TLDR it’s to lure Cloud into giving him the Black Materia because you actually don’t see Sephi until the Northern Crater. He’s manipulating him because Cloud has Jenova cells which out of all the test subjects of Hojo, manages to survive (aka not degrade or become a black robed person) but he’s also weak mentally which is another reason he’s a good target. They were implanted into him when he was in the Shinra Manor after the events of Nibelheim.
Also the reason Sephiroth leaves behind pieces of Jenova is because that's not Sephiroth, that's literally Jenova herself being remotely puppetted by Sephiroth (whose body is still in the Northern Crater recovering)
Basically Sephiroth is making Jenova leave bits of herself to impede your progress, Jenova cells can act based on his will (why they are able to fight and why he's able to mind control Cloud at points)
Sephiroth can basically use anyone who has Jenova cells as a puppet or telepathically speak to them.
At 23:10, you ask why Sephiroth leaves behind pieces of Jenova to fight, and the answer is that he doesn't. That's not Sephiroth you meet, it's Jenova taking on the appearance of Sephiroth.
Like I always tell people - Sephiroth didn't kill Aerith, Jenova did.

@KrotharSmash there's an argument to be made that jenova was under Sephiroth's control at that point. It always made more sense to me that it was the other way around though.
At this stage Sephiroth is still only half physically healed in the northern crater. You might say he wouldn't have been able to...stand...a chance. The Sephiroth you think you see is, as mentioned above, Jenova.
The times you see real Sephiroth in present day he doesn't have his shirt on until the final fight (he is shirtless while encased in crystal and shirtless again in the dream sequence). Unknown why they used his clothed model before fighting his multi-phased fight.
@@bigmediafan There's a stronger argument to be made that because Jenova is a master manipulator (as shown throughout the game before the Northern Crater) that you never actually meet Sephiroth outside the Nibelheim flashback. His body is just the biggest, strongest clump of her cells and has fame and power within the world and the minds of the people. It makes sense she'd assume his form and turn the experiments using her cells into him, as he's pretty much peak human performance. Everything he says is pure manipulation, and it's the words of Jenova coming out his mouth. Jenova is presenting as Sephiroth to use his strength and influence.
I can see WHY people want Sephiroth to be the villain of FF7, but I just don't think he is.
I feel like rebirth did a good job with the nibelhiem incident, the fact that you can actually play as sephiroth and feel the raw power he has is immaculate, and he definitely does go insane and I still feel like it fits the character, it’s like a controlled chaos, plus it helps that I see the remake more as a sequel or a companion piece to the original
i love rebirth and especially nibelheim but i gotta disagree, they do NOT make sephiroth feel like the pure storm of destruction he is in the OG nibelheim incident. i remember seeing thunder 3 for the first time and my jaw literally dropping, and nothing like that ever really happened in rebirth (other than the puppy comment)

My personal feelings on the FF7R trilogy and the original are that they're a seperate things. The former is definitely predicated on the latter but, frankly, it's so required to get the most out of the new games that I think it'll always be relevant.
To be clear, FF7 was the first game on the first console that I bought with my own money as a teenager. I literally remember the day I bought it, and I can't even remember my own birthday most of the time. I've played it to completion over 2 dozen times. Which is why I don't think it's a stretch to say that my own nostalgia for FF7 is greater than most.
I definitely see some things that I think could have been executed on better, so I have criticisms. But, I really like the new games in general. I get to be surprised and fall in love with these characters all over again. It's got it's own strengths and flaws, and hits differently in places, but it's another take on something that I've always loved. So, I'm here for it.
If you’ve ever seen the movie The Thing by John Carpenter then that is basically what Jenova is - a shape-shifting organism where every cell can operate as an individual entity when separated. Its cells can also infect other organisms to turn them into more of itself. After it crashed onto the planet (creating the northern crater) it appeared to the Cetra there and began its infection, often appearing as its victims to approach further victims. Eventually it was defeated and its last humanoid body was sealed away, this is what the Shinra found and mistook for an an Ancient/Cetra. Years later after the nibelheim incident Jenova’s remains were moved to the Shinra headquarters and while Avalanche were captured Sephiroth took control of Jenova transforming it into his own likeness and used it to slaughter his way through Shinra HQ. While the party believes they are chasing Sephiroth across the world they are actually chasing Jenova in his form, the boss fights against Jenova are pieces of it that are left behind and then transform into those monstrous forms. All this time the real Sephiroth is cocooned at the northern crater where the lifestream carried him after his defeat in Nibelheim five years ago. Sephiroth is sending out his will to control Jenova using the connection between separated Jenova cells.
8:47 to start a discussion on something i noticed from the remake is that the nibelheim incident actually hints at the truth now! From clouds voice being off. To talking to the soldier on the right and asking them if it feels nice to be home, to haveing the fire scene trying to reach his mom sound like him properly. And then tifa commenting to "Steve" that she doesn't remember cloud being there.
That still leaves me guessing if this game is still even a remake, Or a sequel?!?!
I haven't finished yet so i would ask not to be spoiled on that question but these were things i happened to notice whlie playing rebirth. ^•^
An additional thing I noticed was that when Cloud sat on the water tower in the flashback he *didn’t* remove his sword which would’ve meant that it stuck in the wood.
The first installment literally had Sephiroth say "you can't safe her" with flashbacks of the original game happening. And the I-forgot-their-name are only there to keep the story the same as it was originally. It's pretty clear this isn't a remake, it's generally called a reboot and even that isn't fully correct.
@@tobias5968 as people have stated on the discussion on this it can be debated if it's maybe just a remake or a more fleshed out version. The only reason this theory comes up is because the original game had themes of fate and destiny. As well as a destroyed clock that was used by the ancients.
And while an extreme long shot admittedly, one could look at it as though only sephiroth traveled back in time to then mess with the timeline to the correct path of the original, that was not their intended fate. (Again that's a long shot) Also I have not finished the new game as I said. So I've been avoiding spoilers. So I'm willing to believe some new developments may have changed that perspective. ^•^
I'm 77 hours into rebirth. It's a beautiful game and I'm enjoying the story telling. The original had me terrified as a kid. The rebirth has me starstruck as an adult. I'm going to replay the original after I'm finished with rebirth
I just finished Rebirth, and my mind is all saturated with FF7, so this video is perfect timing wise so I can process my thoughts on the game and the original lol.
A huge part of the original’s atmosphere is due to the low quality assets like you say. You can’t recreate the same level of horror/suspense that comes from forcing you to imagine it yourself. As much as I love the look of Mt Nibel, the demonic nature of the spikes would look out of place in the remake and may make readability difficult. Plus, I feel like a turn based game works much better for showing the power difference between Sephiroth and cloud better than an action scene could-all loops back into the battles being an abstraction.
I really enjoyed Rebirth and plan on NG+, but so many of my (and your) criticisms come from the nature of the remake itself, but I just don’t know how much of that is the lack of opportunity for my mind to run wild now that I’m in my 30s and kids playing it now feel like I did then.

The Nibleheim Incident is weird for me, because I got into the FF7 series in 2008 with Crisis Core. Only watched a play-through of FF7 during that time cause getting a hand of the game and having no internet was a struggle to find.
For me, I think it did it better if you had that knowledge of the scene in there, as lot of Cloud's dialogue and actions mirror Zack's pretty spot on. Only thing that made it perfect *for me* is if actually fought Sephiroth in a unwinnable fight there.
But as for OG FF7, I just can't see them replicating the uniqueness of the PS1's limitations. The haunting music, the eerie atmosphere, with how it's up to you guess the mystery on that voice in Cloud's head and his mental issues. The vagueness and silence of that era is what drew you into the mystery, as well as how characters talked was left for you to hear in your mind.
OG Cloud and Remake!Cloud are night and day different, been replaying OG FF7 after Rebirth since my memories are scattered with the game.

I wasnt exactly blown away by the Nibelheim incident scene either... but the moment I stepped out into Kalm, I knew they just got it... and its had me by the balls for the 40 hours ive played since. 😅

Looking back, I’m so swept up in seeing everything 3Dified I honestly forgot about stuff like that and I can understand and agree with your points you made about Mt.Nibel and Sephiroth really. The NPC’s talk about how Mt.Nibel and it’s presence over the village makes it more haunting but they don’t really show it. I’d expect Mt.Nibel to be cloudy and have some sort of stormy weather to make it seem more frightening and scary.

In my opinion horror aspect of the original is lost in remake, unfortunately. For example there is no scene, where everyone were butchered in shinra building. Or seeing jenova for the first time.
I only just discovered this today, so someone has probably already told you, but Steal chance is solely based on character level, so hindsight, you should have put Exp Plus on Yuffies list (even tho you don't have access to it yet)
Buy just wanted to say, this is the kinda thing I like. I mean challenge runs are cool and all, but your system looks genuinly fun, with a few tweaks this could totally be what I've been looking for to get some enjoyment put of FF7 again.

I feel like the parade mini game was harder than it needed to be because you were literally given incorrect instructions.
On the comparison between rebirth and OG: I didn't play the OG until I was an adult and I've really enjoyed both versions, but I have to agree on the tone being pretty different. I think Rebirth really nails the lighthearted parts of the OG and expands on the party characters really well but doesn't quite capture the weight of the more serious scenes, especially any scene with Sephiroth. That being said, I really enjoy the game for what it is, especially the combat, which I think is the best SE has made in years

I really like what they've done with the kalm flashback in rebirth (I only played the demo) But one aspect that I feel that was lost in translation is showing through gameplay how much stronger sephiroth is. It's cool that you can play as him but he doesn't feel that much stronger than cloud is.
I 100% concur with the Oddworld atmosphere/dark setting comparison era etc. Loving the content keep it up 💪🏼😊
Sephiroth is shown taking zero fire damage from the dragon, that's why the village being on fire had no effect on him.
First time I reached Sephiroth in the original game I tried casting a fire spell on him to see if he kept that immunity and was really disappointed when he didn't. Turns out in the flashback he's just scripted to take zero damage.
Pro tip: You can easily get Yeah on Tofu's limit breaks every time, just press square/switch to keep the slots in place, they'll only turn when you release the button, so you can make them move as slowly as you want and choose your outcome. All slots in the game can be manipulated this way.

if you look at rebirth as an honest to goodness remake then it simply doesnt match up. there was a certain magic, like you said, of having to fill in the gaps left by the technology with your imagination.
that said, rebirth as its own thing is freakin awesome. the moments they do recreate near 1:1, like them talking about the natural materia, are so cool to see fully fleshed out. also, knowing the full story of the flashback, i thought they did a great job of depicting Zack through young Cloud whenever hes speaking.

23:18 Jenova is a shapeshifter. Similar to the thing. Beyond that almost everything is fan speculation.
The first three fights (Jenova Birth, Life & Death) presumably take on her natural appearance. The blue skin alien lady form is probably the form of a Cetra woman she took that has degraded over time to look all messed. It could be that the form you fight at the end of the game is her true form, and the other ones are just what she can make quickly for a fight.

Honestly, I've finished rebirth at this point, and i can slightly agree about the horror elements, but not fully because theres still some horror elements there. My biggest let down was the Corel prison part, it just did not have the same vibe as the original, and a big part of that is they did not translate the music well at all and gave it this weirdly whimsical feel, didnt like it one bit, but other than that, rebirth is phenomenonal.

I'm a Rebirth superfan and I also agree with all the points you made about the characterization of Sephirot and all the horror elements kinda missing from this retelling, but the fact that the OG FF7 sill exists in all its glory and that I can play it again and again forever and ever makes it all okay overall... Plus Rebirth's combats, dialogues and musics are also kinda godlike so its not hard for me to still like it despite its obvious flaws.

I do disagree with most your criticism of Rebirth and Remake, the plate fall was way more impactful for me. That said you shouldn’t view the remake as competition to the OG, it’s a celebration.
I understand the story changes can be a bit much but I’ve come to enjoy the remake for what it is, plus I don’t think I could do better than the people who created both games.
Active time battle wait and hp plusses really makes this game a lot easier. I remember when we played this when we were young and went with active battle on and game speed full to make things faster. Literally had to have 2 hp plusses with everyone before they went to max 50%. Still had to really pay attention when to put cures on hold and stuff.
Makes me wana do it once again now 25 years later :D Been playing it easy.
Plus things like big guard lasts a really short while :S At least during the earlier parts. Dunno which stats makes puffs last longer

you're right getting HP pluss is more useful than rune edge with the drill mini game.
You can use it and go back to midguar zolem and actually get beta from enemy skill there and it carries you the entire disc one
If you don't get it,' trine' enemy skill is your next bet but that's after the turks in the cave a bit later.
To my knowledge the sephiroth we fight through most of the game isn't sephiroth. It's Genova we see in the Shinra building turned into a sephiroth shape that he can control it from the northern crater. I think it's supposed to be it make these monsters from its self. I don't know if you are suppose to know from the beginning or whatever since this is second hand info.
I liked the Nibelheim Flashback alot in Rebirth. They did a great Job in my Opinion.
You say cait isn't that strong, but speed runners can practically one shot any enemy in the game with his slots death spell

My thought on Rebirth is, for a PC gamer like me it doesn't even have a release date yet, so I don't want to see anything of it yet. I want to go in as fresh as possible once it's out! :D
I'm pretty far into Rebirth (just started chp 11), and I'm really enjoying it. My biggest gripe so far is that some story sections feel artificially slowed down. It's like they're meant to be puzzle sections but there's no actual puzzle, just something straightforward but tedious you have to do before proceeding.
You can't really comment on how Rebirth feels true to FF7 without playing it.

I will say i understand caits role in the original especially in disc 2 but i do think remake/rebirth does a better job of setting him up and making him join understandable. It shows Reeve as a sympathetic character more and Reeve alters Shinra records and such to help the gang get by easier which definitely does a lot to help you like him more

The reason you fight jenova on the ship is because the "Sephiroth" you're following for most of the game isnt Sephiroth, its Jenova in the form of sephiroth, so what you fought actually was the sephiroth you saw, meaning that the Jenova body parts can likely act on their own.

Yuffie has no ties to the story but she's the best character to have besides Cloud because her final weapon ignores the damage reduction on morph materia, plus long range, great limit breaks... She's insane 😭

love your content, love your vids, but thats a L take on Rebirth especially for not having played it. I LOVE the original, my 2nd favorite FF after X, one of the greatest games ever, and believe me Rebirth (and Remake) do it justice. Sure, the vibes are different but thats because that 1990s ps1 feeling cannot be replicated. The primitive graphics are part of it, yes, but it was also a time and place. I love both and they dont take away from one another.

Yeah, you need to play the Remake. It's still dark and gritty, but fleshed out. So, so fleshed out. I have not stopped smiling since Feb 29th. I have just reached Cosmo Canyon and it is just... perfect? Yeah, perfect.

The Sephiroth you follow most of the game ISNT Sephiroth. It's a shape-shifting Jenova. That's why she keeps dropping piece of herself to fight you
Easily 9999 HP 999 MP and KoTR Carry armor onwards is all you need + Mime it 10 to 20x TO Kill Emerald/Ruby weapon with it.
I think the definitive version of the Nibelhim incident is OG Crisis Core but that was also my first experience with all of that

I found this vid by accident but your thoughts on rebirth is my EXACT feelings. In the original all we had was text boxes, music , and a few cutscenes. The rest was left up to us to interpret. Now in rebirth thru voice acting and facial expressions is totally different im some key parts. Dont get me wrong the game is very good but it fell short in capturing some of those feelings. Sephiroth was Scaryyy … not so much in rebirth. Some scenes was almost the opposite feeling from the original with BGM. I just play the game for what it is
I think Sephiroth/Jenova is better represented in OG, due to hardware at that time and also how game narratively presents him.
Sephiroth after AC is always smiling guy. He is just a guy, who like to play with cloud, which is diferrent. And that's why in rebirth it gives diferrent vibes. (and also sound design of the scenes is strange in rebirth)
I only played a bit of the original ff7 on the PC port so I don't have any nostalgia so I liked the nibilhiem scene I didn't really know that sephiroth changed so I thought that the scene worked although I do super get the horror is gone from this scene and others

I think one think rebirth did great was the graphics, bc I’m playing on a tv and I cant stop admiring how pretty everyone is!
I'm about halfway through rebirth i think and im very impressed with how big it is and it feels pretty faithful. That being said i totally see what youre saying, and the nibbleheim incident felt like it took a bit too long in rebirth. Especially the stupid vacuum parts. That being said, the only real complaint I have is the fanfic level Chadley being way too ubiquitous in the game. He's really annoying and now there's two of them. And they never shut up, and take away from the (In my opinion) very fun open world sections.
After watching a a play through of the beginning parts of the game I can agree that Chadley seems VERY annoying
The only time Chadley really gets on my nerves is when I complete a huge chunk of world intel, and then I go do all the simulator battles that were unlocked, and after I finish those he’s like “I can’t help but notice that World Intel progress has stalled, I’m sure a professional like you would never slack off but that’s exactly what I’m accusing you of in the most passive-aggressive way possible”.
The characters of Rebirth definitely did right by the original. Especially the Flashback sequence

The negativity towards rebirth feels a bit much man (especially if you haven't played it and have only just watched videos about it), I'm a huge fan of the original and I'm having a blast with it so far.
Fortunately for you, most of the internet is enjoying Rebirth and likes it a lot.
I get his point, but I’ve got nothing but praise for Rebirth. I think it does lack some of the charm of the original but that’s probably because I’m so nostalgic about it.

I wonder why everyone sees Sephiroth as this super villain, when all he does is sleeping in the north crater. There are other FF games with way better villains like FFV (Exdeath), FFIX (Kuja) and most of all FFVI (Kefka).

I totally agree about Rebirth and even the first game in the remake. I grew up with Final Fantasy VII and it's my favorite game but I feel like a lot of what made the original so great was lost in the remakes. It was my biggest gaming disappointment in recent memory.
Completely agree with you on the FF7 rebirth drawbacks compared to the original. I think that the Nibelheim Mako reactor is an even bigger example of how the new game fails to show how dark and spooky it should be. In the original, the mako reactor is steam-punk and cool as shit, bricks and chains and the gloomy glow of Mako, in the remake it's a big, square metal room. The chamber with pods in the orignal is almost organic, like you're inside the beating heart of a lovecraftian monster, in the remake, it's a big square metal room.
In conclusion, I've decided that I'll refer to the remake as the FF7 fanfic instead :)
The core gameplay is pretty solid, but the story and art direction is completely butchered compared to the original.

The """remakes""" are really bad in terms of retelling the story of FFVII.
The 1st game (purposefully wrongfully named "Remake") tells the story of the FFVII cast fighting destiny itself to prevent the story of FFVII from happening again, and when they succeed Aerith tells them that "Freedom" is waiting for them on the other side of the time dementors they killed. But then Rebirth comes out and it's largely following the story events of FFVII!?
It's not nostalgia clouding (HA!) your judgement, the newer titles are just convoluted and don't understand or outright despise the original, but SE has put itself in a situation where they absolutely must deliver FFVII while hating the idea of FFVII itself!
Also, they hate colors! You putting the cutscenes one after another like that has made me realize how devoid of life and boring to look at the """remake""" is! The original was plenty colorful and managed to have that sense of horror, but the newer titles are just technically impressive but everything seems to blend with itself because they desaturated everything!
