Take your time! That's the lesson that old-timers in the blues world give impatient young players.
Adam Gussow, veteran harmonica teacher and player, offers useful advice about how to craft a slow 12-bar blues.

First saw this vid perhaps six years ago - it changed my playing - especially solo - having to keep an inner beat - there's no fear of the student ever exceeding the master in my case but omg I've got to say how sublimely valuable this lesson was and still is - for my style this was the only lesson I ever needed - from the depths of my heart thank you Adam !
Oh my lord, that bend at 2:50 was the most soulful sound I've ever heard! It said an entire story
So delightful 😊
Yes! That's what I want to play; all day
Your talent. If I had your talent I could play that. I started playing at 4 yrs old.
I bought a $10 Hohner BluesBand harp in the key of C the just-past Friday---everybody laughed, but I am determined to learn to play it...
Tony Jones I did the same thing about a year ago and am starting to get some Blues in me. Onward!
***** (AND Scott M), I am enjoying the harmonica almost as much as the guitar! I was planning to "retire to the stage" with a metal band but damn, these blues won't leave me alone...
Tony Jones lol good job! I which I could isolate the notes better
Tony Jones Laugh??? Ive been playin for 40 years on and off as a hobby. I rate myself a 4 on a 1 to 10 scale. But some days it all comes out sounding great. With the lessons on you tube you can sound great in a few months. GO for it!! Its awesome.
george dente I've already taken to calling myself "the Hendrix of the Harmonica!" Delusional, perhaps. but a lot of fun...
Beautiful❤
What a legend this man is. Just wanted to give some support during this covid-19 period. Home alone. Opened a drawer and saw my harps. Kinda gave up on them a few years back. I thought I was to old to learn to play them. So going to take another crack at it. Maybe not worry about learning to play sheet music just listen watch the pros and come up with my own blues style. So much to learn from these great legends. Thank you all. Peace!
ok yeah, so like 5 years later this video is still helping ppl. You're awesome Adam !
Encouraging words: "Don't be afraid to play simple" Thanks for the lesson, sir.
80+ people disliked because they don't like being told that they aren't musicians. #HumblePie
Idjits
hehehe.
Jamie : Too bad huh?
Adam admitted that he himself struggled with timing... so nobody should take offense.
I appreciate his honesty.
Jamie. - I agree with Adam. Keeping time is everything in music of all genres...
Lovely use of dynamics around 3:15 - teaching this to a private student as a study of volume changes among other things :)
Wow ur here ur actually here!!!!
This is the song that got me hooked on MBH 2 yrs ago. Now, Listening intently, and with greater appreciation to the deep-blue-soulful wail. (Noticed that @3min24sec in the background it sounded like a guy on a bicycle crashed into a garbage can.)
Taking this puppy to the woodshed. Thank you Maestro G.
I loved it the first several times I watched it, and years later, I still love it just as much.
I have a low F thunderbird and this type of stuff sounds SO GOOD on it, the purest breed of blues. It’s sound is just so heart-wrenchingly mournful.
Well, I finally found it - slow blues. Thank you. Sounds so good. How time goes by. Been listening to a lot of your vids lately. They're really great.
If I could Roll that sound into some rolling papers I would smoke it like a good joint it sounds so good!!
That's a great way of complementing....
hahaha! awesome comparision
hahaha! awesome comparision

I know I’m late to the party but been playing guitar 45 years. Learned some songs on mandolin enough to play on stage. Learning mouth harp now. Thanks Adam!

This man is my Blues Master
Adam- thank you for re-posting this lesson. Haven't heard it in over 2-1/2 years. This is one of your best!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you.....ive been watching your videos since September of 2015 I picked up the harmonica to just fool around with and realized that a lot of people from where I'm from don't hear this type of music or style I should say and 20min a day I play and I'm still learning and I look forward to seeing more new ways to manage the harmonica and create my own style.
This is still great in 2019!
My teacher got me to tab this out, with intervals etc. We used it as an exercise, not only in keeping time but also in how to play in 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions, all in one tune. It’s perfect! I have returned to this video many times over the years 😎👍
This is probably a far shot but could you maybe share the tabs? I don't think I'm quite there yet and I'd love to play some of this.
@@maddom Google YT024 Tradebit Adam Gussow for the full tab.
Here I am again, reviewing this great lesson :)
You are a great teacher. You motivate, inspire, are funny, and you make us your students wonder. Thanks Mr. Gussov!!!

A fountain of knowledge, he is so generous in giving hard earned advice to novices like myself, I know I'm a better player than I was before watching his lessens.

Es un maestro.
Hi Adam I just wanted to let you know that You have the best most comprehensive tutorials for harp playing on youtube. I love the way you address the sensitivities required to play well. I discovered this beautiful little instrument about six years ago, practicing and experiencing the harmonica has allowed me to sing from my soul in a way I never thought possible, the harmonica is an instrument of voice that can penetrate the cosmos! Thanks for shining your guiding light to all those lost in space! Peace and love brother- Dan -
thank you for your help and insights!!!!
I believe that is your best video to date very INSPIRING
That is too funky! Beautiful!
Thanks for all the lessons.real talk
Just getting started, love your videos. They really do help. Thanks.
I'm using a Hohner Chromonica C Harp and have just ordered a Special 20. I'm a beginner, but I'm learning rather well from your videos, you put on a good show and are super talented. thanks a lot
Maybe my most useful lesson . Timing. Control. Splendide
I'm not a harp player in the first line. My premier instrument is the guitar but I'm an instruments junkie and tried and try any object I can get in my clutches. One of them is the harp. Over the years I take one out of the drawer from time to time to jam a little bit, just like now.
By that occasion I peeked at YT for some hints and ideas of playing. And so I stumbled in here.
And I have to say you're a great inspiration. I like your style and your tone. Keep up this good work!
Thanks a lot!
Cheers from Berlin/Germany
This is awesome man, I learnt more about playing the harp from watching your hands and the way you use your fingers then in any other video I have seen. Thanks mate (-:

I like the atmosphere...warm spring evening, sitting on the porch, playing harmonica. I want to be like this, but first have to learn how to play, then have to wait for a warm spring evening in England...
Nice. Cool as the summer breeze... 😎

Fantastic back porch playing! Reminds me of somewhat similar harp playing towards the end of a movie called One False Move.
Anybody else know of other playing like this, please feel free to mention.
Nice work, Adam!!!
I love this
Fantastic!..I dig the shirt too!
Adam, sir, I just wanted to drop you a line after reading the Adam Walker guy's comment... I guess at this point the new generation of learners are pretty spoiled by the new breed of teachers with a load of resources and the fancy videos... I have been following you for a decade, on and off, going from a non-player to occasionally being able to play with even some pros at casual venues. Still pitiful at the Blues, but can figure out most melodies and tunes by ear, at least the melody portions. Playing the harp is no longer a total mystery, but I at least know what I Iack and need to work on. The throat and gut vibrato and being able to change keys on the chromatic harmonica are the big items for me to work on... rambling on here. To me, you're the first big teacher I was able to learn from on RUclips, and always will be. Your knowledge and the warm heart has taught a lot of people, and I owe so much to you for the learning that has occurred and the inspiration you provided for the motivation. Please keep up the good work!
Finally got my custom Bb from Spiers Harmonicas. My first custom and I got it all because I want to play this
Thank you very much! Great!
im getting a special 20 tommorow and ging to play slow blues just like you
How do you like it? I just ordered one earlier today. It'll be my first harmonica
How'd it go with you guys and learning...?
Well, it's been four years, how's that Special 20 treatin ya?
Just the sound I wanted to hear.
nairb lab mm,
May God bless you Mr Adam along with Mr Satan :-)
Greetz from Germany!! This is Amazing. slowly is better :)
Incredible, thanks for this video!
Hell yeah awesome good stuff on the harp
I totaly agree . Blues is about the feeling and not about rythm and this feelings slows me down and then got the right speed without metronom. By the way got the blues!
Love sound of the trash can being dragged to the dumpster in the background 😂
hi Adam, greetings from the UK. I find your lessons excellent and an inspiration. I have played drums for fifty years and guitar for twelve. I decided to learn harmonica about two weeks ago and bought a Suzuki key of C. With your help I can now bend notes but I am getting the impression that key of C is not best for blues, I know this is not a "forum" but I want to buy another harmonica, would key of A be better for blues?
.
Thanks a lot!
hI Adam - i loved 👍🤠
god, I love this
high Adam l remenber when ifirst met you in paris in the POMPIDOU CENTER ..
i knew you were gonna be a great harp player
by then it wad the year 1983 i used to caricTures ..The Crow
Thanks again teach. Very cool lesson. Gonna go do this amplified.
GOT IT. FINALLY, THANK YOU
Time ? = 12&34 slow but I'll keep playing with you not the same I'll play my own
If what you are playing creates an emotion then that's all that matters. Same can be said for guitar. Music can have tempos and beats, but it must have feeling.
It don't get any more bluesy or soulful than that.
