- Adam Faith - ' What Do You Want' - Stereo 1959
This is the second attempt at syncing these two recordings together.
This version of Adam Faith's 1959 No 1 hit is a bit of a hybrid, let me explain, the recording had a instrumental backing by John Barry and as far as I am aware was only ever released in Mono, although DES versions do exist. In 1960 Bobby Vee recorded a cover version of 'What do you want' which didn't do very well in the UK but did have a stereo accompaniment that was exactly the same arrangement as John Barry's, now to my ears both versions sound identical, apart from some lack of reverberation and a slight speed increase on the Vee recording.
Anyway what I have done is to take the two recordings into Melodyne (Note based audio editing) and there is a definite improvement over my first attempt.
David, this is perfect compared to your first attempt. Sounds great!
You're getting good at this !
Great job David. Just one small point about your narrative,. Liberty releases in the UK were on the London label, (Decca) until 1962 when it transferred to EMI. The master tape of Bobby Vee's version with several takes still exists. It was split session on 6/1/1960 with singer Johnny Burnette, Using the same backing musicians Burnette recorded "Dreamin'' and " Cincinnati Fireball". As soon as he heard them Bobby knew who would be having a massive hit and who would not.
Thanks John for the info, much appreciated, I will amend the details shortly.
I believe it was Johnny Worth aka Les VanDyke, the writer, who suggested that Adam sang BAYBEE that way ..
