I just wanted to thank you! I work at a day program for autistic adults working toward independence; we're going to be making jigsaw puzzles on our laser cutter and you gave me a lot of great tips that I'll take to the students! Thanks!
1:20 omg! i made a couple of puzzles a while ago, and i had trouble getting them off the engraving lattice. putting tape on it would have made things so much easier xD (although getting them back off might be a fiddly nightmare xD)
Haha I keep telling myself I’ll get the super strong tape to pull off the protective layer, but I never seem to do it. I guess if I had more projects like this one I would definitely get it.
One trick I have seen several times, on removing tape/masking like this, use sticky duct tape in a loop shape. Use it as a tool to pull the masking off the small parts. It's quite quick and saves those fingernails.
@@ibrahimumaralisjahbana9522 for masking I use transfer 'tape'. Comes in large rolls like 12in wide and 300 feet long. Works amazing and doesn't leave a residue. Don't get the high tack stuff... it's too sticky. You want low tack, as it is just enough to seal and stay, bit comes off easy. It's a paper material, tougher than masking tape and doesn't tear easily Then loops of duct tape pull off the tiny bits when doing fine work.
I am seriously thinking about purchasing the glow forge and love your style!!! I love puzzles and probably will be doing something like this if I get the laser!
Thanks Lana! Puzzles are fun to make and if you get the Glowforge premium membership after you buy one, they now have a simple to use puzzle maker that will generate it for you. If you decide to get one, don’t forget to get a referral for a discount up to $500 on a pro. Here’s mine in case you need one glowforge.us/r/VYSKLGWM
How bad is the kerf with these puzzle pieces? Do they lock together like a professionally made puzzle or do the pieces float around? I think I am going to have to separate all the pieces and expand them by .1mm.
The puzzle pieces stick together very well. It’s thicker than professionally made puzzles which are usually 2 ply chipboard or thick museum board. I’d say it doesn’t exactly stick together like a puzzle manufacturer’s would, but it’s good for a custom puzzle.
Can the Glow Forge laser cutter be used to create prismatic cuts in colored or transparent materials? If so this would be a cool optical illusion to add to puzzle pieces. By shifting the pieces around they can reveal new colors and shapes...perhaps even hidden shapes that reveal themselves as a puzzle inside the puzzle? Almost the earliest stages of an Optical Fractal puzzle :)
I learned to laser cut in school! There are lots of project ideas I had, but didn’t spend the time to try while I had access. Glad I could make them now 😁

That’s great! Glad to have inspired ideas for your class and you 😁
Very nicely done
Thank you!
This was fantastic! I wonder if this could be used to make puzzles with pictures on them.
Does every square puzzle have the same amount of pieces on all sides

@@LaserMadeProducts thanks Tim!! Appreciate it a lot!
Do you need to clean each piece to remove the soot /burn caused by the laser?
Not for some materials when you protect the surfaces with paper masking. The sides cut clean and don’t leave behind any soot

I'm not sure if it'll be able to create prismatic cuts, but that's a very creative idea. Love it!
Great project Tim! How long did it take to remove all the tape?
Thanks Dennis! It took about 20 minutes. It would’ve been a lot easier with strong duct tape over the masking tape 😆
Program name for jigsaw puzzle please
Hi there - the laser cutting company Glowforge has it as part of their interface. It auto generates the puzzle
Should've finessed my school's laser cutter back in secondary with this 🤧

Awesome! That puzzle looks impossible to solve haha
I dropped a 25% of the pieces when I was transporting it and it took a while to figure out where they were supposed to go! 😆
