Love this! I am a native New Yorker and here’s the way to think of it. We treat each other not like strangers but like siblings. So we might not say hi, but you’ll find an abundance of kindness in New Yorkers, that the warm-greeting people of the broader US (and most places I’ve been in Europe) don’t often show

Not from a native NYorker but someone who lived there for almost 15 yrs / totally and wholeheartedly agree / once NY gets into your blood, it will always be a part of you.

As someone that lived there from 2012-2020 can confirm! People are very quick to help a mom carry strollers down a stair or jump in to help if there's a creep on the subway hassling someone. Live in the midwest now and it's different in the way kindness is shown.

In Paris people are mostly rude to foreigners who dont speak their language & dont know the silent cultural etiquette of going about things. If you know the language they usually even compliment you on how good you can speak it & will be very warm & friendly! This was my experience when I visited

I find that weird as a native of New York. I don’t think I ever came across that.

I'm in NYC often but live in Washington,DC. I found Paris more comparable to DC in my opinion. Lots of green space, monuments, free museums and a population with a self important attitude. Also a slower pace when it comes to enjoying meals. NY is a city of in-a-hurry creatives and its energy reflects that vibe. Paris and DC are full of government employees who don't have the same drive to innovate and make something happen

Ive been to both and I’ll take Paris any day!! I have experienced Parisian rudeness but also very nice and kind people as well. New York seems much more volatile and just overall Paris is much more beautiful . Although last year when I was there it seemed like all the buildings could use a bath. I think they’re trying to clean it up before the Olympics and I hope so because if they would just get all the black soot off the buildings it would just sparkle. The last time I was in NYC it was very overwhelming and I agree the subways take so long to come and can change or get cancelled. I don’t understand how people get to work like that. Next time I’m in Paris I would love to go to the nice clubs you describe.

The heating thing was interesting! If you own a house in the US and have to pay for heat, you definitely keep it colder :) oil is so expensive

Hello, New York native here, I just want to say as New York was always expensive, it wasn’t always this expensive. Inflation plays a huge role in those ridiculous grocery prices for one.

Agree w all 100 %. I turned into an adult in NY - arrived there at age 18 and left in early 30s to move to London for professional reasons. But am a born European and grew up in Europe until the age of 18.
First thing you said that struck me that I 100 percent agree with is that NY is not like the broader US - just like London and Paris are not like the rest of the respective countries they belong to. And New Yorkers are an entirely different breed to the rest of the US.
Anyone who has lived and studied and worked in a place like NY will agree that it is one of the most thrilling but also fast paced places to live in. If you are there for 10 plus yrs you v quickly believe that if you esver left it, you’d fall off the face of the earth.
Also 100 percent true that while NY is huge, the individual boroughs feel v small when compared to the likes of London and Paris - Manhattan is infinitely smaller and so many true ‘New Yorkers’ rarely leave the city / both London and Paris are made up of all of the individual quarters and arrondissements, many more green spaces and parks (not sure if same in Paris but def London).
And I dare say that architecturally speaking both London and Paris are ‘prettier’ and, of course, much more historic w their unique style.
But living in NY is an experience I always say everyone should have.
I for one will always be grateful to have had the opportunity to go to university in the US and to then get the first 10 plus yrs of professional experience there. And once NY gets into your blood, it will always be a part of you!

And by the way - just on the topic of buying vegs and the variety thereof - if you haven’t been, you may want to have a look at the Union Square Farmers markets / proper Farmers market w tons of variety
I don’t know now if every day or what select days it’s there and it is down on 14th Street / but it’s worth an experience and I dare say you’ll find a much wider variety than in conventional grocery stores.

Paris is NOT the place to go if you are on a tour and it's rush, rush, rush. I went with a group and had a panic attack and had to have a tres chic female Dr. come to my room to give me a chill pill. Her remarked was "in Paris, we do not rush." Words to live by in any culture.

The lock up kills me! Cause you know ppl were stealing the products and now they have to do that, ruin it for everyone

  • @emilycurtis4398
    @emilycurtis4398 9 месяцев назад +2

The items that are locked up in the grocery store are ones that are often stolen. It can be so embarrassing having to walk around a store to find an employee to unlock baby formula or hygiene products when you just want quickly purchase necessities and leave. There's a bit of a leftist mindset in some groups as a result which is "if you see someone stealing, no you didn't."
The greeting of strangers, I can definitely see that as a street-smart "keep to yourself" attitude in NYC. Other parts of the state can be nicer or have the body language of a polite nod to a stranger but not speaking. (I live in more Upstate and Western NY. NYC is definitely a different culture)
