How to Make a Domed Ring: Part 1 | Jewelry Tips with Nancy

- Nancy shows you how to make a simple domed ring. If your husband is too cheap to buy you a ring you can make your own! Part one of a three part series.
Note from Nancy: Here is the link to the Ring Blank Sizing Chart: www.nancylthamilton.com/charts... and another link, this one to my page about Pripp's Flux: www.nancylthamilton.com/recipes/. That hammer, I couldn't recall the material of, is a Urethane hammer by Bonny Doon. Here's the link at Rio Grande Jewelry: www.riogrande.com/Product/Bonn....
Link to Dapping set at Harbor Freight: www.harborfreight.com/25-piece... $39.99 as of 10/12
Okay, I've got, yet again, another note: In the beginning of the video I say add a 1/4 ring size for comfort - if you were making a non-domed ring, add 1/8 size for comfort. I added 1/4 size because it was tight and I also knew that when I domed the ring it would shrink.
Once again, I apologize for my inability to recall the names of tools, objects and people and for not using a script or a teleprompter!
One more link: I was looking at the Bonny Doon Vertical Vise (www.riogrande.com/Product/Bonn...) and thinking how much I could use it but, I'm cheap and didn't want to spend 250.00 plus tax and shipping. I found this thing called a pipe vise or bench yoke vise and thought it would probably do fine for holding ring mandrels and bezel mandrels. So, I ordered one. I'll check it out and let you all know. Here's a link to one of the more inexpensive ones: I purchased this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B000CRBHTY/?.... at 156.00. There are other, less (and more) expensive ones. This Shop-Tek one is only 29.99: www.amazon.com/dp/B0056HQ7X6/?.... The Bonny Doon vise is beautiful and is great with the tools that they have designed for it. I was just looking for a new mandrel holder and thought I'd take a chance. Who knows, might be a return in my future.

Nice project to get into. I hadn't thought of using the doming punches for this purpose. Cool. Great video, onto the next part. Cheers Nancy.
Love your videos 😊 That little crazy vice was cracking me up
😂😂😂
Loved this❤ thank you Nancy! You are a joy to watch!
Nancy L.T. Hamilton... I am so enjoying your videos.. your a gem!
Please keep them coming and keeping everything light and entertaining.
Hello Miss Nancy. Thank you for your videos. My dad, grandpa and all of my great uncles were steel millers or coal miners. I inherited ALOT of tools as they all had hobbies in metal work and leather work. I didn't get to learn too much of their hobby tricks and tips but I'm glad that your videos help me out so much ! Thanks again !
I love your tutorials Nancy! I am completely self-taught and no where near making your kind of jewelry but your vids are inspiring and I am hoping to slowly learn and improve my skills. Thanks for your vids!
Lady, You are WAY COOL. Thank you sincerely for explaining so many things that many other instructors omit. So much VALUABLE information! I appreciate the fact also that for those of us working on a shoestring that you give options to an outcome. I love the way you guys present your material, and it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one sometimes at a loss for my words, and believe me when I say you recover quite well! Smooches!
Nancy, you're too funny! Thanks for the no-nonsense lessons.
Nancy you are a gem! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent. You are inspiring! I'm so glad I found you and no doubt will improve my skills thanks to you.
Hi Nancy, I'm so happy to have discovered your channel. You're a wonderful teacher! Not to fast and not to slow. (Referring to your instructions of course.) I've already started projects using your techniques. Keep 'em coming girl!
Thanks so much Nancy!!! I love getting the email notification that you have uploaded a new video. Your work is so easy to follow and I love your sense of humor! Thanks for taking the time to share your work process. :)

Love the stand that holds your ring mandrel!
Nancy, you are my favorite metalsmith.
As usual a great video and you are a great teacher. I will try not to rush with the project I am working on to do this funny ring, but I know me!!! Thanks so much for sharing and looking forward to part 2. Keep it coming!!!!!!
The room you're in :O it's beautiful!
Love your videos Nancy!!! :) You're amazing!
very cool! great job, you always have great advice. I think i always over think my projects. Yes copper is my enemy when i try and solder it.
Informative and entertaining. Thanks!!
Hi Nancy, wonderful video as usual. I simply think you are a fabulous teacher and wish I was a more efficient student! lol. I love this and will try this soon. I have everything I need except the vise which I will have by then. Thank you thank you thank you!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you, Nancy! xo
Nancy, you're a wonderful sport. Thank you for tolerating my comment on the openings being too long for me. No the tool talk is fine. And yes I do fast forward over the yada stuff; however, I do want to hang onto your every brilliant word; thus, I feel like I'm going to miss out on something.
Thank you Nancy. I always learn something with your videos! P.S. Love your humor.
Fab. video and SO informative! What I'm learning from you, Nancy L. T. Hamilton, is worth it's weight in gold :-)
I'm such a fan of your expressionism.
Just found this video and I have to say not only was it informative, it was also fun!! I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos! Great job! (BTW...I WANT your studio!!!) Lol!!
Thanks Sharee! Appreciate the nice comments!
Great as always :)
You are hilarious! And very talented
Hi Ceafva, Thank you. Glad you found it okay. Thanks for the feedback on the video beginning(s). I started doing the tool intro because some people didn't know what the tools were and what they were for. Maybe I'll speed the intro up a bit in the future, in the meantime - fast forward past my babbling lips. Take care and thanks again. N
And, occasionally clean! Thanks. Nancy
Very informative
HI Yifatiii, As an update, I just found this thing called a bench yoke vise or a pipe vise, that is used to hold pipes for sawing. It opens to 2". I just ordered one to check it out as a ring/other mandrel holder. Don't have it yet, though. I put the link under my video description. Take care and talk to you soon. Nancy
Nancy, I did purchase it from ToolUSA. It should arrive within the week. Thank you for your response. Keep up the excellent videos, I love them (except sometimes the intro is too long for my patience - I apologize for that). Blessings, Catherine from Virginia
Hi Nancy, LOVE watching your tutorials! I don't see where your website's listed though- to get the printable ring sizing chart. I haven't found one that showed the differences in metal gage like you mentioned yours has. Really looking forward to finding your chart. Please list your website for me?? Thanks!
Sorry if I missed it, What is the gauge of the shank/ sheet metal? Thank you for these videos!!! I learn SO much!!!
Hi Missy, Well, you could etch it - after you domed it and before soldering on the setting. You can also engrave the piece after making it. It depends on your skill level and your tools. You can also texture the finished band (sans setting) using texture stamps or hammers . The ring needs to be on the dap to do this and they may have to be reshaped a bit. Etching or engraving, would be best. Do after finishing because the pattern will be hammered out in the forming. Hope this helps. N
THANK YOU! Ur video was REALLY helpful! Can u tell me how I can burn or carve in designs or write things ON the actual ring itself?... that would help me out quite a bit! Thanks again!
Wow, thanks Nancy. Welcome. New video filming this week (10/11/12). Looking forward to chatting with you. Nancy
Hi again Multi, As usual, I appreciate your kind words. As soon as the producer gets back (hopefully, with a few brain cells left) from Burning Man, we will get to part two. Thanks again. Nancy
Hey Lavonne, Honestly, I'm still deciding if it was worth the cost. I'm looking at the Freitz HMR7 with plastic inserts but, that ain't cheap either at 73 buckeroonis. Still have to try the Bonny Doon with the anticlastic stake. Thanks for watching. Nancy
Thank you so much Secret! Kisses. N
Old vid, but hoping you still see this question! I have seen other artists using a dapping block to dome the ring....why do you prefer to use dap in vice? Thank you!
It is much easier to begin doming the metal from flat and progressively form it to a ring before soldering. I do what you describe here only at the end to adjust the doming and the roundness.
Can I do this if I’ve soldered on some small designs into the top if my metal first? They go all the way around the band.
Nancy, where did you get your ring mandrel stand? Love the solidness of it.
is there a particular reason you used the hide mallet rather than the urethane hammer to "raise" the ring dome upon the dapping tool in the vise?
Hi Nancy! I'm sorry I'm new to youtube and I cant work out how to find your website can you please tell me what its called?? And thank you so much for doing these film clips they have helped so much!!
TY
Nancy, why did you say to coat in props flux for fire scale, and not alcohol with borax, as you show in another video? I'm self teaching, and am nervous about having flammable fluid on my counter by an open flame.
How would i do a dome ring in just part of the ring? I just want to dome the top of my ring how would i do this ?
She’s good 😊🎃
Gotta be a regular "file clerk" for this project, huh, Nancy? Air file. Like air guitar, I bet. Very cool project. Thanks!
What brand of hammer are you using???
You know how I like "STUFF"ing! Thank you so much for the fabulous comment. New video next week - part two of the domed ring and many more to come (God willing and the creek don't rise). Nancy
I really need a compass like that. So many tools I need 😭
is that copper solder or silver solder?
Thankyou Nancy - you rescued me from Trump insanity. I love your brand of sanity. much more fun and sane.
Continued: Don't forget a stand or some way to hold it while hammering. riogrande (dot) com/Product/Mandrel-Holder/112385. You could also drill a hole into a piece of thick wood (that fits the end of the mandrel) and mount the wood to a desk - sideways. Let me know if you need more info.Take care. Nancy
Hi again Yifatiii, You want a steel ring mandrel with sizes engraved in it. To confuse you even more, there are different shapes too: oval, square, finger shaped, flat sided. If you want just round, go with something like this: riogrande (dot) com/Product/Tapered-Ring-Mandrel/112366?pos=1. Prices vary. Just get steel, sizes 1 - 12 @ least (some go to size 16), have ring sizes in at least 1/4 sizes. Continued on next comment.
Hey VC, well, I'm buying the stake! Tool Ho here! Kisses. N
Hi again Ceafva, You know, it's so old, I just can't recall. Probably from Al Pine who is now deceased. Believe it or not, I found one on Amazon dot com. Just type in Ring Mandrel Stand. It's from ToolUSA and is about 34.00. It's a nice one. Talk to you later. N
Hey Dharlanna, Thank you so much - kisses to you! Have fun and enjoy that vice. Is it a manly vice or a big girl vice? Nancy
I want that bonny doon hammer so bad but it cost $87 :(
Can’t see pattern
LOL It's non existent yet, but I will get one soon. =)
Thanks very much! Will be making one soon! Http://www.clearwaterdesignsbyk.etsy.com
This woman's jewelry looked really good when I saw it on another video that actually showed a close-up photo of it, so I started to watch it. I am irritated that she does not seem to have done much preparation for the lessons before the camera starts rolling (in this one she didn't even put her hair up before she went into the soldering room). I am truly glad that Nancy is so pleased with her "wit," but I am saddened that she chats FAR MORE than she instructs. These videos should be about one-quarter to one-third as long as they are because she talks so much about nothing. I am glad that she is able to laugh at herself, and I say more power to her for that reason, but I am very sorry to say that I find her chatter too tedious to watch a video from start to finish. I am even sorrier to say that she is so tedious that I cannot bring myself to watch her series of videos because I would very much like to learn to make her lovely and professional-looking jewelry! I guess this comment got tedious, didn't it? Sorry.
No-one gives a damn what you think you big bore. Move along.
