Hey guys, I live in Florida, USA and basically gave up trying to find a boxed wine that was packaged in the shiny bag rather than clear plastic. The other day I stumbled on it on accident at ABC Liquor. The brand "Folonari" has the shiny plastic necessary to make this flasher. Not sure if it matters, but I got the Pinot Grigio for $18. Tastes good. It's from Italy. Good luck!
great video chris, thanks these buzz bombs are a game changer. i made some smaller ones - clipping them to the end of the gun - or wearing around wrist & on weight belt with quick release for throw flasher style use or even making a buoyant one that i releas when i'm on the bottom that surfaces fast. i call it the riser.
Thanks again mate, trying mine off Brisbane tomorrow. Thanks for the headache this morning as well, I'll just stick with beer as long I don't make any more :)
Chris any suggestions on where in Durban one could find 3-4inch Perspex pre-shaped …. I guess I’m just lazy and don’t feel like cutting & sanding Perspex - thanks
Hi Chris I made 2 Buzz bombs and put a large Tuna style muppet on the top of each of the buzz bombs and put them on a line winder and they work Brilliantly.hope your well.all the best from Cornwall UK
Nice clip on flashers. I think the name buzz bomb started in the early 90s when we used a lure called buzz bomb for a flasher in Zululand. Simply strung on to the end of a fairly thick piece of mono without the hook this thing is deadly all by itself. The small plates are the go. If you cannot find those you can make very good substitute by plastic laminating fish shaped reflective tape and then cutting then out after laminating. light, not hard and they last forever
Thanks for the great tip. I am new into the spearfishing sport and I am heading back to Honduras Centro America where I am planning to get more fish using the rig.
Hey Chris, your flasher is amazing. I've made one, its not as good as yours but guess what my sons and i been shooting doggies, salmon, trevally, barrakuda even wahoo. But no yellowfins yet coz i don't own a boat so we use it outside the reefs but i just want to thank you for sharing. Mohamed and you are how biggest fan, you should see my two sons, one is playing Mohamed and the other Chris Coats lol.... so its me vs CC and M hahahaha... anyway thanks again i'm really happy with the results. Blessings from the tropics.
Thanks for this Chris! I've been using a wine box made flasher, very similar to the Buzz Bong and it really works. But I never found those small reflective fishes online. can you tell me where you get yours?
Looks good! Thanks for making this video, Chris. How about using silver mylar balloons for $1 from the Dollar Tree store in the U.S.? Also, has anyone tried making a disc shaped fish like lookdown from old CDs or DVDs?
Can you do a video on how to tie the fish on the line? Maybe ever just a spearfishing knot video would be cool. It's hard to find spearfishing specific knot videos.
BurninatorTheTrogdor if your not crimping just use double polymer knot for the flashers and the foil tie a clinch knot. Otherwise your just crimping it like he is. Those knots will get it to lay the same way though
Thank you for this informative and cost cutting video, I will try it on the bottom in the Adriatic sea in a few months when the sea temp goes up enough. :)
Great video! Have you ever found that you might have preferred more than a 6oz. weight? Was wondering because we have a strong current here and wondering if a bit more weight would be better or worse?
Hi Chris, thanks so much for the awesome tutorial, I am setting out to make some of these for an upcoming Indo trip. This will be my first flasher, so quick question. What size mono do you like to use in terms of a good compromise between tangling and viz of the mono? Cheers and thanks again!
FYI I'm just a fishermen but my suggestion would actually not use "mono" at all unless it's red. I will explain. Fluorocarbon is invisible underwater. It's great for "line shy" fish like Tuna and other palegics. Second, red line. (I use a mono called " Cajon red") disappears after about 15 ft. Because red is the weakest color in the color spectrum. Good luck!!! FYI red fishing line is by far the cheapest. Also remember. Your not "catching " the fish on a hook. Just catching there attention and distracting them from the predator trying to shoot them. Lol so the strength of the line is really insignificant really.
@@emtpete010 Yes, red gets lost first, that's fact. But I am not sure fish sense colors the say way as humans. I have tried to look into this from time to time but can't find a definitive answer. Some fish supposedly have eyes that function very different from hours. And also, when red is lost, the mono will actually look black (at least to humans) - and sometimes, perhaps black is not what you want either... I am not picking a fight, just saying it may not be as simple as saying that red goes invisible at depth as is often stated. I will keep researching this from time to time and hope one day to stumble upon a definitive answer:)
So, 5 years later - time to add an update. I don't have the luck/luxury to dive in places with huge pelagics but I have used my buzz bombs a lot, still. They will work on barracudas (which are edible where I am), jackfish and many other small pelagics, too. A tip: I have added a bigger sinker at the bottom of my rig and I can move the flasher up and down the line. Reason is, I often shore dive and may use the flasher to mark a spot. In which case I let the sinker sit on the bottom and move the flasher up on the line. But if I swim off of the reef and into the blue, I pull the flasher down to the end of the line and use it in the regular way. Tip 2: If you use it as a marker, consider using stainless steel wire for the bottom 1m of the line. This way, if the sinker gets stuck in the reef, there's no risk of the line getting cut when you try to retrieve it. Before I added the stainless cable, I managed to cut the line 2-3 times, but hasn't happened since:)
Hi folks, at this point (January 2017) has anyone seen the foil- lined wine boxes in the US? - or another source of suitable foil ? -Also, do we currently have a source to buy the " fish"? Or has anyone been ingenious enough to find a source of material from which we can cut out a " fish", then attach a plastic eye? Thanks very much.
I got one... go to Total Wine. I found only 1 box in the entire store, mostly all clear plastic bags in boxed wine here in South FL, but one brand actually had it. Was like 25 bucks or so and the wine was absolutely TERRIBLE! Wasn't even good enough to cook with, had to dump it. But you gotta look closely before you buy the box. Make sure you get the right bag.
Why Do I wake up on a beach, sand in my mouth, missing half my clothes, every time I start a flasher project? Takes me two days to get control of the scissors....... Dive Safe!
Another way to make a super easy flasher is cut out fish out of a can of drink get line tie heaps of loops poke it trough a hole in the fish and over get a 5 ounce sinker for the weight and milk bottle for the float check out the fishing review video of mine
