i have a question i don't have 3000 dollars to spend on a laser cutter 😅what would be your best alternative?
You can get precut blank jigsaw puzzles from various places. I get them through bulk t-shirt blank suppliers, but you can find them on Amazon, too. Attach the photo the same way, then recut by hand using a jeweler's saw (these are not very expensive).
You can lazercut in one of architecture stationary
David, I really like the direction you moved to with your channel! Your personality, style, and creativity are much more unrestrained, and you're free to be your best self now that you have someone to help you so you don't have to spend so much effort on the filming directly! Keep them coming!
Probably the coolest project I've seen all year!
We love puzzles and never thought of making our own. Definitely going to the "make" list ;-)
I've made puzzles for the last 3 years on a scroll saw. clearly it takes a lot of time and patience to ensure a proper fit. the majority of the wood projects you have done are within the scope of the tools I have. I don't own a $5K laser cutter so I guess I am stuck with an old method.
note of advice....if using a scroll saw, you should make 2 puzzles at once with the pictures facing each other on the inside of the cut to minimize tear out. works 75% of the time due to blade and speed issues.
HDR is easy to overdo, you struck a great balance and made the photo hyperreal and not overdone. Wonderful restraint! This is a great video.
Thanks! You are right about it being easy to overdo. I actually made this HDR photo about 5 years ago and when I look at it now I think I did slightly overdo it. But more than anything, when I look at the photo I remember walking down that road. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply, David! I used to cringe a little when I looked at my early HDR photos, but now I think of HDR as documenting the memory of a scene and not the reality of it.
Awesome work! Now to win the lottery so I can buy a laser...
your creativity is just gold David. and that photo!
Thanks Albert!
There was just a discussion over on the woodtalk forums on how woodworkers are more willing to share their knowledge and how photography forums are all about gear instead of being better at photography. Cool that you mixed in a little talking about how you made the photograph better.
Man, this might be my most favorite video you've ever done. I loved this project!!!
Right on! Thanks Mike!
Curious if you tried flipping the piece over (photo side down) to avoid the hassle with the painters tape?
Love the video David, im really enjoying the new style of commentating while working rather than voice over, it give a more personal and polished feel. Love your work.
This would make a great gift for family and/or friends.
Nice Stranger Things music :) Just finished the series last night. Awesome project man, super creative.
Great job on the HDR processing . . . huge fan of HDR!! Another terrific video!
what is the exact thickness for the card stock?
and what is the type of paper you used to print ? was it half glossed ? Photo Paper? Matt?
I want to known these information too 🤗👍
Watched your video on the notebooks you did on the laser and that prompted me to find a local MakerSpace. FOUND ONE! This is a great project. Curious how long the puzzle took to cut out on the laser. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Quite original! Perfect execution David. Enjoying your work so much. Regards!
Right on!! I'm loving what you're doing on your channel! Keep up the great work!
+Make Something I truly thank your support. Your quit inspiration for me on woodworking and RUclips.
That is Awesome. From start to finish.
This is the best!!!! I'm 100000000% defiantly going to try this!
I like the "story" feel of this video and the project came out great as usual. Thanks David.
That's one bad ass photo David. The rule of thirds really lives in that shot.
Nice project also. Like the box top. JimE
wow, diverse skills in one vid! Like it a lot! Also thumbs up for mentioning Inkscape, I use it all the time for patterns and it works on whatever I use (Ubuntu or Mac, even Windows)
So Cool David! Very Creative:)
What kind of laser cutter did you use where did you buy it
That is a gorgeous photo, the contracting made it look almost surreal, it was just beautiful
Right on! Thanks!
I’m looking for a SVG for for puzzles with at least 350 pieces. Don’t seem to be able to find anything. Any suggestions as to where I can look?
This is a good project, and I hate to be critical because I'm really a big fan, but it looked like all the pieces were comprised of only a few different shapes so it could be put together in many different ways...which could actually be quite fun if you used the right image. Now to go check out that laser cutter!
Very cool. I have tried this before without tape and had lots of scorch marks. Tape is a good idea.
What was the cost of the materials to do this? How much time did it take?
love your channel, that is why I keep coming back for more, keep sharing!
good day
A very good skill here .
Where can o ne get trained and how much is the tuition?
Very cool idea, I will try this if I ever get a laser cutter!
NICE photo!!-always wanted to journey to Alaska..pretty cool project.....different..nice worm dave!🖒🖒💥
Awesome idea and it came out great
Awesome David. Great picture too!
Nice Job!
Many Public Library's are now creating Fab-Lab's with laser engravers.
If your Library doesn't have one you could spearhead a mission to purchase one.
I love this.... So much .... i will keep in touch with you sir. Thank you...
Very sweet project Mr David
Thanks!
I was watching your videos and was wondering if you made that exacto handle or if you bought it.
amazing
I wish I had such equipment, this must be hugely satisfying to make own puzzles like that ❤ ❤ ❤
great Job ! please tell what the program are you using to draw puzzlelines on the Photo ?
Adobe Illustrator
Very nice David, I love the project! You probably already experimented with this and I have limited laser experience, but what if you cut the pieces from the back side of the puzzle? Would that limit the amount of burning on the front?
Very cool project.
Thanks!
is that any alternative way bout the laser cutter?
Nice video, think this is my favourite project yet
Right on!! Thanks Harry!
Some of the links don't work anymore... I am specifically looking for the spray adhesive and the size of the board. Any help would be appreciated.
I don't know the size of the board anymore but the spray adhesive is like "Super 77"
So Freakin' CoOL! That's why you're channel is so addictive! 2 Thumbs way up!
Nice done Bob! Love the HDR photo 😀
Xander Van Wassenbergh his name is not bob bro
Can I buy that photograph or is there a way I can get it digitally?
When in doubt, sound it out. Loving the new style, buddy. Great video!
Nice project David, I love the dynamics of the video too.
Use a hand held hair dryer on low setting to loosen the adhesive on the tape.
Great photo and I love what you did to it
Thanks!
This is real neat! Did you try just putting the photo upside down in the laser cutter instead of putting tape on the photo side? It seems like taking the tape off each piece is a little tedious. I like your new style of videos with the camera person.
Thanks! I'm having tons of fun! The laser burns both sides.
aah, so even if it was photo side down, you'd still want to protect the photo side with tape? (I've never used a laser cutter).
Correct! Thanks for watching!
Nice to see tape trick in action on the other continent. What brand of tape did you use?
Great work! Could you have used thin wood as the puzzle pieces instead? Would the laser cut through something like that?
Thanks! Yes, the laser will up up to 1/4". I actually though about using wood but decided to use cardboard.
Cool project and awesome photograph! Lasers looks super fun and can really open up the creative possibilities.
Also, love the new format of videos!
When folding cardboard, lightly score the inside bend with a razor. It makes it super easy to bend and it looks good with a share corner.
Awesome project and video dude! I am studying photography at the moment, using different film cameras and double exposing scenes of nature. I love what you did with your photo! What Stanley knife/scalpel did you did you use?
Thanks!!! I'm using this knife: ergokiwi.com/
Great project! Thank you for introducing me to HDR photos, never heard of that name before but I always thought that those photos look amazing.
This was pretty awesome, David! Good job!
step 1: buy a $2000 dollar laser engraver
Yea, as a photographer myself, it begs the question: How many of these puzzles would I have to sell, and at what price, in order to break event on the engraver? It can probably be done in a matter of time.
Super cool and what a great picture!
I liked the idea, great work..!
Perfekr! Good job!!!
Dude love the photo you took looks amazing and the puzzle to
Complimenti per i tuoi video!
Optionally you could get an acid free backing from the frame shop. A roller called a brayer would be good for the gluing
I would like to see more laser projects, this one is a great idea.
Love this project! That pic is great! An alternative for those of us that don't have the laser is a scroll saw! I also like the box you made with the 1/4" ply. Very simple and nice. Is that the HD "sande" plywood?
How much do you think a puzzle that size would be able to be sold for?
cool project, would be great for the kids too.
That came out pretty good 🤓
Hey man awesome project where did you get that drop down stop on your sled?
Nice project! Great info.
Thanks!
Great video and great idea. Laser cutter a bit expensive for casual occasional use. Are there any services that would do the cutting? My grandids would love this! How would I find them?
Some libraries have laser cutters and many large cities have maker spaces with laser cutters. I haven't looked but there might even be a custom puzzle service.
Awesome!
very cool puzzle
I'm glad you use inkscape for you project.
Great vid and project
awesome!!
I haven't explored the HDR functions of Lightroom yet. You have a tutorial video you can recommend?
I've never done it in Lightroom. I actually made this HDR in Photoshop about 5 or 6 years ago.
video was great david. felt like i was watching tv
Does your wife work the video camera? It's feel really cool with the all the movements. I definitely enjoyed this video!!
Thanks! I have a video assistant in the shop with me.
+Make Something sounds expensive but I hope you can keep them working they add a lot to your videos.
RigginVeggies Thanks! It's an investment that I'm sure will pay off! Thank you for watching!
can you send us the PDF for the jigsaw template please ?
Great project, great picture, still not feeling the love for the moving/wobbly camera style
awesome work! Do you work with metals also? If yes, can you make a wire stripper mashine? :)
OK... now that's freakin AWESOME
Thanks!
Nice
great photo..
Amazing!
100% badass
Where can I go to get my own picture done for me on a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle?
Great video friend! Like
Well... there goes my last kidney.
Really cool project! I like how the end card looked...that was neat with the project in the background.
Are you not worried about fire from glue?
Tip from my exp. if you need to peal layer of tape from a bunch of small peaces I find it easiest to do by adding new layer of tape over them (taping them together) - after that you flip it over and "peal" thick pieces - they come off clean 99% of the time. That way you save on time - not the tape thou :D
Whoa! Great tips!! Thanks!!
You are welcome. You know how they say - -knowledge is only thing that increases by sharing :D
Dada blank puzzel er link ta dao.
Alas, I can't afford a "laser beam", have to settle for mutated sea bass...
Are they ill tempered?
+Azayles Absolutely!
+Arron Olson Oh well, that's a start.
