- I'll step you through the process of creating a landscape that can fool the eye!
The game changer when it comes to model railroad landscaping is the type of ground cover you use, there are plenty of techniques and this is just one of those that can yield fantastic results.
I try to post regular videos, feel free to subscribe and get the latest videos as soon as i post them.
Enjoy :)
You are like the Bob Ross of dioramas. I could watch your stuff all day.
thanks Jacob 😀
I knew I wasn't going to be the only guy that thought that! Like Bob Ross, you show that you're a master of your art by making it look easy. It's obvious you put more than the 10,000 hours into honing your skills. Great work, Mr. Towan.
I think everyone will agree with you!!
Omg I was thinking the same thing ... I've looked at other videos but his like so relax to listen to u
just want to keep watching
You're a real expert! I've found my new favorite channel!
wow thanks mate :) glad you're enjoying the channel :)
Thanks Luke, this provides so many techniques we can use on other projects. It’s been a real step forward for me to use more natural materials. Thanks for your channel - inspiring.
I love watching your hobby videos. I wish I could buy this landscape from you. Its so awesome. I would put it in my living room on display ;)
That was magnificent, I can learn some helpful tips from you, watching you making these brilliant sceneries makes me wanna do the same.
you describe the process so clearly...excellent video.
Great clip. You got all the info in there, without waffling on forever like so many clips I end up having to wade through.
struck2soon Thanks mate, I try to keep my videos short and to the point with only the factual info in there that's needed. I get frustrated at some videos that like you said waffle on forever before they get to the actual point!
Cheers
Luke.
Raises an interesting point: because there was so much info and nothing superfluos, I found my self concentrating really hard with no time for mentally drifting off!
Perhaps the most informative in the least amount of time ...Well done !! Thank you for sharing
+Rich Palmieri Thanks mate, I tried to make it straight forward and to the point. Glad you liked it.
Cheers
Luke.
In art class we use to take a file to the pastel to make powder. Nice video. TY.
Thanks for the tip :)
Thanks heaps Luke, new to your channel and ready to start scenery on my layout here in sunny Queensland. Great to see your techniques.
+Darren Lee Thanks Darren, good luck with the scenery on your layout. Just remember to tackle small areas at a time.
Thanks for the great comment.
Cheers
Luke.
Every time you say "fine", I hear fun :D
Such an entertaining video Luke - i literally went and bought all the products that you showed and they are all working great!@!!! keep up the good work!!!! Love the easy to listen to voice too :D
excellent :) all the products in this video are basically used in all my other scenery videos. A little will go a long way :)
Cheers
Luke
And don't worry, I'm sure you will be hearing more of my voice in the very near future :)
the shallow depth of field in the last photo kind of breaks the illusion. If you can, try and taking the photo with a f-stop of over 10 or even 16 . that way you'll have several planes on your photo focused and the effect will be much more real
Yeah I agree, thanks for the tip :)
nice
That's really cool. Sitting in a car on your own diorama. What will you think of next? I really love your videos. I've learned quite a bit from watching and now am a subscriber. Keep up the great tutorials. Rusty.
wow,. thanks mate, I've been reading all your comments and I'm glad to have you as a subscriber :) I hope you continue to enjoy the videos.
Cheers
Luke
Great clip and tips on the scenary will be trying this out.. Thanks for sharing your tips
***** Thanks mate, I'll definitely be making more videos in the future with plenty more tips and techniques. Cheers, Luke.
Wonderful!
must have been alot of editing to add yourself in the truck! Keep it up babe!! Before you know it you'll be reaching the stars...the ones that are really far! :-) LOVE YA!
Anna Meresi Towan Yeah, I've gotten better at the editing part. But yeah that one did take a while to figure out! Love you too.
Thanks Luke. Interesting materials used and thanks for sharing.
Richard Redcastle No worries Richard, thanks for commenting ;)
some guy: There! Took 5 hours to make the most realistic train diorama that has ever existed!
Luke Towan: **exists**
some guy: why do I hear boss music
Awesome work sir.
Thanks for the video.
Great 'how to'! The scene turned out fantastic!
***** Thanks Deryk, it was easier than I anticipated. I always looked in awe at photos in magazines and wondered how on earth did they do it! But with some trial and error, I think I'm getting closer to achieving the realistic look I'm after. Thanks for the great comment.
you should do a under water thing
Hi Luke, brilliant video. I am in the process of building my 1st model railroad. I have got to a stage of laying a flat sheet of foam on the baseboard. I am in two minds as to which colour to paint the foam . I want a terrain just like the video but with some small hills.. Two questions, how did you create the terrain in the video and what that bag in the first part of the video. Thanks
I mostly use 'Scuplptamould' to form the hills and ridges but you could also use scrunched up newspaper and plaster cloth as well. The bag just had dirt in it, I use the dirt sifted down to add texture over all the land areas.
Good luck with you layout :)
Cheers
Luke
Hi Luke, great vid mate, got referred to you by ModelerMan Mike. Great to hear another Aussie accent and looking forward to seeing more of your stuff! Cheers, Dan
TheMisterdan01 Oh cool, just had a look at your channel as well. It looks good. I didn't realize there was an Aussie made static grass applicator! cool! I'm sure we'll be hearing from each other often. Thanks for the great feedback. Cheers, Luke.
Thanks Luke that would be great, no worries at all, catch you then, cheers
Excellent work, Luke!
Very helpful video, THANK YOU👍👌*****
Thanks from Qld Luke. Great instructional and interesting videos, and as others have said, to the point and no waffling on and on. I've subscribed so I can watch all the others that you've done.
+Old Bloke Thanks mate, I too get frustrated with videos that tell you one thing in the title and then waffle on about other stuff. Thanks for the great positive comment. I have another video that will be out on Saturday afternoon about making street lights so you'll have to stay tuned.
Cheers
Luke.
Thunderbirds are GO!
Great video and excellent work one question tho how wide was the road?
Hi Luke I like the trees you show in this video that you got from China do you still have the link as to where to buy them as they are pretty good looking trees.
Blessings
You're great! Thanks for all. Eddie
Great job and more patience!
A question: What scale has vehicles?
Is very realistic.
Totally enjoy all yours videos. Luke can you tell me where do you order the cheap trees from?
Luke, you mentioned the importance of using clay for the base of your scenery. We don’t have clay in my part of Canada. Can you suggest an alternative? Thanks SO much.
Another great and useful video... Thanks for the effort, very well done!!!!
njRRtrainer Thanks again mate, I do spend a lot of time making these videos so it's great to see and hear that they are somewhat appreciated.
Cheers
Luke.
exelente eres muy creativo y estas maquetas se ven muy realistas
Awesome diorama,love it.
Jon Blakeney Thanks Jon, this is just a grain of rice compared to the great diorama you did.
Awsome i love these videos. Are you Australian?
Hi Luke! I love your work! What is the scale you usualy do your dioramas?
You are like a boss .l am a big fan of yours
Im gonna try this at home
Cool Luke:) great northern ! I like it:)
+40belowful Yeah it's hard to beat, I love the scenery up in the north too.
Cheers
Luke
Awesome tips!
Yet another great video Luke. How do you do the mountain backround? It looks very real (sky etc), is it a photo?
Paul Alderson Thanks Paul, The mountains are actually real mountains :-) I took the diorama outside and photographed it against the mountains behind our house. It would have been quite funny if you told me the background looks fake...lol, I'm going to start experimenting with photo backdrops soon though.
Cheers
Luke.
Thank you for all the awesome videos.
Great work!
When I am able. I hope to donate to your meaningful cause!
Spanky
Thanks Spanky, really appreciate your comment 😊 you are helping me by simply watching my videos so thank you again 😊
Nice Vid
Thanks for sharing
Thumbs up
woltar9 thanks again mate, glad you liked it. Cheers, Luke.
You are really intresting pal
Very interesting process. Might use it sometime.
Rob McCrain Thanks Rob, using real dirt can actually come up looking quite good. I think that by applying only a very thin layer with the stocking helps a lot, I tried to apply the dirt using a spoon and the thick areas of dirt don't come out looking as good. Thanks for the comment.
Looking good. Good tips.
olaf99a Thanks Olaf, even though this is a HO scale diorama, this method also works quite well for N scale as well, especially using the stocking to apply the very fine dust. It took me a long time to find a dirt texture for my N scale layout that didn't look over-sized.
You should unite all of your sceneries to make a huge train rail with a working train!
Great video can this be used with 1/24 scale model kits?
I am a rookie in building dioramas, but I want to start building them so that I can bring a spark to my model railroad photographs.. and I would like any advice you can give me.
Use the Force Luke!
😊 one of my favorite movies.... "Back To The Future" is a close second 😊
after your done with the vehicle paths get model rubber tires to make track marks and areas of rut formations
Nice job on this. I like all your videos. I recently purchased a device for static grass based on your video. Some of the products used in this video I haven't heard of. I notice you have an accent, I can't tell where you are from. Are the products you are mentioning not from the United States? For example, the road weathering items you shaved with a knife. Is that clay?
Also, I really liked those pine trees and I'm nervous purchasing the ones I have seen on E-Bay from China. My layout is primarily going to be pine trees as I like the mountainous look it provides. I also have painted my backdrops in this manner as well. Do you recall who you bought the pine trees from in China? Is there a site link or something along those lines? I know it has been a year since you made the video so, I understand if you do not.
Again, I really like the way you do the videos, and I have committed myself to stepping up my operations so the scenery is as good as yours.
Thanks Again...Juls
+Burlington Troop Hi mate, I'm from Australia and all the products are either local or ordered from the US, UK or China. It has been ages but good thing eBay has a purchase history :) Here is the seller and the same product I purchased from:
www.ebay.com.au/itm/SZ110-40pcs-Model-Train-Pine-Trees-HO-OO-Gauge-110mm-/270751039863?hash=item3f0a050177:m:mFGi3yyJCKkg62kD31L8MIQ
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and I'm sure you will be able to make some great scenery. The trees will definitely help, I sprayed mine with spray can glue and sprinkled some Woodland Scenics Fine Turf 'Weeds' over the top to add a bit of texture.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Luke.
What a stupid question, this scene is 100% real.
Either that or the guy in the car at the beginning was Lego size
😂😂😂😂😂
Where did you get the flatbed truck? I love it and cannot find a model flatbed truck online like this.
que buenos videos
You should try sanding on the edges of the sculpt a mold
What do you think of those harbor freight clamping work benches? Are they built tough enough to do the job?
+Nerfball6 lol! They do the job for holding my model railroad dioramas... Mine didn't take long to brake when I actually used it to cut wood and clamp stuff, it's ok for light work but I think if I was going to buy another one I'd spend a little more money and get a better quality one!
Cheers
Luke
Thanks for getting back to me!
Great vid mate
girugameshica Cheers, Glad you liked it. Luke
I have a question Luke, when using grout, which is better, sanded or non sanded?
By the way, love your videos, very informative.
I think non sanded is better :) Sometimes the sand they add can be a little course.
Cheers
Luke
I love this intro..
Thank you for sharing.
Sue Line RailRoad no worries, thanks for watching. Cheers,
Luke.
There's one thing wrong with the video, it says, "amateur modeller!" I would have to say you're far beyond amateur! Great video and very informative. Thank you for the tips!
lol, I have slowly improved over time 😃 thanks for the compliment mate
Great tips..!
***** Thanks mate, glad you like it.Cheers, Luke.
Lots of YT videos have corny editing with people stuck into static images. Yours are pretty corny, too, but with one big difference: yours are well done and entertaining!
lol, you're not wrong..... they are super corny! here's my latest corny video you might enjoy :)
ruclips.net/video/0_guMOYoCpw/видео.html
Where can I find the materials for stuff like this? Also I'd like to make a city model. Any tips is appreciated.
thanks Luke
***** No worries mate.
Cheers
Luke.
Awesome.
thanks Val
Very nice videos! Whats the name of your intro music? :-)
Darude, Sandstorm
Its not Sandstorm @@mattadams5775
The Sandalwood grout, or any color grout is very hard to come by over here.. Is it meant for colour only or does it serve a secondary function?
If it's for colour alone, i think i can get away with mixing different kinds of sand and/or clay?
it's mostly for color, you can even mix in tempera paint powders to get the desired color. Hope that helps 😀
I was wondering about how you do your static grass. I've seen people put down a layer of fine ground foams in different greens, and then do static grass on top. But it seems like yours goes straight one the dirt layer. Do you feel that is necessary? It looks like its dense enough that I wouldn't need it.
Looking forward to your input.
+germannscale I guess it doesn't really matter too much, if you want thin layer of static grass it might be a good idea to put ground foam down first. I haven't had any issues with laying the static grass straight on the dirt and I kind of like that the dirt shows through a little bit in the thin areas of static grass.
I usually lay the grass first and then sprinkle over ta small amount of ground foam to blend the grass in with the rest of the scenery.
It's definitely worth trying both methods though and it might also look good to use both styles on the same model to give some variety.
Hope that helps a little.
Cheers
Luke.
+Luke Towan Thanks! I guess I'll have to try both. And its probably a good idea to do both for some variety
which rail tracks should i buy for my model. its a city model.
6+ years on this looks almost amateur compared to the new pojects on the channel. yet it is still on another level...
nice job
+william jones Thanks :)
Cool
+Kellie Foy Thanks :)
Cheers
Luke.
Wow 😎
Thank you 😀
Luke where do you get your spray bottles? Do you recommend a certain type? I can't seem to get ones that spray more 6 pumps before clogging.
That particular spray bottle was from a art supply store, it was a while ago now but it was called a fine mist bottle. I've found very similar mist bottles at cosmetics stores as well which I often use, cheap ones are better because as you mentioned it doesn't take long for them to clog up! After I finish spraying glue I will spray a small amount of alcohol through the spray bottle to clean it out. Doing that usually gets me about 3 to for months of use out of the bottle (Depending on how often I use it)
Hope that helps 😀
Luke Towan thank you.
do you need foam on top of plywood to add the grass and stuff?
JalvaroStudios gaming and Pvp Hey mate, you don't need foam or anything really. The foam is good to mold and shape hills but if you modelling a flat area you can apply the scenery straight onto the plywood. On my website you will be able to see an example of a diorama I made that is scenery applied directly onto the plywood, I used the diorama for the "Billboard", "Chain link fence" and "Light pole with CCTV".
www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/gallery.html
Hope that helps with your modelling.
Cheers
Luke.
thanks so much my table is 92x48 so im buying 2 48x28 and my life goal will be completed
Hey Luke, thanks for all your hard work and sharing! Either you have an understanding Mrs, or you're filming without her knowing you're using sieves from the kitchen and her stockings! Mate, you're playing with your life!!! Thanks again though..nice work!
ha ha ha... yeah I'm always careful when I go hunting for tools in the kitchen! She is very understanding and doesn't get too angry when I return the kitchen utensils covered in dirt, plaster and glue!
Cheers
Luke
Just out of interest do you use remote controlled trains or static trains?
+Yakpackin Flys I'm using remote controlled trains, they are powered through the rails. Most of them are DCC powered.
Cheers
Luke
Hi Luke. Do you have a link of where you got the trees from. Thanks.
Matthew Baldwin Yeah no worries, I bought them through ebay here: www.ebay.com.au/itm/SZ110-40pcs-Model-Train-Pine-Trees-HO-OO-Gauge-110mm-/270751039863?hash=item3f0a050177&_uhb=1
Hope that helps.
Cheers, Luke.
I already retired making diorama due to health problem,i wish i can back to action
awesome vids dude. BUT! Wet water :D :P
lol, yeah I get that a lot 😊
Liked
Make a short film about your dioramas and locomotives
Hi Luke! how do you do the mini video? do you have a video tutorial?
No, I just watched some other RUclips tutorials a while ago and gradually learnt that way.
where do you store all this stuff. equipment + scenery's you build?
I have a couple of large shelves in the garage although they are getting quite full... I might need to buy another one soon!
Luke Towan thats quite clever. I wonder if there is any model mouseoums in the world? I have seen that some people do home mouseoums by turning garage into one.
Luke Towan go sell them xD
I have watched all your videos more than twice. Hey, would happen to have, or can you make a video weathering N scale Kato track?
My coffee table layout is all Kato and is my first attempt at using Kato n scale track. I have viewed other videos on RUclips about this subject.
I would highly value your opinion.
If you do not have Kato n scale track I can priority mail you a few pieces.
Spanky
I have a small amount of N scale stuff, I have an old British N scale layout. I'm not building a new N scale layout at the moment but it's something I'll be working on in the future 😊 Just might be a little while from now that's all...
Excellent. Thank you!
where do u buy your foam base or what should I search up
The foam I use is called Knauf Insulation Foam Board from Bunnings in Australia.
do you seal on the powder pastels at the end of the video?
No i didn't but you can seal them with dull coat or something similar if you want. I've found that as long as you don't constantly touch or rub in the area where the pastel is then it will stay there forever. I even vacuum the model to clean it and it doesn't seem to effect the pastel.
Cheers
Luke
where buy fine turf? buy in internet? i from poland please answer
where in Australia are you from?
Great stuff, Luke, very inspiring. Just one wee correction, if I may: the correct spelling of "amature" is "amateur."
What does the alcohol do? Any specific type?
North Central Lines On30 Hi, thanks for the question, the alcohol helps the glue absorb into the scenery, it breaks the surface tension of the water/glue mixture and allows the glue to soak into the scenery. Without the alcohol, the water/glue mixture would not absorb into the scenery as well. The glue will end up drying to the top layer only, as a result the bottom layer wont actually be glued down and the scenery may end up peeling away over time. "Wet water" (water mixed with washing detergent) also does a great job of breaking the waters surface tension.
The alcohol I used was isopropyl alcohol, more commonly know as rubbing alcohol. It contains 64% alcohol and the rest is water. I have also used a brand that states 100% alcohol, it works much better however is a lot more expensive! So the higher alcohol to water ratio, the better.
I actually used a brand that contains a fragrance, it seemed to work just as well as the non fragrant types and now I have a nice smelling diorama! It seems to be holding strong thus far.
The thumbnail looks like it's straight from a truck driving simulator
Do xou drive with the train ?
Luke in your introduction you call yourself amateur, don't under value yourself, you are a very talented modeller.
if you wet the foam it will work better
