I agree with a lot of the others in these comments, I've been playing my shaft off with this game and I find it to be one of the best action rpg's in a while. The story is pretty interesting, dialogues definitely cheesy at times, but the collectibles are fun, the combat is SICK, Movement is sick, fast run, mounts, visuals are beautiful, and the music is awesome as well. I’m yet to play it, will be picking it up tomorrow as I’m in NZ. But a point that most reviewers have stated is that the early game combat can come across as slow but once it opens up it’s one of the greatest arpg combat systems around. Due to that I don’t think the demo shows that part off well but it wouldn’t make sense to throw you into the middle with an abundance of systems to learn instantly.
I played the demo as well, and it felt just hollow. The 5 fits what I experienced in the demo. That the whole game is like that is kinda heart breaking.
@@kaynewoolley9104 People said that about the demo as well. I'm fairly certain that it's people that didn't try to use other characters and the customization options in the demo; some of the options available definitely were fast-paced. Personally I played the demo with kareena as a dancer most of the time and it was everything but slow. Thing is, the MC, which most people will I guess use intuitively, is a tank... Regarding the early game itself (in the full game) it doesn't strike me as particularly slow even with Val; in fact even less so than Val in the demo strangely enough.
@@vic137 I never said he was wrong, what? He sounded very negative his tone doesn’t sound he enjoyed or wanted to review the game. I’m not elaborating anything because I didn’t say he was wrong.
As a starting point I'd like to say I respect the score it gets, I will still buy and play the game and I expect I will enjoy it aswell. What I don't like about the review is the negative tone the entire review has attached to it feels like a reviewer got handed a game he really didnt wanna play at all and did it just to review it doesnt seem like a good combination. Because even if the game has some bad things I'm sure it has I did play the demo after all there are some upsides aswell but it felt like the reviewer focused mainly on the bad. And something I always find hillarious in these reviews that doesnt get a good score is they often focus alot of energy on gameplay and bugs while for games that get good or even great reviews they close their eyes and barely mention them even though some games was absolutly crawling with them at launch. There are games that has gotten 10s with tons of bugs with no mention of them in the reviews.
This is the only reviewer that gave it such a low score tbh even IGN gave it an 8 and they are usually giving JRPGS pretty mid scores in general. I don’t feel like the person who reviewed this actually plays JRPGS in general let alone someone familiar with the mana series.
This is a game that I want to play regardless what the reviewer said. The art style is so colourful and gorgeous. I'd rather play this than most Western games. I feel like the reviewer and Western gaming industry is jaded and doesn't understand gaming anymore. Even Black myth wukong & stellar blade, I would buy less than the interest I have for this game. Japan has this ability to create fantastical worlds that stimulate our imagination with positivity like no other country. This is what I love about Japanese games. Reminds me of the vibe of Spyro or Zelda.
The problem with poeple and review is that poeple who came here are the one who love the game not the way around and they get angry if there game get low score and start hating on the reviewer . to me this game look identical to trail of mana that was released couple of years ago so if you like that you will like this to as for me i hated the game everything about it was bad and i hate that square enix are releasing mutiple low quality rpg game . the movement look stiff and the combat look so bad the exploration look so bad also due to the maps being liener . the story is so uninteresting and the cinematic quality is also bad . but even than i dont go to some one who enjoy the game and insult him of his taste . because taste is subjective
@@ceirwanYou can still be a fan of a series and be very critical. Just personally hearing this guy I don’t think he is a fan of JRPGS in general let alone the mana series. None of their games are a 10/10 but I don’t think it’s near as bad as the reviewer is claiming 🤷
Same guy who gave a low score to Granblue Fantasy. Hard to take them seriously when they're so far off from the general consensus. As an avid JRPG fan, I can say I am absolutely loving the game so far, and the post-game looks amazing considering all the customization options!
That's your nostalgia talking. SD3 and SoM are possibly my favorite ones, period, and it is a lot like it; if you know why you like the mana serie (its atmosphere, the contrast between the cute design and harsh themes, Kikuta, etc) and not just because it is a "childhood game". Visions actually surprised me in that regard, it feels more like a mana game than I thought it'd be; which also explains why it's not the same market and public as, say, FF7R. Compared to the mess that was SD4, this is a masterpiece (then again, a LOT of things are masterpieces compared to SD4....) Although strictly speaking, I'd say that Vision's atmosphere is somewhat closer to SD3 than to SoM. But it fits with both.
I feel the same way after trying the demo. It's OK, but secret of mana was amazing. I'll definitely buy it as some point, but probably wait for a sale.
Invisible walls in a free roam area are soooo immersion shattering. Going through the same with Atlas Fallen currently. It's an automatic point taken off a game for me.
The same goes with Black Myth: Wukong although not open world some sections are very open and constantly thinking you can go somewhere just to hit an invisible barrier breaks immersion immediately.
The issue is Japanese games are like this. And you just have to accept it. When I turned on DQ 11, i was like holy linear path Batman! But if I let that deter me, I would have missed out on one of the best games I’ve ever played. At least they have jump buttons!
@@eradicatedpulse6896 in wukong it think its even worse, because the world looks so good, that you think every few minutes, "oh cool i could go there" just to realize, nope, its again an invisible wall. The game is great in other aspects but this is its big downside!
@@eradicatedpulse6896well yeah it’s a linear game and a boss rush game at that. Most Japanese games are like this with very few exceptions. I really don’t find invisible walls in these games immersion shattering because they aren’t open world so I kinda expect it.
I'm used to invisible walls or at least obvious roadblocks like shrubs blocking the path. As long as I have a map telling me where I can and can't go, I'm set. Though BM: Wukong doesn't have a map so I saw not how immersion shattering that was, but how easy it was to get lost.
You all are just malding because Square gave the publicity contract to IGN and you could only get the Blizzard one. Thought we wouldnt notice. Awful review btw.
He did not play the game...he says that no one in the world cares about people sacraficing them selfs and the story never deviates. The first 5 seconds is about people running away from sacraficing themselfs
"WaSN't tHis ThE sAMe pEop-" shut up. How do you guys still not get that big outlets like Gamespot and IGN have different reviewers who review different games and have drastically different opinions? Instead of relying on every review to be synonymous, why don't you do your homework and check who actually wrote the thing. Also, if you want to criticize a review, then you should actually play the game being reviewed. If you haven't then your opinion is worthless.
I have to agree the limited movement in settlements is stupendously absurd, story falls flat midway and the look of Val, Morley and especially Julei is absolutely ridiculous in either which outfit
Some valid points are made in this video. It is too easy to just look at the grade and say it is unfair compared to other reviews that rate the game much higher. I honestly don't think a lot of the issues are break points for me anyway and a lot of things can be fixed through patches. Things like bugs are usually fixed in a day one patch that probably wasn't available yet for review. I'm looking forward to mess around with the classes and weapons. Most reviewers really enjoy this part of the game. I really hope they fix double jump in towns, that is a very weird design choice, makes no sense and seems so easy to allow full movement in towns.
It seems weird to me to critique the double jump/air dash in towns thing. You can sprint and jump, everything is within reach. Towns have quests, shops, grizzly syrup and chests. Double jump air dash is for open areas and dungeons. I'm just glad they gave us a mount straight up in the first big area.
@@Highwind452 It is a minor annoyance, nothing game breaking. You do have some items on roofs which become very frustrating to collect in towns because suddenly you need precise timing to get on a roof. It just feels so unnecessary, why disable it in towns? One of my biggest annoyances with the FF7 remakes is the excruciating slow walking during a lot a character interactions. Or those cinematic crawls, just do a cutscene if you don't want players to run around... (also about FF7 remake). That bothered me a lot more than all those things mentioned about this game in the review. The only thing I agree with is the story and (most of) the characters. I only like Val and Morley, Julei is just entertaining. You also get some very weird drops in pace that could easily been avoided with some better streamlining. Like the massive backtracking later in the game and some random character moments way too late in the story. But no, not being able to double jump in towns did not ruin the game for me. It is not even worth a point reduction for a review if you ask me. I only need to do the black rabbit boss and aeva zahala (on hard) for my platinum trophy so I'm definitely enjoying the game. I think it is a lot of fun, but nothing really outstanding. I'd say the average grade of a 7.5 on metacritic is about right. I do feel like that it had more potential as minor improvements could have had a big impact on the game. A bit better streamlining a bit better gameplay pacing. I'm now in the end game and the battle system is only now reaching it's full potential after maxing more than one elemental plot and it's kind of sad that a lot of player will probably never actually see how great the battle system is when you get to mix multiple classes and the late game ability seeds.
If you approach this game like a throwback ps1/ps2 era jrpg brought to modern times, it’s easily at least an 8. And btw play on hard since it’s basically old school normal and game’s better with it.
Modern game urinals are out of touch with gamers. I wouldn't take it to heart, they're fading out of relevancy fast. As you can see, they're completely useless.
i thought of buying it, but if the game is so bad.... i do not know which other games i could. I just want to conter the weight of my other dark games with a more happy and chill ones like this.
The man who reviewed it knows his games. I myself, played the demo for 5 minutes, yelled YEP!, and uninstalled it and preordered immediately. I expect to enjoy it
This is the way all mana games are. The original snes games had an enemy glitch that made it require finesse related to attack timing and how the attack would land and you had to understand the game engine and work around it. Still was awesome. THEY NEED COUCH CO-OP DONE RIGHT FOR DLC. Yeah. i said it.
Despite some issues like the invisible walls the demo sold me. I appreciate this negative review for a different pov but generally feels like this dude just didn't want to review this specific game lol
Sure, dude sounds like he didn't like the game, but maybe that's because he didn't like it? Just because the game wasn't his cup of tea doesn't mean YOU won't like the game. There's an 11 minute video where he explains his perspective in great detail so you can take his criticisms and decide if those things are issues for you or not. That's the whole point of a review; to give you a subjective opinion to help you make a more informed decision on spending your money/time/effort on something. Everyone complains about reviewers being "paid shills" but really, ya'll just want to be the ones paying so the reviewer agrees with you😂.
This is barely a review, its more of a bitter rant about the game, the tone is so pretentious and blunt even terrible games can produce good reviews instead of sounding like the reviewer is cursing your entire bloodline.
Yeah but this isn’t some random dude with a you tube channel giving his opinion on a game. This a channel that professionally reviews games. They need to review it objectively and try to leave personal biases out of it, because it needs to be useful to everyone not just him and people like him. If this was his own channel, then fine. People who subscribe to him know what to expect and if you don’t like what he likes, then you just won’t watch him. But a professional review channel needs to not make the review about the reviewer.
This guy's braindead."I accidentally ran from fights a few times and came back the mobs had full hp." like are you serious? You have to seriously not be paying attention cause it takes a good 3 seconds for you to run from a fight while running into an invisible wall. Also game too hard=bad for this guy. What a real gamer. This is why beginner mode exists.I give this review a -1/10.
the story is a mana tale through and through with some modern twists. odd that some of the surprising story elements didn’t resonate with this player. i feel like the game was created for fans of the series. lots of call backs to characters and npc’s from older games makes it a joy to experience. it’s not for everyone, sure, but it’s far from a bad game. “hundreds of RPGs better than this” was a fascinating way to end the script. unfortunate review.
Arise is great I love trails and secret of mana and I'm hearing good things about it but I'd say get Arise since you can probably find it super cheap and hopefully after you're done with that there's a discount on this game
The game is beautiful, there are hints about where the missions are, like ninja Gaiden 2 on the Nintendo Switch, the problem is that the open world, the desire to explore everything and secondary missions or many together is good, but at first they can be left behind by We don't know which one to do first and then this mission may disappear, but it's cool, it's beautiful, I'll play it. I prefer the legend of mana style if the characters were drawn by hand, like the scenery with a larger size to show the details and with fluidity like a cartoon street of rage 4 would be better, a version with a wu Kong from oriental legends 2 igs pgm2 or Goku from saiyuki ps 1 with kusarigama as a ninja weapon Gaiden 2 from nintendo switch or urumi tungar from indivisible half wizard monk pirate samurai enchanter morpher, Sierra with spear or and haladie a lupine valkiria cleric, an archer Gilbert or another character a grasshopper perhaps , Shiloh with sword gladiator swordsman, Nicollo or a birdman with daggers or fists, or daena with daggers or fists, escad and his sword, the birdman or Nicollo with axe, Serafina with sledgehammer fists or knives, elazul same style red mage musketeer fencer, larc the hellhound now with two swords and shields the magical warrior half knight and samurai and pearl maga with a staff I think it would look great, in the same style as the legend of mana on the ps1 with the improvements made, in a traditional RPG or tactics, in the styles valkirye profile and indivisible, blooddstained The cursed of The moon 2, action adventure like herc's adventure Beyond oasis avatar The burning earth online multiplayer and beat em up, or a remake with additions of two or three more playable characters, perhaps more phases and changes just in the characters' graphics, I think it would be a cooler remake version and boomerang as a weapon in the game's inventory too, but it's very beautiful, yes, I play Thiago da Silva Lisboa, new animes, ovas and mangas from the mana series are welcome also. Cheers for the review. This is so disappointing to see. Have to say, it was not great to hear it was to be yet another single player game. Secret of Mana and Mana 2 were multi player that existed approximately 30 years ago. They clearly dropped that to reduce development as it was too challenging. They should have made the effort bring that back and put better empasis on battles and character development.
So, find another reviewer, this is by far the outlier score wise and seems like the guy was just playing to review rather than reviewing a game he fully played.
I going to buy and play it just because I'm a mana fan but it will have a rough going net ease is already closing this studio so it doomed just from that but also from the demo I couldn't shake the mobile game vibes I got also I think it's kinda of a cash grab considering they announced closing the studio the day it released you can not trust the Chinese 😅
In the comments there are many people saying that he is the wrong guy to review that game? But why? (serious question, maybe i dont get why hes the wrong guy) You dont have to be an absolute fan of a game series to do a review of a new game. Sure it helps to understand the fan-audience of the mana series and what they want in a new game of that series, but its not mandatory i would think. I will test the game when its on sale. The demo was okay, but i have other games to finish first.
I think it helps to come in with a good attitude. Maybe it's just his eccentric personally.. But, the guy sounded tired and uninterested from the get-go. It's fine to dislike a game, but if you hire someone to review a game for a series/genre they don't have much experience in or interest in then the review itself won't be taken seriously. Because lets be honest, the only people who are looking at a game to buy it are people interested in the genre or series. Doesn't make much sense to release a public review video for a game about football if the person giving the review has never played them or doesn't enjoy playing them (Doesn't apply here, just an example.). Besides when majority of the comments are saying the exact same thing about GameSpot, then there isn't much to defend.

Regarding the early game itself (in the full game) it doesn't strike me as particularly slow even with Val; in fact even less so than Val in the demo strangely enough.
This dude clearly was just going through this just to review it
If you elaborate more or if you have a counter point it would be really helpful. Like why is he wrong on the points he mentioned
@@vic137 I never said he was wrong, what? He sounded very negative his tone doesn’t sound he enjoyed or wanted to review the game. I’m not elaborating anything because I didn’t say he was wrong.
@@1kbmahandid you watch the video? He points out all the things why he didn't enjoy it.
@@1kbmahanI too sound negative on games with problems or which didn’t engage me enough 🤷♂️
@@1kbmahanyeah he was very negative because he didnt like the game. And of course his tone wasn't positive
He's definitely not a fan of the series like he claims to be at the beginning of the review.
This is the only reviewer that gave it such a low score tbh even IGN gave it an 8 and they are usually giving JRPGS pretty mid scores in general.
I don’t feel like the person who reviewed this actually plays JRPGS in general let alone someone familiar with the mana series.
@@radagonsoreseal3457 totally agree with this.
Funny. Watching this salty review actually made me want to buy the game to support it.
Game is beautiful. Controls are good. Its fun. Colorful. Memorable characters. Amazing classes. A tremendous achievement
The problem with poeple and review is that poeple who came here are the one who love the game not the way around and they get angry if there game get low score and start hating on the reviewer . to me this game look identical to trail of mana that was released couple of years ago so if you like that you will like this to
as for me i hated the game everything about it was bad and i hate that square enix are releasing mutiple low quality rpg game . the movement look stiff and the combat look so bad the exploration look so bad also due to the maps being liener . the story is so uninteresting and the cinematic quality is also bad .
but even than i dont go to some one who enjoy the game and insult him of his taste . because taste is subjective
Wow, they really got the wrong guy for this. 😅

You're right. Reviewers should be fans of the series that will ignore any downsides and give a positive review no matter what.
@@ceirwanYou can still be a fan of a series and be very critical. Just personally hearing this guy I don’t think he is a fan of JRPGS in general let alone the mana series.

Same guy who gave a low score to Granblue Fantasy. Hard to take them seriously when they're so far off from the general consensus. As an avid JRPG fan, I can say I am absolutely loving the game so far, and the post-game looks amazing considering all the customization options!

Secrets of Mana is one of my favourite games ever, but this doesn't seem to have that same magic
Compared to the mess that was SD4, this is a masterpiece (then again, a LOT of things are masterpieces compared to SD4....)
Although strictly speaking, I'd say that Vision's atmosphere is somewhat closer to SD3 than to SoM. But it fits with both.
Nah dude, this reviewer is dumb. If you want a new mana game, you should totally give this one a shot. It definitely has the same magic.
I feel the same way after trying the demo. It's OK, but secret of mana was amazing. I'll definitely buy it as some point, but probably wait for a sale.
The absolute state of gaming journalism.
Ahhh that explains it. I could tell something felt off. Ty! 😁
He did not play the game...he says that no one in the world cares about people sacraficing them selfs and the story never deviates. The first 5 seconds is about people running away from sacraficing themselfs
My first impression of story was, wait , isn't that the plot of I Am Setsuna?
lol a 5 and ign gave it a 8. Im still getting this game since I loved the demo. The only game reviewers I trust are noisy pixels
they sold out with the outlaws shtill
Ok I’ll pass thank you 😊 I don’t like hard games
You can change the difficulty to Easy or even Beginner at any point in the game.
He should have stated that in the review.
It’s super easy not to mention there’s an easy mode and even one easier than that
Wasn’t this the same people that gave Star Wars outlaws a rave review? Did Ubisoft r pay them more than square?
"WaSN't tHis ThE sAMe pEop-" shut up. How do you guys still not get that big outlets like Gamespot and IGN have different reviewers who review different games and have drastically different opinions? Instead of relying on every review to be synonymous, why don't you do your homework and check who actually wrote the thing.
Also, if you want to criticize a review, then you should actually play the game being reviewed. If you haven't then your opinion is worthless.

Sounds like this guy just doesn't know how to play the game. You have to re-class your character, dude.
Looks like he did go from swordsman to lancer in the video…
Gamespot gives the worst game reviews out there. They’re always the harshest out of all other gaming outlets from what I’ve noticed.

When the former Prime Minister of Pakistan reviews this game himself, YOU BUY IT.
Are you trying to fight IGN for worst gaming skills in a "gaming journalist"?
This guy's braindead."I accidentally ran from fights a few times and came back the mobs had full hp." like are you serious? This is why beginner mode exists.I give this review a -1/10.
the story is a mana tale through and through with some modern twists. odd that some of the surprising story elements didn’t resonate with this player. i feel like the game was created for fans of the series. lots of call backs to characters and npc’s from older games makes it a joy to experience. it’s not for everyone, sure, but it’s far from a bad game. “hundreds of RPGs better than this” was a fascinating way to end the script. unfortunate review.

Hey GameSpot it's 2024, didn't you know you're not allowed to critique a game when you're critiquing it?
In the comments there are many people saying that he is the wrong guy to review that game? But why? (serious question, maybe i dont get why hes the wrong guy)
You dont have to be an absolute fan of a game series to do a review of a new game.
