40s are fine on Rubicon axles, that's how you justify the upgrades to 60's once they break.

40s on stock axles seems like the automotive equivalent of skipping legs day.

That’s why you get aftermarket housings and the best parts available to build those housings and don’t run junk rubi axles 🤷🏻‍♂️

The key that everyone needs to know and understand is that no matter what you run. You are going to break something and you need to be more prepared for the down time then you do for the good time. I wheeled a sport with Dana 35s on 37s. And did fine for a long time. And I now own a gladiator with 44s on 37s. Everyone’s goal is to have an everyday they can take off road, But the key is have the money in the bank and be prepared. Upgrades are 30% of the battle . Maintenance is the rest.

You can run 40s on Dana 44s, as long as you drive it like a grandma off-road.

I want to step up to 40s too. But like you said….. I’m working on beefing up my axles. Truss, gussets, sleeves and chromoly shafts.

I’ve seen heavy jks wheel triple black diamond trails with front 44s and rcvs for years without problems. Basically the rear takes the brunt of the work so as long as you got a 60 rear your fine. HP 44s came factory in one ton trucks back in the 70s with big blocks under the hood too!

None of what you mentioned is the same as running heavy 40+ tires on a locked rig off-road . I'm also curious what 1ton trucks came with d44s the Ford 350 had Dana 60s as early as 77 I have a 79 housing from a one . The f 250 back then used the little d44 as a base axle and if you expected to use it they offered the snow fighter package that upgraded to a d60 .

I don’t think rcv would offer a lifetime warranty on my Dana 44 shafts for breakage up to a 40inch tire if it was going to fail often. I mean if your running stickies or pushing v8 power then I would definitely start with a 60 but built 44s can be stout packages.

I’m sorry man, it’s a bad decision. When I was in MidSouth Jeeps, one of our guys ran 40s on upgraded Dana44s. He wheeled like you and was a weekend warrior. He broke in hawk pride and was a pain to get it back to the trailer parking. As you wheel more, you’re going to learn you’ll need a variety of different wheeling styles and one day you’ll need to push it and it’ll fail. Please be careful!

I’ve beat on these axles a few times with zero issues. It’s also not a factory 44 it’s a Currie Rock Jock 44, RCV shafts, 5.13 gears, ARB air locker, Teraflex ball joints, Reid racing knuckles basically the best you can buy Dana 44 so I’m not worried about it breaking I’m pretty confident in it

I must be doing something wrong with my 08 rubicon with 5:38 gears. I use it almost everyday in the Alberta muskeg off-road, and have 39.5 iroks.
Nothing has broken so far, but it has only been ten year's. I even ran some 38x15.50r 15 for a couple years, without problems. Maybe I need to learn how to break them so I can upgrade. I do have chrome moly axkes and tubes, but that's it.

In Colorado trails are rated 1-10 typical trails that start to require a 40 would be 9 and up ...if you're on a 9 and up trail you're not going to be able soft pedal and crawl everything so unless you like winching you're going to have have the beef to hold the drivetrain together . If you can. Crawl everything then you're running 8 and under and have no use for 40s to begin with and are built for looks .
