What other common mistakes should you avoid when making games?
First game dev mistakes video that I watch with actual original and helpful tips, good job!
Thank you, Gwn Andy. I'm glad you liked it!
Very good video. I am happy to know that I am on the right track with my game development. Thanks for the motivation boost that this video gave me.
Thank you, Fibula Dev! I'm glad you liked the video :)
Great set of tips here. I definitely need to work on some of these mistakes for my next project, especially getting people to test the game. I'll probably just release biweekly builds and see if I get any feedback, although it might be hard to get people to try out a half made game. I'll see
Thank you, Skeffles! I'm glad you found the tips helpful :)
Great job! Lots of awesome info here! Thanks for the upload. I use game maker studio 2 as well for my development. I’m really curious to see how you are managing Billy’s Nightmare inside the engine. Things like parent/child relationships, resource tree organization, object set up, script usage etc.. would you be interested in uploading a behind the scenes kind of video like that? Could be useful for others using different engines as well. I’ve made a few mobile games but they aren’t what I would consider ‘big’ projects (coding/assets/objects wise) and I’m really curious to see how a larger project is managed. Love your content, looking forward to the next upload!
Thank you, Jeff Minbiole! Haha after working on Billy's Nightmare for almost 3 years, the project is a mess hold together with duct tape. I don't know if I'd be proud to show it to anyone xD
@@JonasBroman lol I understand! Keep up the great work, looking forward to the next one!
Content gold as usual, keep up the great work!
Thank you, BKing! :)
Oh I've been waiting for this
:D
I love your videos, keep going
Thank you, Shark_25!
I agree with Macro - backup, backup, backup. The second - Probably is great to ask a friend ( If you have one :) for testing UX. How he uses mouse and keyboard. The third - test in a different environment. If you have for example some old potato PC. Another option - try to render something and play your game. Great video, you are awesome!
Thank you, Petr Sláma! :)
Have you experienced any of these mistakes you told us to avoid
Yeah. It took a year before I started making devlogs of my game. It's also the first game that we let people play as a demo to give us feedback. And I always work too hard on my game and these videos and are getting burned out all the time.
The bigest mistake is not having extra save files
You might lose all your project
Yeah that's a pretty big mistake too. Has it happened to you?
I just realized I was not subscribed to the channel. Already fixed this problem.
Haha :)
My issue with making videos is that it takes a very long time to create enough content to warrant a video being made, so I have multi-month breaks in-between videos... and RUclips's algorithm much prefers channels that post multiple times a month (which I think is especially important for early growth). Do you think more small videos is better than infrequent bigger ones? Even if they are only 2-3 minutes long? Or do you have a trick to lengthen a video?
Well, I think it's better to post devlogs when there's enough content to show off. And if there's not enough progress made, you can make some filler videos. Like this one.
Even though I'm not a game dev it really is entertaining and educational. Noice.
Thank you, Kyle. I'm glad you liked it!
Great tips! what's your tips for getting attention in videos you made about your games? I made a small video about a project i made, but no one view it; how do you build up an audience?
Thanks! Building an audience takes time, but here's some suggestions on your current video:
- You should add some voice over, where you talk about the project. Devlogs without someone talking get less attention.
- Starting a video with code and silence will make people leave. You could show or tease the final game at the start of your video.
- I had to use Google to find out what "Conway's Game of Life" even is.
- It would be cool if you started the video with the final game and your voice saying "What is 'Conway's Game of Life'? Well, in this video I'm going to show you.." and so on. That would catch peoples attention.
- That question from above could also be in your video title and even the thumbnail, to make people curious.
@@JonasBroman Thank you very much for the tips; I will certainly use them next time I create a video!
Please make a tutorial how to make a game like billys nigthmare
That's pretty complicated. Anything particular about the game you were wondering about?
With regards to videos on Twitter, why are all of mine coming out blurry? Should I maybe stick to gifs instead?
Yeah my videos too. To be honest I was actually going to say "gifs", but I didn't want to make a big deal about how to pronounce that word.. So I said "video clips" instead xD
@@JonasBroman I pronounce it like I would 'give' just 'gif' you know ;D
He just told us how he manipulated us this entire time
Mohaha!
What's the game at 2:40 ?
I think it's an early prototype of a game called CodeName:SouLJacker
FIRST
Nice!
I made 6 Devlogs and still didn't get more then 100 subs :( unlucky
I clicked your three last devlogs and it felt like I didn't get to see anything from the game itself, mostly you talking. Would be cool to see more gameplay footage. And maybe try some new stuff with the video thumbnails and titles :)
