i love the way if your a skateboarder its considered un-cool to where a helmet and pads but if your a long boarder its the done and normal thing im glad
This is the most helpful video on coleman slide I've seen so far. Breaking down the slide in slowmotion is much more helpful than showing dry practice and a really quick slide.
This is one of the best tutorials on doing a Coleman. Adjusting the transfer of weight back to the lead foot aids in coming out of the slide to continue on. Great work Dan!!
Make sure all of your movements are smooth. If you go down too fast, that will translate into a spin. Also, be sure to look where you want to go, and maybe go a little faster. Other than that, try to meet up with some local skaters, that's the best way to learn!
Awesome tutorial 6 years later! I didn't realize that folding my foot down would be such an important detail. I'll try that, maybe it'll help me pendulum out further.
Make sure that you're not coming down too fast or trying to push it out too hard. Either of those will give you too much momentum and you end up spinning around.
Check out the first pause in the video before the slide. It's all about doing that stuff slowly and smoothly. Getting low or turning your body too quickly gives you a lot of momentum so you end up just spinning. Also, be sure to have your puck ON the ground before trying to initiate the slide.
I tried this advice about having the puck on the ground before initiating the slide and it works so well for me. I wish someone had told me this earlier. Thanks bro!!
what a great video, i was trying this tonight but i was 'squatting' on the board so couldnt get low enough. now i have the method to try again tomorrow, thanks!
Like your mentioning of the helmet. I fell trying a backside slide and landed on my head and had unfortunately put my board and helmet in the car. Fell and got knocked out. Had a bleed on my brain and needed surgery on it to fix it. Spent like 2-3 weeks in the hospital and 6 months in rehab. Still going to therapy for my legs. Haven't been able to longboard since I fell. Just hoping one day I can get this all behind me and get back on a board
Finally! Someone that rides Goofy! Hazaa! Thankyou mate, so much easier to understand when someone rides the same way as you do, it's a very informative video and i could slide within 2 days of watching this video! cheers mate! Big Help!
great tut! How fast should you be going to make the slide work well? I have Otang in heats and they always want to throw me off the board when Im starting to slide
best vidio i have seen of a Coleman slide i wanna try it out but im just wondering I dont have good like road in the nearest hill would that effect my slide alot or would it go just fine? im a bigginer and i have been on cruches because i fell of my board once (i did not break anything) Thanks for the Video man Keep it up :D
@DeepBlue10055 nice vid! my wheels are sayshun plasma A+ 78a and i cant kick my board hard especially that it is heelside and it is a puckdown slide so how fast should i go?
When learning, try to start at a solid running pace. This should be just around 15 mph. And those wheels are pretty grippy, a board with no flex and good concave will help lock you in. Otherwise, just lean back more to compensate!
Hey man, it's a bit daunting doing it at speed... anything that you could say to help me get over that stuff (fear and all of that) because it's pretty scary!
Focus on keeping your weight on the front foot for the initiation of the slide. In the middle of the slide the weight distribution will be a little more balanced but that comes once your slides start getting a little longer and faster.
Which kind of wheels are you using in this movie? I have a 81a and I'm having a lot of difficulty to do it! I simply don't slide and I'm getting afraid of going faster because I can't stop safely!!
I can't bring the board back in, I can do a 180 perfectly but to get back in my goofy stance I have to switch 180 stand up. How do you do the other part of the pendulum motion and bring it in? Do you kick out your front foot? Do you lift your back leg? I've tried both
One thing he doesn't explain quite well is the weight. How do you balance your weight after the first step of the slide? I got that at some point you only have your weight on the front foot but what happens afterwards?
i have tried this slide and i just cant do it i think is because of the gloves that hold to much and i wanted to know what hlove would you recomend me for doing this slide.
I'm trying to learn how to slide and heard this was a good one to start with. Whenever I try to do this, I get in position, but my board doesn't slide, it just does a really sharp turn on 2 wheels. Any suggestions?
Hi, I just recently learned how to do this slide, I had the same problem as you and I learned that I was simply not going fast enough, also make sure you have most of your weight on your forward foot.
BANANAMAN3620 Hey Banana, your trucks are way too tight dude. If your wheels come off the ground odds are you arent getting enough board lean to trigger the board to break free, though it also sounds like you might need to move your weight more onto your sliding hand and more off your board. Loosen your trucks up, but becareful of wheelbite. Some boards don't have enough clearance to easily generate board lean without the wheels biting on the deck. See if that helps!
MrBrodady Weight on the front foot is absolutely critical. Speed helps too if you know how to commit, it also increases the risk... but hey, you gotta pay to play.
@@belfastmike2250 If you try it you'll see what I mean. They just don't slow you down enough to bring you to a stop unless you're going super slow or you're not on a hill.
Speed helps since it pushes you down into your board the sharper you turn, but definitely consider your flexibility. For most people the issue is hip flexibility, but with a little bit of stretching over a week or two you can improve that a lot. There are tons of good videos here on youtube for hip stretching.
I literally have tried this bc I was told this is the easiest slide to learn for beginners and I can't slide the board like I'm getting down and everything hut it doesn't slide it just turns. am I not going fast enough? am I not kicking the board? it's kinda hard to kick the board when my arm is restricting me from really moving. I want to slide bc I'm scared to go down hills without knowing how to properly stop. plus I wanna show off to my friends that I can go down the hills they're scared to go down simply bc if I need to, I can stop. any suggestions?
Yea go in the turn sharper then Give it a little bit more of a kick mainly takes practice I didn't get it down for a while ether I started thinkin it was my board but I jsr needed practice
Im just learning how to slide and I tried this slide. I did it a few times but then I tried it one more time and the board just stopped mid slide and I went flying forward and split my chin open. Do I need thicker riser pads so I won't get wheel bite? Or what went wrong?
It happened to me but I think its just that I wasn't going fast enough. If you fly forward again just slide on your gloves and keep your face up. Good luck!
Absolutely, if you're not going at least jogging speed it won't work. Anyway, this slide is meant to kill speed, so is most useful when you are going fast and want to stop.
I keep trying and trying but all I do is either turn widely or the board kicks out a little. Could it be that the board is too long or my wheels are terrible?(they are bad wheels)
Harrison Leishman i do have the mini zombies hawgs yellow(82a) and i always come from slow slides and it struggles.do i need to breka it in?if so for how long?
I learned to slide with longisland wheels: Those were BAD. Wheels won't make you magically learn how to slide: Just try to go a little over your confort speed, then get confortable, then go a little bit faster etc... At some point your wheels will start sliding ;)
i love the way if your a skateboarder its considered un-cool to where a helmet and pads but if your a long boarder its the done and normal thing im glad
theduckster1804 thats what i really like about the longboarding community, no judgement and even the professional videos are stressing safety gear
You get fun of for not wearing a helmet, and not the other way around.

Yeah and if you don’t wear a helmet they often won’t allow you in groups, the longboarding community is way better then skateboarding community

as lose as you are comfortable with. More turn = easier slide

really comprehensive for someone learning to slide well done!
I feel you man. I hit a guardrail a month and a half ago and I'm a long way from 100%. Hope we can both get back on a board soon.

What are some good slide gloves that are around $50 for a guy just learning to slide?
haha yup. There's no other takeover like that but I'm buddies with Comet guys so it's easier for me to get a hold of unique stuff from the factory.

thanx for the video, it really helps! one question: should i put weight on the toes or heels of my front foot, or just evenly distributed?
ok, so even if i cant kick my board i just puck down and sway my upper body to the direction i want to go? and put some pressure on back foot.
can you do this without putting your hand down? I usually dont ride with gloves. Can you do like a standup slide and how would you do it?
Not likely. Gloves are really useful for sliding. Standup slides are fun but as with all things take practice.
GET. THE. GLOVES. Believe me. They'll make your life a lot easier.
Daniel do you do pressure on the front and back foot or just the front foot or the back foot or no pressure at all?
Focus on keeping your weight on the front foot for the initiation of the slide. In the middle of the slide the weight distribution will be a little more balanced but that comes once your slides start getting a little longer and faster.
Ok my slide works perfectly now thanks. Now to practice it without grabbing the board :)

ok ill try both, i dont think i can shorten the base too much.
After doing a colman slide i am at the 180 and i cant bring the board back to my original stance while keeping the slide going, how do i do that?
Did you place your whole left foot on the board,( the one that is not bent)?
I can't bring the board back in, I can do a 180 perfectly but to get back in my goofy stance I have to switch 180 stand up. How do you do the other part of the pendulum motion and bring it in? Do you kick out your front foot? Do you lift your back leg? I've tried both

It's something that comes with practice, but go faster! More speed gives you more slide time to work with.
Well illustrated...

The faster the better, the first attempts I did were at a snail pace just going down my street and I fell so many times

i go really fast and look forward like u say to do and i end up doing a 180 help please thanks !!!
If you could do a 'goofy'/left-handed version I'd appreciate it!
Hahaha Learned to do it with both already. I think all you standard riders are just as crazy as you probably think us goofy riders are.
+Alex Sarglepp if youre on a tutorial video you probably didnt know how to slide regularly therefore youre too dumb to figure it out as well
Coleman slide with seismic trucks. Yes or no?
it helps to hang a bit of heel, but everyone is different. My heel is pretty much flush with the rail.
when I do this I just get really tight turns not sliding am I not going fast enough?
Thank you ! Finally a good tutorial. :)
Which is the best wheel to slide like that?
How much weight is on your hand vs. the board?
i have tried this slide and i just cant do it i think is because of the gloves that hold to much and i wanted to know what hlove would you recomend me for doing this slide.
Any slide glove. The slide glove isnt whats stopping you from sliding.
I have a 48" fishtail do you have any tips on how to do this in a bigger board
keep your stance pretty much

Can you use the slide gloves to stop or slow yourself without actually having the board slide?
No, they're called "slide" gloves for a reason. They slide.
