    yo guys! on Weekend Wankshop 166, Uncle Ben here is gonna hand you a couple Eric Johnson essential strategies for phrasing and picking! We all know Eric's incredible pentatonic and hexatonic mastery from songs like Cliffs of Dover, but what a lot of us don't realize is that EJ has very specific strategies when it comes to his note choices to enable maximum speed and cleanliness. These tricks enable him to blaze with maximum accuracy, but they're also just cool melodic moves too!
    To dig WAY deeper into Johnson's bag of tricks, i STRONGLY advise you watch Troy Grady's Cracking the Code series here on youtube! In particular the episode titled "eric the wise". Truly eye-opening stuff, watch everything he's got on his channel! It really breaks down how EJ built his entire style off of the strengths and weaknesses of downward pickslanting (or DWPS). Check it out!!!
    Playing my Suhr Alt T into my kemper with a little boost/shaping from a new KHDH Ghoul JR! Great little pedal.
    Thanks for watching!

    Instead of trying to imagine where the +12 fret would be, you could just find the midpoint of the bridge and the fret you're playing. The one octave higher pinch harmonic is always halfway between the bridge and the played fret.

    • @BenEller
      @BenEller  6 лет назад +3

      totally true!!!

    • @JohnnyAccioly
      @JohnnyAccioly 4 года назад +1

      Also when hitting a note lower on the fretboard Eric will pinch the harmonic 24 frets above, which can also be found as in Mr7Kostas’ tip, but you eyeball the midpoint between the bridge and the note 12 frets above the one you’re playing. It’s really cool because you hear the fundamental and the harmonic not one but two octaves above it.

    Dear guitar dad.
    How are you? Mom said that she misses you and my guitar step-dad isn't living up to her standards any longer, and he started drinking.
    So I'm writing to you hoping I could get some help on that sweet tone, so I can help guitar mom in this trying time.
    Sincerely
    A huge fan of your work

  • @777Jonathan777

    Excellent lesson. One way to "calculate" the pick position for the octave-up harmonic is to eyeball half of the distance between the fretted note and the bridge. The octave will always be halfway of where you are. Just the way I like to do it

  • @TheScmtnrider
    @TheScmtnrider 5 лет назад +1

    Cracking the Code got me over a 20 year wall. So many right handed guitar players forget about their right hand, once they no longer need to watch it.
    That's how you grow bad habits while digging holes beneath your feet. It's how muscle memory overcomes thinking and melody.
    The goal is to produce your own melodic sound, with creativity and without the limits of repetitive patterns.
    You do that by thinking ahead. That's impossible with repetitive muscle memory patterns.
    Of course you must learn your scales but the result is that you sound like you, and it's good.

    Pretty sure that octave artificial harmonic you (and Eric) use to accent phrases is found halfway between the fret in question and the saddle the same way a "natural" open-string harmonic is found at the 12th fret? (Oh, just noticed Mr7Kostas has already pointed this out below).

    Hey Uncle Ben, I just want to say that I love your work, and maybe I have a challenge for you. In my opinion, Mike Oldfield is one of the most underrated guitarists of our time, I am in love with his long suites (not the cheesy 80's short pieces...), his taste and playing style. I was amazed by the guitar solos in Incantations when I was a kid, but after years, I still cannot figure out rightly the solo in "Part Three", the One that begins around the minute three and twentyfive. If you help me, I will give you my mum. She's short and ugly, but she can wash clothes like no others. Cheers from Italy :) Ciao.
