Hip hop’s first superstar! And he was one helluva lyricist and storyteller too.
Remember the collaboration with Run-DMC of 8 Million Stories??? That song rarely ever gets referred to as one of the most important rap songs in hip hop history!
I was in high school when this came out and it's classic Christmas fare, just like anything else. We play it every year. Still jams.
This song is on my Christmas playlist
The group Next sampled this in “Too Close”.
This was his first release. Fall of 1979. The Breaks came next. Same producers and musicians.
Larry Smith right?
Also a rnb group samples this beat, the name of the group is called 'NEXT'
This is a landmark rap cut and was the first REAL RAP cut to get national airplay end of 1979. Rapper's Delight came out a couple months before and was huge national hit but was more of a party disco kind of "rap" cut that used the baseline from a big disco hit Good Times by Chic.
Next - Too Close
"...and the guy with the 88 started to participate and I can sure appreciate a sound so sweet..."
the first live hip-hop show I went to was him. this song and The Breaks were huge hits for the funk, r&b and disco scene.
This dropped in 7th grade and the we hit a house that Christmas Eve and they played this as the clock struck midnight🎼🎅🏿🕺🏾
I was ALWAYS convinced that Kurtis Blow could literally rap about ANYTHING
Basketball and Hello Baby by Kurtis Blow.
Classic Hip Hop Jam from Kurtis Blow Raps first Superstar!
Just Jammin' I don't believe in Santa Claus either but I just go along with it for the grandchildren at this point 🎅🏾☃️🦌❄️🎄 This joint stays on my Christmas playlist
The first 🐐
My brother There was a group called next that used his beat on a song called too close. You need to check that song out
And now you know that even Santa Claus into rap. Nothing wrong with not believing in Santa. Thank you for choosing to do a reaction to this song.
"The beard may be weird, but I never have it sheared; cuz it's warm for your form when it's 10 below!!" :D I'm a total Grinch, but I love this tune!
Around 4:00 he starts to just KILL IT on top of the Queen bass line, straight 🔥
If you like the lyrics to this rap song, you have to listen to the Extended version of this song - some of the best lyrics are not in this version, in my humble opinion. I was a teenager in High School and in remember when this song came out - it was on the heels of Fatback's "King Tim III" and Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight"....all classic rap songs that will forever be part of the fond memories I had at Hanau America High School in Germany. Everyone loved these songs, no matter what color, race, creed you were. They were played at every high school dance and we blasted them on our boomboxes that we took to school and everywhere we walked. Thanks for your reaction. Peace.
He Boogie Oogie Oogied til he had to go.
Wow, I love this, I asked JJ to react to this one months ago...nice to see he’s finally got to hear it, this is way better than The Breaks in my opinion, this beat is insane
I share you beliefs. Nimrod was born on the 25th. You should find the long version of this song
Proverbs 7:1
Thinking deeply about imaginary boogie men in the sky, and dwelling on agendas that don't even necessarily exist, serves only to solidify adult paranoia...as for kids?...they just want to open presents and see colorful lights during Christmas, dress up in fun costumes on Halloween, and blow out candles on their birthday.....
Should’ve reacted to the video
Don't celebrate Christmas either. Haven't for 8 years. Kurtis and the other rap artists from the early days had a smooth flow and easy to understand lyrics.
try telling kids there s no santa stay away from religion everyones got there take on religion its why we have wars and politics stick with music a force for good in a world of evil
