    I worked on this engine. It was similar to cruise missile engines and had kind of a short life but was perfect to prove this small jet concept. Loved working on these engines. It's nice to enjoy the kind of work you do.

    I’d like to see this entire genre of twin jet revisited with today’s tech. It’d be interesting to see how much performance could be squeezed out of it while retaining the forgiving and tame manners of the Mustang and Phenom 100, combined with Garmin’s avionics of course.
    I suspect, with performance-minded compromises made, a relatively inexpensive “Ferrari for the sky” would have an abysmal safety record. A plane like the CMC will always be a “pilots airplane” unsuitable for most pilots lacking significant time in very high performance jets... for those capable we already have the Premier, Phenom 300 and CJ4. For an idea of the workload see Premier1Driver’s youtube channel.

    This was a truly unique jet with a smart approach...make it small, which in turn makes it lightweight, which in turn allows smaller engines to be used, which in turn means that you can go just as fast as the larger jets for less money! I think this is a perfect example of why smaller is better!

    One of the great things RUclips is the opportunity to see airplanes that didn't make it to market but were absolutely great aircraft, like this one. The criticism about the planes aerodynamics or exaggerated performance figures is unfounded. The futuristic Piaggio Avanti has a lifting fuselage and so does this one, even if square instead of round. Like in the Avanti, this has a big effect on efficiency, speed and range. The test pilot report was accurate and not just merchandising. As much as I love aviation, anyone well informed about it knows that some of the very best aircraft don't make it to market for unfortunate and, sometimes, the dumbest of reasons.

    • @granskare
      @granskare 8 лет назад +5

      I saw an airplane like the Avanti land at the airport at Davenport, Iowa as I was driving home....I went over to look at it....I wish I had a camera with me...it seems the FAA guys were not ready for composites so they wanted more and more metal until the promise of the airplane could not occur...and now composites are al the rage....

    • @fatatomicsausage
      @fatatomicsausage 7 лет назад

      don't think the Avanti has a lifting fuselage. it has triple lifting surfaces, the fore plane (debatable whether to call it a canard) and wings and the horizontal stab are all lifting surfaces. This in itself is unusual!

    • @fatatomicsausage
      @fatatomicsausage 7 лет назад

    Huh, some interesting Shenanigans with the commenting system. I was going to respond to a few but perhaps They'll eventually be seen if I answer like this.
    RB747domme and The Hellish Frog might be surprised to find that the aerodynamics are better than they think. Coincidentally whilst I was at the RAeS on Friday the Aircraft Research Association's stand had a CFD image of the leopard on it's banner, some fairly nice looking flows there.
    Dave M needs to consider that whilst the Comet I may have taught the aircraft industry a lot in the early years we are talking about entirely different materials here. The Comet I used extremely thin aluminium skins (considerably thinner than modern aircraft) The Leopard is almost all composite, this responds to fatigue cycling in a different way. The aircraft in the video is also a pre-production prototype.
    ROCKSTARCRANE, yes the wing is a long way back, however the engines sit nearly on the tail, and these are a fairly significant arm. Then there's the flying surfaces, also pretty weighty control systems there. The fueltanks are almost between the engines with the baggage bay above. The worm screws and motors for the flaps/spoilers are also behind the wing. The second row of seats probably sits pretty much on or very near the CG (for stability reasons with/without 3 pax)
    Alan Caldoza I'm afraid you'll find that the aerofoil is an ARA designed super-critical section not a NACA section. You're probably right however that high lift devices would be useful. However, the weight tradeoffs must be examined!

    Questions:
    1. How many firm orders with 10% paid in advance were present? Important for investors.

    I believe it was mainly due to a lack of interest in the project from investors. There was also an issue with engine supply, the 001 aircraft had Noel Penny engines and 002 was meant to have more powerful versions of the same. When Noel Penny went under the engines were changed to Williams FJX-1 engines. There was, apparently, a deal done by Williams to supply the FJX engine to only one company sometime later, since that company wasn't CMC they once again didn't have any engines.

    With such a small internal volume and huge window area, it couldn't be decently pressurized without significant risk of explosive decompression should a window panel break. Because if this it would only be safe to fly at modest differential pressures with oxygen masks at higher altitudes. Also the car-style "a-column", with the very pronounced change of direction from windshield to side window can't be good for aerodynamics, there must be a ton of separation going on there (not great for the engine intakes either). With all the useful load ahead of the wings it must rely on heavy trimming (with associated trim drag) to adjust for CG excursion with varying loads. The airplane had good looks, seemed like a car of the future, but it doesn't surprise me that it didn't go forward.

One of the prototypes (now painted red) is displayed at a roundabout in Bournemouth each year during the Bournemouth Air Festival - an annual reminder of what could have been. The Sport Jet II is a modern contender from the USA, but it is single engine, and does not have the speed, range or ceiling of the Leopard.

    Lovely aeroplane. To bad it didn't make it in the marketplace. It seems that thing are moving in that direction. Maybe he was ahead of his time ?

    As for the power plant, why not look at any American manufacturer like that of the BD-10 or a bigger one installed to that famous James Bond jet. Rutan aircraft don't seem to have engine availability problem in their homeland coz the US have vast arsenal of jet engines.

    Looks like the takeoff and landing speeds are really fast. I didn't see any flaps to help it slow down a bit. And no airbrakes/spoilers on touchdown to put more weight on the runway. Seems like that plane was only good for very good, experienced pilots.

    • @DaBoligBurls

      You can't see it clearly in this video but the entire wing aft of the 3/4 chord line is actually a moving flap that goes from +45 degrees as a spoiler to -45 degrees as a flap, all the roll and pitch control is from the tailerons. I don't know how it functioned exactly but I assume that the pilot would have been able to pre-arm spoilers and when the weight on wheels switch activated it would flip from flaps to spoilers on landing.

      +jay lehman CMC was never a big company, they only ever had a couple of small buildings. These clips were filmed in the early 1990 in the quality of hand held cameras of the time, unfortunately while the originals may be able to be digitised in better quality with the death of Mr. Chichester-Miles a few years back the opportunity is probably lost.

    Seems like a good airplane for training pilots to fly jets instead of using piston single engine aircraft and has two engines in case of engine failure would be much safer.
