  • Conductor and arranger Vellu Halkosalmi spent over ten years searching for scores of the music Quincy Jones wrote for his big band in the '50s & '60s. While rewriting the scores from existing records, Halkosalmi got in touch with Quincy Jones, who helped him to put this project together.
    This video includes performances of Moanin' and Birth of a Band by the Metropole Orkest Big Band, conducted by Vellu Halkosalmi (De Oosterpoort, Groningen - 10 March 2014).
    Trumpet solo on Moanin' by Ruud Breuls
    Saxophone solo's on Birth of a Band by Leo Janssen & Sjoerd Dijkhuizen
    Drum solo on Birth of a Band by Martijn Vink

    Wow! Thank goodness for RUclips. Keep finding such great bands. These guys are tremendous. All the best jazz seems to be in Europe.

    • @bootsieginger1
      @bootsieginger1 4 года назад +6

      That's because in the US jazz has been relegated to the bottom of the music genre. Often it's hard to find a radio station that solely plays jazz. Europe embraced American jazz (and American music in general) DECADES ago and never let it go.

    • @k2playpedroariel481
      @k2playpedroariel481 Год назад +1

      @@bootsieginger1 And you know what? Most Japanese composers and musical or vocal groups are very much inspired on European Jazz music, especially with that unique use of pretty complicated harmonies and chords, which you don't see much often in mainstream contemporary music from overseas...

    • @viderethevaccinatorfromhol7536
      @viderethevaccinatorfromhol7536 3 месяца назад

      Unfortunately, this is true. However, Europe has a respectable jazz history of its own. Also, some of the greatest jazz legends felt at home here, or even better. Nina Simone literally lived in the same apartment building as me for a while. (In the Netherlands).
