Nice fix. It is surprising how simple the inside of a tombstone is..half empty space and a fan. Now you have an excellent welder that will probably never die.
Roger, even when the power is on I didn't think current would be running through the contacts to arc over as you mention until the stinger actually contacted something to complete the circuit. I can understand that you wouldn't want to change amp settings while actively welding though. Anyone else supply an update? Thanks...
@@rogermathura I did sweetie, which is why I am asking. "Mine says "When WELDING" which is a little ambiguous. It also says DON'T turn the freaking thing off when you reach the duty cycle for a particular amp rating so that the fan will continue to run to cool the unit down. This was an honest question. I guess that I asked the wrong moron. Perhaps you need to go back and RTFM yourself.
Man i tell you what im glad you made this video because it pointed me right to the little copper tab thats supposed to move with the switch, mine was doing the same thing and that copper tab had come lose and was just dangling lol bravo great content bud
The grommet for the 220V power cord "disappeared" during the reassembly... You might want to "find" it so that you don't eventually find out what sort of sparks 220VAC makes when a metal chassis edge wears through the power cord...
The nylon gear is still available from Lincoln. Running the Roll pin directly against the metal detentes will cause premature wear and the switch will not hold its setting.
Could you share the part number of that gear or how to look for it? I've been looking for a good while and have yet to find it. I can only find the shaft (which i do need) and the entire switch assembly replacement.
You've inspired me to take mine apart sir !! Thank you , I was feeling like I got ripped off after giving 100$ on fb and she won't fire up at all ...hope I can fix mine !!
Well it's probably something small..I'd start with the plug and cord, then test the on/off switch and then the amp selector..probably going to be cord or plug related if the fan doesn't come on as they still work without the fan..the fans tend to die 1st so its worth testing.. also not sure if you seen the videos on converting them to DC with a simple full bridge rectifier , heatsink and if you want to get fancy a selector switch if not have the terminals sticking out the front via den connectors..so you have DC+,DC-,and AC which allows you to burn different types of rods for different metals like Alum, SS etc as is AC can only weld on steel..I'm sure you will get it working again as they are really indestructible..mine is probably 50yrs old and burns rods all day..
How is my first welder 16 years old my dad taught me how to weld I still have it till this day I am now 65 years old Bob Elkhart Indiana I know I have a Hobart Handler 190 I love it
Good farmer fix, a little bit of dielectric grease on that roll pin would help. You probably didn’t have quite enough heat on that solder connection though. 😂
4:35 I had to do a very similar thing, on an old tombstone, as well. As far as 'plastic' goes : MAKE ONE FROM REAL METAL/steel. Wouldn't be hard, use a piece of pipe, the same OD as this needs. File/grind the sawteeth, and your basically done. NEVER to fix the 'detents' for each range again. Near the end of video: use a scavenged booster cable, larger size 00 and add it to the ground cable = super long, like 25 feet or so. Mine goes anywhere in the garage....(oldshopguy)
Great job ! I love beating the system like that. That little plastic detent part was specifically designed to fail and that welder was supposed to go to the dump and be replaced by a brand new one…and the new one would have another “weak link” so it would be sure to fail I a given period of time , and probably a much shorter period of time than the old one.
That’s just not true. That welder is 40+ years old and there are TONS of them still in operation. Planned obsolescence is a thing, but not with that machine.
Knowing virtually nothing about circuitry myself, I wanted a welder that is easy to maintain, or better yet (almost) never have to maintain because it is such a simple powerhouse. Learned these buzzboxes existed a month ago, and can't wait to get/fix one up now!
I like your approach tackling the job . ! You were really simple just dealt with the problem didn’t have to go on forever why it didn’t work . Thanks man !
I gotta say this and I'm sure 50 others have before. It's an AC welder. While one lead may come as "ground" it doesn't matter. It only matters on AC/DC where it also has a polarity switch. Nice video though!
If your center shaft has grooves in it from trying to force the selector without pulling out you can reorder it for about 4 bucks at airgas. Lincoln P/N: 9SS13206 I just had to replace mine on an old 1970s welder. Still works!
Bought mine a couple days ago to learn. Replaced the fan and put on a longer and thicker power cord. Other guys at the shop still think it is running cold and needs to be set to way higher amps than it is supposed to. Anyone else have an issue of these things not making as much power as they are supposed to?
My first guess would be you are a long ways from the main breaker or were power drop is. 2nd guess is what if transformer core was overheated maybe needs relaminated, 3rd heard on internet Some houses with 100amp service were outfited with 60amp meters if they corrode you get even less.
Watch your duty cycle. As you noticed a melting terminal. Building a trailer for a friend I melted a portion of the selector. He was in a hurry and didn't want to let the unit have cool down breaks.
Good video I just got one not a tombstone mine has a rounded top but same company and power I'm trying to find some 8/3 wire for free so I can run it from my panel
Your wyze notifications throwing me off lol 😅i was like wait a minute, howcome I dont see the notification, rewound the video, and it was your phone lol
Welding with one of these on a wet spring day in front of your garage with a very old electrode holder or wet gloves changing electrodes. Anyone remember what happens?
I was charging my car battery with my 225 Lincoln welder and it started out doing okay then it started making a funny noise and it blowed the breaker I let it cool down I reset the breaker started again and it made a funny noise and then shut down😊
Make sure you put the spiders back in the right place!? You don't clean much do you? I learned some things about nob repair. The video is great. Also the audio. Good acoustic in the shed. Gr Reza ❤️
Yea I guess you're right, probably should of just thrown it to the road where it probably would have gotten scrapped and cleaned of those little spider webs
Nice fix. It is surprising how simple the inside of a tombstone is..half empty space and a fan. Now you have an excellent welder that will probably never die.
Arcing of contacts and wiper is prevented by turning off welder before switching amps.
Thank you kind person for the knowledge 😊

Sometimes things are so simple. Really, you just need not be welding to avoid arcing.
I do love that soft arc sound of a stick welder. Migs buzz sharply and tips almost squeal.

Hey, you forgot to put the grommet back in for the power cord!
Nice here's to the good old days when people actually repaired their stuff.

I was thinking that too, but maybe use a soft metal like brass so that between the 2, the detent fails and not aparatus
Problem is metal conducts electricity. Can't get shocked every time you grab the switch to change amperage.

CONGRATULATIONS, SHE RUNS LIKE NEW! 🇺🇸✌️👍
Since it is an AC welder, does it really matter which lead is ground? 🤔
Not one bit. The polarity is flip flopping 60 times a second on AC.
That was my first observation. Had to go through som comments to find someone saying what I thought was obvious.

Hello, I just got the same one but older, how to you remove the front knob?
Put dielectric grease on the contacts, that is a must for those.

Help, how do you transport an even bigger welder back home?

Could you please send apic of wiring diagram
Can you give me an idea of where I can order parts from. The white plastic piece on the inside for the selector dial broke.

Good job
No sound. You must have used the wrong monoral channel
Just replacing the broken part would have been easier.
Nice.
Thanks
When it doubt, take it apart lol
Faaaaaaaantastic!
I guess it didn't occur to you to clean-out the dusty cobwebs whilst you had the welder apart? Come-on MAN, you can do better than that...can't you?

Spiders have a right to live. Plus they eat insects.
