One thing to note about Taylor is from when she switched from Country to Pop music. She could've easily ditched her live band in favor of just tracks or cheap gun-for-hire's, but instead, she gave them the new record and said get to work on how to play these live. She's had essentially the same band throughout he whole career, and is extremely loyal to them.

    Taylor was playing at Wembley, Dave was playing at the Olympic Stadium the other side of London at the same time, both sold out with a similar crowd size. I think it was a mix of banter between musicians and deflection from the hate Violet was getting.

I don't want to watch them dance around to a backing track. Recently saw Disturbed and falling in reverse in Knoxville Tennessee. I was on the side where I could see under the stage and falling in reverse had more people running computers making everything sound good than I'd ever seen in my life. Disturbed on the other hand, they actually played live. Can you imagine watching a blues artist faking an improvised guitar solo? That would be insane. Also saw Toto live fairly recently and it's amazing watching Steve Lukather improvising during every song.

  • @baimun
    @baimun 12 дней назад +6

    This was a good ol' fashioned "Dad Joke" that was taken out of context. From Nirvana all the way through the Foo Fighters, Dave refuses to use a click track or backing track with queues. He'd rather smash it out old school and speed up and slow down when the song needs it... the band using audible and eyeball queues. I think most Taylor Swift fans don't realize that the majority of the songs have tracks with in-ear monitor queues... which is necessitated by the stage setup having half of the band on each side of the stage to allow for the aircraft hanger sized opening for dancers to come in and out, and also to keep Taylor singing with the band when she is half a football field away. It's also to keep all the video wall effects in sync with the performance. When she does the acoustic or piano songs (that she usually switches up from show to show) it's just her and the instrument live, and notably the video and lighting effects are minimal or simple washes. Both TS and DG are at the top of their class... they just are performing in two different physical layouts as he is the floor general in the middle of the stage with his bandmates circling him, and old school spotlights instead of video animations.

    • @AlphaLimaXray
      @AlphaLimaXray 11 дней назад +2

      Excellent explanation. I think his legit anger over what his daughter went through was a motivator to keep riffing on the joke. Add a few beers and it's easy to see how it went awry and became a possible attack on Taylor's talent and professionalism. By the way, I wouldn't be surprised if Taylor's sound techs don't use much of her acoustic rhythm guitar playing when the full band is going. Though there's no doubt she's quite proficient on the instrument.

      It’s actually been explained in details by articles from Billboard and other reputable sources that with the death of monoculture, people’s attention span going down and the endless amount of content available at one’s finger tip, it is much harder today to be “as big as the Beatles” than it was during the Beatles era.
      Sure the barrier of entry is much lower, so almost everyone can get a shot at getting in the spotlight. However, capturing such a large audience’s attention for such a long period of time, that is a lot harder.

      Its a tricky one. I was there that night too and it felt a bit like that - were Dave and the boys a little put out at not playing Wembley? I didn't know about the Violet stuff either. I did wonder why Violet was crying at the end of her performance, which made me think about what was actually happening - it seemed the emotions were more than just the occasion of the huge event. For me I guess it's a bit of everything. Like most things in life, things can get so foo-kin complicated without even trying. Wembley or 'West Ham'; 80,000+ people rocking and/or popping out has to be a good thing. It's music, it's an experience, it's people. I'll be there with 80 or 80,000 others next time. In my EXTREME T-Shirt, like I was - rocking out. 🤘😁🤘

    Having a 10 year old daughter means the Eras concert is on in my house a LOT. I never really got Taylor, never really cared, always thought "that's for someone else, but it's not for me." Then I watched her performance of "Tolerate It" and I got it. I'll never categorize myself as a Swiftie, but I understand why a particular audience is rabid for that artist and she fills up stadiums. Her songs can be quiet and intimate and in a fans earbuds where they can dissect the lyrics, and then her show is a full on other-world immersive experience complete with blinky wristbands that flow with the concert.

Paramore is a headline band with lots of great songs and a great singer. What does it say about the TS fans that hardly anyone was watching? Like the Beatles and Elvis, it is a mania. Dave has definitely been very complementary of Taylor in the past, so I definitely think this probably did have something to do with him being upset and defending his daughter since he mentioned her "wrath" before he even made the joke.
    That said, Dave is kind of old school about "live" playing though and has been very outspoken against any sort of use of backing tracks, studio tricks and really computers in music, in general. He's taken a lot of jabs at EDM over the years IIRC. So I also think he probably at least half-way meant what he said to be taken as an insult.
    I don't know, I see both sides of it all. Swifties are incredibly overreactive and overprotective about virtually any criticism which is the root of the problem. Attacking a girl for a minor criticism and then going crazy to defend the Eras Tour - a tour that has grossed over a BILLION dollars - doesn't seem like the best use of your time (I think Taylor is doing just fine). But on the other hand, criticizing Taylor for not "playing live" is a take I also don't agree with. Taylor DOES perform live to a good extent, and the parts that are backing tracks are more because the show is so much of a spectacle (tied to lights, visuals, stage theatrics, choreography) that it goes beyond just a "musical performance" IMO.

    • @AlphaLimaXray
      @AlphaLimaXray 11 дней назад

      I really don't think she uses vocal tracks at all. She has really good backing vocalists who have been with her for years. They're very in sync with her vocals, and all of these performances are thoroughly rehearsed. Does that rule out something like live Auto-Tune? No. However, I believe Taylor is too smart to risk the major embarrassment of being discovered using that, either.

    • @markbradshaw7282
      @markbradshaw7282 11 дней назад

      @@AlphaLimaXray I definitely agree with you. I was referring more to just general samples and sounds and cues being added to the otherwise live mix. There's a lot of non-organic things going on to beef up and fill out the mix (and again, I don't mean this in a negative way - it's common practice for soooo many artist). Just like using a small bit of pitch correction, it's all for the point of making it more of a spectacle and a show vs. a raw musical performance.
      I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's a really goofy thing to make fun of. haha.

I need my iPad on my stand for Kid Charlemagne, and I've been singing it for decades:) Anyway, let's all stay away from mob mentality(although, as a father, I would probably say something stupid as well if you attacked my daughter). When he added the "whaaaatt" at the end you can tell he was just poking fun and not being serious but fools without comprehension ability or Swifties (one in the same, usually) don't understand humor. Swift is an entertainer who uses very formulaic music and productions to entertain. You know what you're going to get and that's fine. Heck, a number of big artists had fantastic backing bands and weren't great musicians or sometimes singers themselves but put on a great show. Bon Jovi was a decent singer until his voice gave out but not a great musician but his band was tight. Jimmy Buffett was an average singer and guitar player but the Coral Reefers were truly top tier and Jimmy was a great story teller. While Garth Brooks is a far more talented singer and player than Swift and a lot of other people he still used a very tight production style similar to Swift to give audiences the most consistent experience. So Swift's style doesn't bother me. What has always puzzled me though is that she built such a fan base with a catalogue of five decent songs.

    I personally don’t really have much against Taylor. The only thing I think she does wrong or really what she doesn’t do is control her fan base. When you’re an artist as big as her, you are kind of responsible for your fan base in a very small way. I guarantee you if Taylor said “my favorite animal is the albino deer”, all the swifties would say the same. So when they are giving death threats, all it takes is for Taylor to say knock it off, and most would stop. Either way, respect to Taylor, she’s accomplished a lot.

    Swift is a billionaire. Every billionaire is the same. They didn't get that rich by giving everyone back what they put it. Nobody earns a billion dollars. It takes a pyramid scheme to get that rich. Swift could spend the rest of her life giving free concerts and still live like a god on Earth. Every billionaire (and every multi-millionaire too) has means beyond fathom which they neither need nor deserve. I don't care if anyone disagrees. These people are not admirable. For every Taylor Swift, there are thousands of unknown Joe's and Jane's who work much harder and make music that is just as good or even better. The rich and famous artists simply have a better marketing team and more wealthy investors.
