The Golden Corral by me used to be good, pre-covid, it was a good spot to have dinner. I had a method to always get a good sized steak from the person manning the grill. When they ask what you want, I tell them it's their choice because they look like they know what's good. You'll almost always get a good cut. Plus some people could really use a confidence boost. I haven't been there in years, so I can't say how they are now. But they survived the pandemic after being closed for like 2 years. So I guess they're doing okay.
The school food observation is so right. Some of the shit at golden corral is good enough to go back, some of the other stuff will keep you there in the bathroom.

My dad insists on going to the Golden Corral every time we visit the USA. He’s eaten undercooked chicken from there twice, including doubling down and getting a second helping when my wife pointed out his chicken was pink.
Golden Corral's are fucking everywhere here in Utah. Aris is spot on about the place not even smelling like the food they serve. It's the Twilight Zone of chain restaurants.
The only buffets I can condone are small local Chinese or Indian places, if you go to a chain like Golden Corral or Hibachi Grill half the time you're going to eat something vile
Golden Corral can be great if you gorge on the veggies, then get some fruits, & finally go for the trash when you're about to fill up.
