Wow! First time seeing a dapping block and a press. So fascinating to morph shapes like that. I love it! Every single thing about jewelry making is like a universe unto itself. Making jewelry combines so many trade skills and disciplines - chemistry, structural, mechanical, forging, soldering, welding, material science, enamel work, ceramic and glass work, wire work, and so on. As an avid DIYer, I am just in love with jewelry and the making of it. The more I look into making, the less I buy jewelry. My mind says, 'just make it yourself!'. And so I do. Thank you, Skylar for showing us this whole other world. I am thrilled! By the way, Harbor Freight has the Dapping blocks for $46. Also presses, vise, punch sets, files, etc. Pick with care of course. Some are good, some not.
I love the idea of putting just any ring into the doming block to to either size it or just get that rounded look! I never saw that before & I've watched 100s of jewelry videos. Thank you for being my "learn something new every day" today!
Thanks for this video. I have these and it did work to get me started but o still had to get a ri g sizer and a set of Swedish dies to make nice rings. My first few attempts had alot of hammer marks and where very hard to get a nice ring shape.

Love your work,A Few years ago you asked Fence kid about the patina that he does on his rings,At the time you were looking for something that would be more permanent.Theres a type of Sterling silver called Siam silver,it always depicts an oriental person dancing, but they use a type of patina to make the picture. How,I'm not sure, but it's a start.Plus, the jewelry is beautiful.

I have a 6 ton hf press and I don’t have enough clearance to get the doming block along with the steel ball bearing on top in it. I actually bought the press to dome beer caps using the steel balls but was planning to eventually get into making coin earrings and maybe rings. I’m so frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated
can you make a a coin ring with only a dapping block, a mandrel, a torch, a ball bearing, a punch and die kit, a ring stretcher, and a 1 ton press? im 17 and on a budget. love your vids!
Coin Rings from The Mint - Change You Can Wear thanks for the response, one last question: what do you think about a hand powered ring stretcher, like this one: SE JT149RS Size 6 & Up Ring Stretcher www.amazon.com/dp/B0013TK2OQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_8MIKzbS1SQRFJ
I've made several that have come out fantastic, with only a drill to drill the hole, a large punch that's tapered just like the shape of a ring sizing mandrel and a block that's 3"x6" of the same material as a nylon hamer, yes it takes a good bit of work, and a bit of practice to get it right, but it means so much more when the final product comes out looking great, gives me the right to say that I 100% hand hammered that, hand made in America.
Hey, it might be a stupid question but. Why dont you just size it on the ring stretcher? It has thoose reduction dies on it right? Why not use thoose instead of using the doming block. And, did you flip the coin around when you were sizing the ring on the doming block? Like, did you push it down a bit on the side , and then the other side? Is it possible to use a Half ton arbor press instead? To push the punches through the coin And to size the ring like you did in this video?
hey Skylar love your videos and have learned lots from watching you, I keep having a problem with this step reducing half dollars. when I use the press to reduce the ring it keeps shifting sideways I can't figure out how to evenly reduce it down with my doming block, any suggestions? thanks
I'm a beginner and have made some rings for gifts. When they are sized, I follow your instructions for polishing. My clad quarters are turning their fingers black. What am I doing wrong?
That isn't anything you are doing wrong. That is happening because the copper snd nickel in the coin is reacting to your skin. I hsve noticed that after a few days it mostly stops happening for many people. I am wearing one right now and I am not having that problem but the first few days I was. The 90% silver coins don't have that problem at all. Thanks! Skyler
The ebay link has expired. Any idea what the diameter of spheres were? I've bought 2 different ones that jump from 25 to 30mm. I need the 22,25,28 and 30 obviously lol
Thank you for the video, super helpful! I found dapping blocks, however they all seem to come with doming punches. I'd like to use a handle-less sphere instead as you did in the video. Can you tell me where to find those? (PS. The ebay link in the description is expired) Thanks!
I have used a vice and the block to do that final sizing. Of course being horizontal, trying to hold the block, the ring, the socket all straight while tightening is difficult. I bought an arbor press but haven't tried it yet.
I'm new into coin ring making, do you think a cheap 18 dollar ring stretcher will work? I don't want to spend a lot on many on an expensive ring stretcher.
I noticed that sizing a ring down, completely removed any design on the edges. I also have to go back and sand down those lips it makes, but im using a mandrel/press with a dye it came with. Makes the edges just kinda smashed.
3/4 through the video and I discover a HUGE missing step: the ring stretcher. I might have the tool but I have no idea because the entire step was cut out for some reason.
