Why did they play it so much slower than the original Basie 'Live at the Sands' recording?
Check the original studio version.

Because it is a Quincy Jones arrangement
Why not?
Because it is exactly the same tempo as the studio recording for which this arrangement was written, and subsequently won a Grammy. That it was performed faster on a subsequent live performance is common for many big bands of the era

They are just behind the John Wilson Orchestra
So what is your point re the video?
You bet!
But the BBC basically sound balances John Wilson's outfit like a classical acoustic performance, whereas the marvellous Metropole Orch is a multimiked, compressed sound with greater punch. Put another way: if JW's outfit was balanced the Metropole way they would sound very different.

Love it, but it sure sounds exactly like the Ray Charles arrangement.
It's transcribed from the Count Basie 'Live At The Sands' version, which is significantly faster than how they played it here.
