strive to get even better. Amen. Listz was the first rock star and still remains an icon. He would have loved progressive rock; his style is timeless. When he turned 50 he became so moody and contemplative and poured the foundation for impressionism and the modernist movement with the pieces he wrote later in life. Thank goodness for artists as good as Valentina who channel the spirit of his younger (an older) years - it is a challenge few are up to.
Music is never just "sufficient in itself". Posture, fingering, stance, arm movement, and more all come together to change the tone and feel of a piece.
This is a remarkable performance. Liszt, of course, has penned variations on a theme based upon an old and ancient chant - Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) - interpreting the positive and negative judgements of the Lord based on His book. Ms. Lisitsa, through her remarkable pianistic skills, and remarkable interpretation of the music of the composer, has brought forth the positive judgements (with great feeling and understanding) as well as the wrathful judgements, also with great feeling, and with significant power as well. Her body language and facial expression throughout the performance reflects the emotion of the work as it progresses. Never have seen such a sensitive and well-understood performance. Kudos to Ms. Lisitsa, whose skills and sensitivities were up to the task of Totentanz..
What an amazing talent she is. I can listen to Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Mozart for a 1000 years and never tire of them. Absolutely timeless.

That has to be one of the greatest, if not the best Steinway Model D I have heard. The sound acoustics of the hall and the piano technician really allowed that piano to sing just right for her. Best interpretation of Totentanz!

I hate nothing more than "He/She's born with the talent" I heard that off of my playing and I always wondered if people thought there was musical Jesus that came like "Bruh here's some skill for your upcoming life, when you're born you're gonna be awesome"
Nope. Some people learn somethings better than others, some might be called that they're born with it. But in the end, all of them must needs to put the time and effort in, in order to exel in their craft. :)

Amen. Listz was the first rock star and still remains an icon. He would have loved progressive rock; his style is timeless. When he turned 50 he became so moody and contemplative and poured the foundation for impressionism and the modernist movement with the pieces he wrote later in life. Thank goodness for artists as good as Valentina who channel the spirit of his younger (an older) years - it is a challenge few are up to.
Music is never just "sufficient in itself". Posture, fingering, stance, arm movement, and more all come together to change the tone and feel of a piece.
Whenever my teacher assigns me a new piece, I always come to check how Valentina plays it first!

This is a remarkable performance. Liszt, of course, has penned variations on a theme based upon an old and ancient chant - Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) - interpreting the positive and negative judgements of the Lord based on His book. Ms. Lisitsa, through her remarkable pianistic skills, and remarkable interpretation of the music of the composer, has brought forth the positive judgements (with great feeling and understanding) as well as the wrathful judgements, also with great feeling, and with significant power as well. Her body language and facial expression throughout the performance reflects the emotion of the work as it progresses. Never have seen such a sensitive and well-understood performance. Kudos to Ms. Lisitsa, whose skills and sensitivities were up to the task of Totentanz..
I generally dont like fast paced classical pieces much, but I cant stop watching this one. Amazing performance. Thanks for sharing.
What an amazing talent she is. I can listen to Liszt, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, and Mozart for a 1000 years and never tire of them. Absolutely timeless.

That has to be one of the greatest, if not the best Steinway Model D I have heard. The sound acoustics of the hall and the piano technician really allowed that piano to sing just right for her. Best interpretation of Totentanz!
