Richard Whiteley Countdown Gotcha

- This is the famous Richard Whiteley Gotcha from Noel's House Party. The Gotchas were basically hidden camera style practical jokes which were played on celebrities. During Comic Relief 1999, the Whiteley Gotcha was voted as the all time best one.
Enjoy!
On a very rainy day in Huddersfield, I was the only person who turned up for a book signing by Richard. He asked me to stay for a cup of tea and biscuits. We chatted in the window as the rain came down and the occasional postie scuttled by. A lovely, kind and generous man. RIP Richard
Thanks for that story. ❤
@@The_Joker_ A few years ago - I met Richard W at a 1st Class airport lounge at Heathrow and he was at watching Countdown and laughing at all his own jokes - he was a legend
A tragic but sweet story. Was it organised by Artie Fufkin? 😅
@@Ozzpot Played by Paul Shaffer I believe - heres the thing - I still have fond memories of the late great RW - and only loved him more when I saw him doing that. He was as Douglas Adams wrote: "Mostly harmless"
@@Ozzpot,I get it!!!!!!! Stonehenge 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A very young Susie Dent. With the advent out 8 out of 10 cats, it's easy to forget just how long she's been on the original show.
I never even realised 😂😂
really? it is her?
she never did got no baps

Tis indeed! She must be in her early 20s!
He was such a pro. Even with all the chaos he remained funny and entertaining.
This is fantastic. The way whiteley snaps when they can't play the numbers game correctly is pure gold.
What a great presenter Richard was, sad he passed away, very many memories of him. Thanks fella...
The best part about Amanda's 5 is the word THINGS sitting right there, and that still didn't tip poor Richard off.
very funny moment, but it actually did tip him off. somewhere on youtube you can see the whole unedited version, this video is just the highlights. he does catch on after that bit as you hear him say "i'm starting to think this whole show is a wind up directed at me." but of course, nobody would admit it so he had no choice but to keep going and have his patience pushed more and more, but being too nice to say anything XD
This man has never been replaced we all miss him.
Great sport was Richard Whiteley RIP. Met him once in my home town coming off a steam train he had time for me to take a picture with him and was very polite
Richard Whitely such a gentleman, a good sport and an absolute legend.
R.I.P. brother.
This is absolutely brilliant, can't believe I've never seen this before. 😂
Very funny, when they got 5 and 6 out of OMETHINGS, Richard was so taken aback, I lo-o-oved this.
Probably the best prank ever, hilarious and wholesome. Richard laughs the loudest at the end.
God bless Richard Whiteley. *RIP*
I must admit this made me smile
God bless you Richard ..........the only TRUE host of the show who was loyal for many years. The others came and went and were just in it for the money but you were always the real GENTLEMAN and LEGEND
The comedy timing in this was superb
Absolutely brilliant 😅 thanks for posting 😊
Oh brilliant, this is a real hidden gem! Looked for this for years!
Brilliant!! Comedy genius!!!
What a gorgeous, gorgeous man. Never thought I'd hear him say the word 'bollocks' 🤣🤣🤣
oh, this is brilliant!
I really miss these :-(
I have watched this over 100 times never get bored madness
I was a former Countdown champion in Whiteley’s days in the early 00’s. Whiteley was such a nice guy and made you feel at ease.
This was in the days of 9-round Countdown before the 15-round play came into action. Back then they used to shoot 6 in a day. I know for a fact this episode was the 24th they recorded that week so the final show of 4 days of recordings.
They obviously chose this recording to get the best reaction out of Whiteley and the champion that would have won the show before would probably have been asked to keep away from the studio and possibly even sign something like an NDA beforehand.
That was brilliant miss Whitley and Countdown sitting there with my nan miss those days did one day when Vorderman could not solve a hard maths problem and i did even my nan good at maths said i was right i was chuffed but as i say good memories miss the old Countdown
Richard and Carol to me will always be the face of Countdown. Massive loss to the show when he suddenly passed.
they don't make them like they use to
Have you tried 8 out of 10 cats does countdown? It's very much along these same lines :D
First programme ever to be shown on channel 4
Definitely one of the greatest 'Gotchas'
Can you imagine... after all that, you have to deal with Noel Edmonds
What a brilliant winde up
The birth of 8 out of 10 does countdown!
Nice even when he was angry!
so lovely .
Noel’s house party was brilliant Saturday night tv
Remember back when TV was good? I had forgotten it used to be worth watching.
Excellent, he was a good old skin. RIP
The contestants were great actors/actresses
Richard was such a lovely decent man. I’m surprised the others could keep a straight face!
Robert Webb from Mitchell and Webb at 8:12 "That's Numberwang!"
The cleverest ones ever.
Such a lovely man.
RIP Richard, we miss you...
I wish they would bring back Noels House party it was so much better than Ant & Deck
Ant and Deck was the start of the death of telly. Keith Lemon well and truly nailed the coffin shut. Now the towie and googlebox maggots are eating the festering corpse. How anyone can still watch TV in this day and age is beyond me.
5:08: Notice Susie is not looking directly at Richard. Trying so hard not to laugh.
The limerick from dictionary corner was the best.
The sound of Noel Edmunds’ Helicopter, I’m delighted to say, recorded without his permission
Richard Whitely. Legend. RIP
Boy, do I miss proper Saturday Teatime Telly.
75+3=78, 78*8=624, 7-6=1, 624-1=623
The first two steps are equivalent to 75*8=600, 3*8=24, 600+24=624
because (75+3)*8 = 75*8 + 3*8
Once Carol left, I stopped watching Countdown. I used to be transfixed to the show (Because of her really) ever since I was 1! :O
I still have a 90's tape of Carol Vordermann teaching the Times Tables! If it wasn't for me watching it over and over and over when I was a small toddler, I wouldn't of known where to start in maths...
Lovely.
God bless Sir Richard Whiteley
What a good sport he was
Omg that mobile! 😂
Richard's face at 3:31 trying to work out why the brilliant Richard Stilgoe has just delivered a shit poem lol
He probably thought he was having a stroke
Last days of good network Saturday night TV with the end of kringkly bottom!
These were the days
I've got diarrhoea lol.
Brilliant.
So sadly missed.!
After being successfully treated for septicaemia (blood poisoning) Richard's heart valves became infected and he was operated on, but he died a couple of days later, on June 26, 2005.
that's got to be a give away, that must be the easiest letters round ever
Ah the old days when you could shake hands with someone.......
hahhahaahahah really made my evening.
Diarrhoea - "A collection of bowels incontinence"
Richard and Carol were an amazing double-act and you could see the affection they held towards each other. That chemistry has never been repeated since Richard so sadly left us. Gave up watching years ago, and I don't see it getting any better with Anne Robinson. ☹ Anne Robinson? Really???
And a young suzy dent
Richard the contestant was in The Bill - Death of a Cracksman episode.
That was hilarious. lol
welcome to the house of fun.
GNOME-SH1T
Oh yeah, no hyphens..damn!
RIP Richard Whiteley
Rip what a legend
Thanks for showing me Part '2'... What about Part 1 ???
Look at Carol, totally natural back then. Today she looks like a plastic Barbie doll.
I was really cut up when he died as he was by most consistent crack supplier. I loved going over to his cottage and depending on the time of day he was usually already drunk from the night before or a few cans of special brew in already if it was breakfast time. It seems the more wasted he got. By around lunchtime his scorn would usually turn to Carol Vorderman (or Evil Bordom-woman as he called her. By 3pm he would be cursing the executives at channel 4 and by that time he could get particular scornful so I’d make my excuses and leave. I really miss Richard (or as I knew him Lil’ Machete but that’s a whole other story)
So sad, nice TV
Bollocks, he was on to it right away, or even in on it.
Ah yes, back before Carol's chest hit puberty !!
Richard said "once i found a hole in the wall between my changing room and Carol's. I thought about it for a while then decided, what the hell let her look"
What woman wouldn't.
Thats mental
Richard was an absolute gem . I met him once , genuinely one of the nicest people you could meet . Sleep well mate . Sorely missed

They weren't actors, these were the genuine contestants. I can't remember quite how it works, but certainly one of them will have been on one or more shows before this, if not both of them.
@@zacmumblethunder7466 they were actors ofc
@@givemethevalium Yeah, I picked up on that the second time this got recommended to me. I didn't notice when Richard said "Two new contestants" first time around. I thought the show ran with a returning champion until that person got beaten. I've never watched more than two episodes in a row.
@@zacmumblethunder7466 they are actors Amanda Richards was played by Amanda Wise and Richard Max was played by Lawrence Lambert.
@@zacmumblethunder7466 In the full version Richard explains that the returning champion wasn't able to make it to the taping (and would be invited to come back in the next series) so they would have two new contestants for this show. Of course that would have been all part of the gotcha too.
Richard Whitely was one of the nicest guys on tv. Rip.
Derek Gibbons You are right. He was a very nice man. He is much missed
He was the first guy to die after having been a star in a reasonbly priced car on Top Gear (2002-). He was on in season 01 and passed away in 2005 iirc.

Richard Whiteley. Bless him. Nobody will ever replace Richard.
Then, can you please explain to me how the show has since continued?
Personally I always thought Giles Brandreth would have been a natural successor to Richard Whiteley. In my opinion nobody else had really suited the role since 2005.
@@mjstefansson7466 You’re right. Lynam was the worst; no personality, and dull af. Des O’Connor was ok-ish, but the last two were awful. I stopped watching it a couple of years ago, as it had gone so far downhill.

@@hazelanderson1479 I actually liked Jeff Stelling but when Nick Hewer took over I nearly stopped watching it but he sort of grew on me, he has a great chemistry with Rachel and they work well together.
