- A Salt Lake City man had a terrifying encounter with a cougar while hiking in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah... and he captured the confrontation on video. Jared Smith told FOX 13 he was hiking the Broads Fork Trail when the mountain lion suddenly appeared and followed him within 20-30 feet.

"I'm going away" (translation: I'm shitting my pants)
Running away=healthy food source! 😺
He sounds really terrified.. I would have already passed out I swear
@Rollo_Tomasi Ikr!
You’d be surprised what instincts you have when you’re in a situation of life and death.
same
Cougars love young males _amiright?_
come on bruh
He is bugging him by repeating the same thing. Even i am bugged.
Your statement is beside the point
brothu chill
The mountain lions on these Utah paths within the last year haven't been too shy around humans. I know it's 2 incidents of a cougar stalking someone, but that would make me extra cautious out there.
Apparently, there is a miscommunication here the man doesn't speak Cougarish
Lucky to escape in one piece. Someone suggested bending down to pick up rocks to throw at the mountain lion. Not a good idea, because you want to appear larger not smaller.
Why these people go into the woods without a fully loaded 10mm blows my mind 😂🤣🤣🤣
I bet you’re a tRump supporter
Wow, didn’t we have the exact same situation a year ago?
Yes about 20 miles south in a different canyon.
hell no lol, how did you all get out? did you all end up having to look big and loud or is that only for bears? lol
This is the kitten from last year
He doing what his mom did to the other giy
lol
Standing your ground would have to be super hard but might have been the better option it's almost like he's running away and it's chasing him like chasing a deer
That's what I'm saying. Stand your ground and make yourself as scary as possible.
The cougar was just gonna ask him about his car’s extended warranty
😆🤣😂
That’s very scary! If your ever in that situation slowly walk away and DONT TURN YOUR BACK
I have two questions...
1) is he going away?
2) is he going to bug you?
Plot twist. The cougar actually understood English but was playing a prank.
The cougar got bored with so many repetitions of phrases and decided to leave
KMFDM BROUGHT ME HERE
Guy is hyper ventilating sounding repetitive like a bunny and fearing the cat running from it like a prey animal.
Carry a gun people please this is the USA .
is he alive and safe?
This is definitely one of the most random KMFDM samples
I really find it hard to sympathize for people in these situations because it’s like they lack common sense if your involved in any outdoor activities weather you think it’s a harmless activity or not you need to be prepared for any wild animal. I live in a nice neighborhood 4 of my neighbors are state police officers but yet I still carry my gun to take out the trash or check the mail. Some might say it’s pointless to arm yourself when you taking out the trash and I agree however I would rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it
KMFDM brought me back here 🤣
The comments are what I like to see most in this type of video.🤣 I once came face to face with a cougar at night and it was tense.I had nothing to throw at it. Not even spray.
Liar
@@Firefly-trike Why is he a liar? I spooked one in brush near a loud creek in the Sierra Nevada about 3 weeks ago and luckily for me, it bounded over brush and was gone like nobody's business in about 3 seconds. I was lucky it was more scared than mad, very lucky.
Wow 😲
Come on man that mountain kitty only wants you to pet it.
So the end of the video is that where he trips on them rocks and falls down and the cat pounces?
Running from a big cat is the worst thing to do - it triggers their predator instincts. Instead, scream and stand your ground. Better, run towards it to make it think you are a predator.
Running towards it you probably become dinner. Just stand your ground and stretch your arms out make yourself appear larger and make loud noises.
@@rtentertainment9342 * I tried that in Kenya in 2019 but I was killed by 3 lions. Maybe I will have better luck next time.
Seems to me there is video missing.
This guy and the one from a year ago, pick up them rocks. Might be the same cat!
Stay strapped or get clapped...
Because shooting it dead would have been a better outcome than what happened here??
@@ytpete2 hes lucky he isn't dead.... worst case scenario better him than the mountain lion.
@@ytpete2 yes it would
@@ytpete2 here we go again. You guys are dense. The gun is a last resort. Nobody is saying we should shoot a cougar just because we see it.
He passed many good sized rocks, should have picked a couple up real quick while still keeping his head straight and one arm up, then start throwing the rocks and yelling really loud while putting both arms up! That was a close one 😮, or is the guy ok?
I feel like throwing a rock is what the last guy did to scare off a mountain lion that was stalking him last year.
Some kind of weapon is better than no weapon IMO I had encountered a pack of wolfs and my first instinct was to grab what ever leverage I could find laying around scary and dangerous but something is better than nothing
You don't bend down near a mountain
Mountain lion
he will hike any Utah land no more
And he never returned for another hike.
Was that the My Pillow guy
That is scary
He went away for sure
Average human not realising most animals are very easily intimadated if you don't run and scream:
Let's all be honest. How was recording that mountain lion going to help this guy stay alive? Unintelligent.
Yeah … but if it kept him facing forward, that was good! Often times people make the mistake of turning their back on an predator
When they find his decomposing corpse laying on his phone, they'll know what happened.
Don't pretend that you weren't entertained. He did not panic so he was intelligent.
@@pariacanyon I don't want people to put their lives in danger just so I can be entertained because I care about the well-being of others. His lack of panic was a result of his carelessness for his own safety. He put his own life on the line for social media fame and there is nothing intelligent about that.
well, the video should hold up as valid evidence in the court of law
Oh yeah right...that cat really understands your repeatedly saying..." I'm going away, I'm not going to bug you, I'm going away."
Should have carried bear mace and sprayed it with a heavy amount.
The only reason to carry a gun in the mountains.Your literay defenseless.I know your better chances of getting hit by lightning. But i have not seen a person get striked this year or the last year i can go on and on.
The lion didn’t give to craps abt what u was gonna do he was hungry
You are bugging me
always carry bear spray.
A Ruger LCR would have been comforting, a great extremely light weight, just in case trail gun.
*:-)*
The lion didn't attack because it spoke English! Open carry the next time.
a rock will stop them, just like it would a bear most of the time...acting scared and retreating backwards in fear is not very convincing you are not prey...
😂
kmfdm brought me here yall
I m glad wasn’t me! As a brazilian i write a bit of english! But it s hard make me understand when i speak english! The cougar would think “ what is this guy saying ? Are you kidding me ? I will finish you!
imagine if that was a 9 ft 900 lb sasquatch and backing into 2 more sasquatchs standing next to trail , "I'm going away "
They speak Catonese, not English
Strap is the key. ✌️
its asad experience
KMFDM
Yeah like Mountain Lion understand English
Probably because the phone in his hand ,he didn’t naturally load up with rocks ,I was attacked by a raging German Shepard as a teenager ,picked up the first thing I could ,2x4 nocked it completely cold ,
why german shepard attacked you?!
@@amazoner0cks he was basically a junkyard dog ,that was teased by kids ,and he got out ,and just hated people, and I was there working on my truck ,I had the 2x4 in the bed as I was a house framer ,a land shark !
Pretty dumb thing, it's an animal, talking to a beast in such a case it's a case of dementia.
People going out with a big hand gun are not to bright
People of Utah; Mountain Lions do not speak or understand English.
visual language and Noise. You need to speak their "language". Keep your audience in mind.
