In the Netherlands when you put the blue sign verticale, you ask another ship to do a starboard starboard passage and when the other ship shows you also the blue sign, you can do a starboard starboard passage. What a beautifull and interesting ship and nice video to watch.
Think of this vessel as a blank slate. Look past all the 'stuff' and this is a true gem just waiting for the right owner to take over and do a proper refit.
Are you watching a different video? It's clearly 50 years old and made for a 10 or more people to have 7 showers a day. What else could it be refit too?
I think the accomodation is in some need of a refit/ uplift with all those cabins and showers. I loved the salon/ kitchen space and owners accomodation. Plenty of space too. Hated the 1.90 height though, can't change that @@markjones1337
What an incredible boat and so much potential. If I could sell my boat in a short period of time I would not hesitate to buy this one. For what we do with our boat this one is even more perfect. Take out all the cabins below, redesign that space and it would be perfect. I am speechless.
There's so much to like about this little ship (or big boat maybe better describes). First impressions is her look of sea worthiness and ocean crossing capability. Next is how spacious she is. The Bridge is huge, the saloon is huge, the engine room is just huge and spacious....you could add a wing engine in there. 11kts top speed when needed to get in front or away from weather. You would probably want to throw another 200K into upgrades if your intention is chartering, but still have price point way less than smaller six berth less capable yachts. Imagine this on a round the world charter where you are selling various legs of the journey....awesome!
Thank you for sharing tour of this wonderful vessel. 😊❤😊 The master stateroom looks like a officers area went the vessel would have been Government usage. The below deck freezer storage looks just like big ships have. The vessel would be wonderful for charter up the inside passage of Vancouver BC. I could see myself doing charter going into those large bays that no one lives in. Letting guest explore with there kids ( all the bunk beds) digging clams shucking Oyster on the beach. I love the big wind shield on fly bridge, yes it looks strange. The controller up tops side could see myself there maneuver the vessel. I would want all the owners tools in engine room. Even though you don't have redundant engine, this vessel with just one engine could go far. I love it you find these great very ship shape vessel to tour.
Every time I see you give a salute in your videos I salute back out of respect. People look at me like I'm a lunatic, woohoo! Great little ship that with deep pockets $$$ could be transformed into world class luxury without a doubt. God Bless to all...
Waiting for so long in this video before getting to the engine room is frustrating. As an owner operator of large yachts the first thing i want to know is about engines stabilisers etc. anyone who has passaged in very difficult conditions (as I have ) recognises that your engines are life savers
Oh my, finally a vessel that looks like it can spend time at sea. Most modern boats are designed to spend their days tied to a dock. ( but of course, the newer boat’s brochure will say it will handle off shore seas all the way around the horn. Ha ha)
Interesting. I could think of lots of ways to spend serious money on this vessel. The owner and his wife do exceptionally well to sail it themselves. Thanks for sharing...
Hi John, that ship looks the buisiness for proper exploration IMHO. Those who want a floating gin palace marina queen, then its not for them 😎. So much room for dry stores and im sure lots of freezer/cold rooms can be installed so you can distance explore easily. For an ultimate one-upmanship you have your own sauna, lots of others only have hot tubs 🧐 Cheers DougT
A very solid little ship. Plenty of potential for the lucky owner to exploit. I would certainly reduce the number of cabins to make more room in the others that are left. They could certainly do with some cupboard space.
The 3408 is one of the best marine diesels you can have. This is a boat for someone with mechanical ability, a couple with occasional guests or maybe kids. Yes the guest staterooms are small, but I don't think it is worth it to change the configuration into a few larger cabins. If that is what you want, buy a different boat. The key thing if you bought this boat is to go through the mechanicals. Over 25 years since the last refit and only 1300 hours on the motor means that you need to check out the mechanicals, there is something waiting to break. Service the keel cooler and the gensets and the bow thruster. Go through all the systems carefully. I think one would be happier with a larger dinghy. Check the plate thickness carefully. As far as having a wing engine, this would not be so hard to install. With three gensets, could even be an electric engine. The ZF saildrive would not be that hard to install and can handle 120 HP. An EV motor could be adapted very easily. This is a get home engine. Take care of your main engine, carry spares and keep the oil and fuel clean and you will be okay. With that huge radar mast you could even put a square sail on it.
With 650 boats for sale there is a lot to choose from. But this one is for a real captain! The history and character, I just love it! Wouldn't change a thing, this would be my private time-capsule to get away from the daily rush.
Not just the Rhine but also all Dutch rivers, its passing starboard on starboard. It needs to be confirmed by the oncoming vessel, if not then you need to do the traditional way. Mostly used on tidal rivers as the upstream vessels like to hug the inner shore as there is less current.

The blue shield indeed is to indicate the intention of passing oncoming traffic starbord instead of port, whenever the shield is in vertical and therefor visible position. Not only on rhine, but also on other rivers in germany, and maybe elswhere in Europe.

The one thing that would drastically improve this boat is a wing engine, for use in emergency or calm waters (for economy). Many hours of painting would also improve the lesser used areas too. Good video and shows everything well.
Only Nordhavn fanboys complain about wing engines. Completely unnecessary as these engines are build to last and just need a spare if there is an issue. Engine redundancy is just there for people unable to make some repair. Ever seen a oil-tanker or any carrier with double engines or heard of any stranded mid ocean because of engine failure? Yeh! A real boat not a flash over side toy speed boat. 2.9mtrs draft displacement hull for this size is serious stuff. And its good to hear a real mariner appreciate this kind of tough boat. You really could take this boat around the world very comfortably. Very unusual interior design. Set up more for practical hard work living than luxury. However this could all be re done and brought up to date and then you have a very unique tough serious yacht. Love the practical "single" engine room. Some of the toughtest boats have only one engine. Thanks for this superb video on a real tough ocean going classic boat.
I cant stand the posh retrofits that these worker vessels receive. Much prefer the utilitarian layouts. That said, it does need some reworking, and that fake wood paneling is dreadful.

Because of where you need to work. Even something that is majority home office will usually not be 100% remote, you need to be able to get into an office at least sporadically with almost all office jobs
A real little ship. With those two gensets, an electric motor coupled to the propeller shaft could provide a backup propulsion system in the event of trouble with the main diesel. Would likely give 4-6 knots with relatively minor alteration.
Really interesting layout. I would feel really safe in this. Minor changes in the saloon/galley area, and other little things and she would be perfect for any area where you need this kind of vessel. The number of cabins is really nice but unless you regularly carry yourself and 10 guests you could create a VIP with a bit more room and private head. Anyway just wanted to drop a comment for you.
The accommodation requires complete refurb and a couple of cabins sacrificed to benefit the remainder. Twice the purchase price spent additionally, would turn this vessel into a superb exploration trawler. Single engine would be enough of a handicap to sway me away from considering purchase. Thanks for sharing!
Very excited to hear about the progress from Archipelago. Great stuff! Happy to hear they are thinking about steps off the back. Very important for MOB and also would really help entry/exit from a dinghy and maybe landing the odd fish. Would be interested to learn about sizing of the battery bank / speed vs range expectations for the hybrids.
Well, that square blue/white 'table' at 10:30 is an official signal: the "Blauwe bord" When in use it is tilted 90degrees forward (the blue facing forward) and the white light in the middle is turned on (flashing). It is used when ships want to meet on the 'wrong' side of each other. Normaly one meets 'port on port' but sometimes ships want to meet 'starboard on starboard' or 'Blauw op blauw' (bleu on bleu). This procedure is used on the rivers (Rhine, IJssel). Where ships in the "opvaart" (going upstream, 'up the hill') usually like to stay on the inside of riverbends where there is less current to overcome. In that case the ships in "opvaart" show their bleu/white/flashing white light to signal their intentions to the "afvaart" (ships going downstream). often this is accompanied with some VHF communication.
This boat is a gem. The only drawback is that I hate single engine boats. Serious question, in your opinion, can the boat be repowered to be a twin engine configuration? Maybe with two smaller CAT engines that vould even have a higher combined horsepower. From your video perspective it appears that there is room for two engines. I think it could even keep the single rudder. I know cost would be a factor but if the hull thickness is ok, it would add years of life to this old lady.
After seeing what Damen Maaskant did to Scintilla Maris then I believe that, with the right budget and technical team, anything is possible! There is certainly lots of space.
De Blue bord is indeed for using on de Rijn and adjacent rivers. In case of strong headcurrent at the starbord side of the river it will be effective to sail at the portside of the the river. This is ideal boat for me to do Expedition trips in Seychelles. With 1.4 million kilometres of ocean territory and 115 islands this will ne ideal for an affordable 2 week charter here
She's a beautiful old gal with good bones. With the right budget and in the right hands, she could be brought up to 2024 fit and finish with another 60+ years ahead of her. My only concern at first glance is the headroom on the main deck. I am 1,93m and it looks lower than that in height.
this ship is epic, iv always wanted to go on the ocean in crazy storms and huge waves, it sounds terrifying but im an adrenaline junkie i guess, iv never been on the ocean cuz im broke and dont live near an ocean lol but iv been obsessing over the idea of working on the ocean, hit me up and lets sail the north sea! lol im broke but id drop everything and leave right now. XD this ship would be a good one.
Thank you for the tour. I like it. Berth area could use some updating in my opinion. They lack appeal and also odd to see a simple shower in one and a lone sink in the other.
This might be a tough one to sell. Proper little ship, reminds me of my days as deckhand on oceanographic research ships. You'd need to use her as a charter with paying guests, and really pinpoint your clientele: either people who are just hardcore offshore passage-making and exploring types and who could put up with her dated and less than attractive accommodations, or you'd need to spend a fair bit and redo them, maybe reduce the number of cabins and then charge more for some well-heeled customers who just want to swan about on a nice yacht and be at anchor most nights. Or, half a dozen buddies get together and buy her and off they go! Either way, she needs a refit first. Pretty ship though, no question.

Sure is a nice boat.
Cooles ship.. Relativ.. Guenstig
This is ideal boat for me to do Expedition trips in Seychelles. With 1.4 million kilometres of ocean territory and 115 islands this will ne ideal for an affordable 2 week charter here
Sounds fantastic! Sign me up 🫡
In the Seychelles paying guests are going to want Air Conditioning
The galley looked a bit small...

She's a beautiful old gal with good bones. With the right budget and in the right hands, she could be brought up to 2024 fit and finish with another 60+ years ahead of her. My only concern at first glance is the headroom on the main deck. I am 1,93m and it looks lower than that in height.
I have seen her a number of times in the flesh here at Hollands Diep and Willemstad ( nl). Like her a lot.
The blue square is indeed when you sail on the wrong side of the river Rhine
this ship is epic, iv always wanted to go on the ocean in crazy storms and huge waves, it sounds terrifying but im an adrenaline junkie i guess, iv never been on the ocean cuz im broke and dont live near an ocean lol but iv been obsessing over the idea of working on the ocean, hit me up and lets sail the north sea! lol im broke but id drop everything and leave right now. XD this ship would be a good one.
Would make a good dive boat. Or one of those northern passage ships that take people from Port to Port like a sleeper ferry, but more private
Thank you for the tour. I like it. Berth area could use some updating in my opinion. They lack appeal and also odd to see a simple shower in one and a lone sink in the other.
Thanks for watching!
I'd love to go to fort brag CA. and why not go there it would be nice
She's gorgeous ❤
this is amazing!!
It would be crime to posh her out. It does need a retrofit, but just some modernizing and better material choices. Layout is perfectly fine.
Going to retire in Fiji and I'm in the market! Absolutely gorgeous vessel!
