    Was watching L.R.Bretz's video on breeding Celestial Pearl Danios and then DIY How to Breed Tetras, Danios, Rasboras and other Egg Scattering Freshwater Fish and he talked about how you did this!! So I typed it in and wah lah! I found you! Thank you for sharing!! Very amazing how smart and knowledgeable you all are! I love learning and seeing all the techniques that are used to breed fish and care for them!!! Thank you again for sharing!!! Loved the video!

    HeyTed, just came upon your video by accident and loved it. Very informative.you explain everything very well I have just gotten back into the hobby and want to breed some fish I have bred Angels in the past but find myself very intrigued by the many beautiful varieties of Tetras. I gave a thumbs up and subscribed to you! Going now to watch some more of your videos! Keep up the good work . I appreciate it. Martin in South Florida.

    Ted, Sounds like a lot of work but still a nice idea for a handy man like yourself.Why not just suspend the mess a couple of inches from the bottom a small tank.? Or just put a large amount of Java moss covering the tank bottom.After a day or two remove the group of adults.Or use a layer of marbles across the bottom of a tank again removing the adults after a couple of days. This is a very old idea used over 70 years ago by a well known Tetra breeder ..I've had some success with Rainbows using the Java moss idea.there is an old saying, "whatever works."I like your videos and have learned much from them so keep them coming.

      Hi Jules! I have used both methods with success, and with without success. Very small scatterers can often find their way around a piece of mesh placed in the bottom of a tank. When I have used a deep layer of moss or yarn on the bottom, the breeders are hard to catch without digging through the stuff, and they can eat the eegs.

      Ted,Thanks for the info., I'm always leaning from experts like yourself.. By the way your video discussing filtration, led me to switch to Stephan Tanner's SwissTropicals sponge filters, in all my 30 tanks.It has greatly minimized my maintenance time and the filters certainly will last a lifetime.

    Dude, awesome vid! I needed this in my life right now about to try to breed some tetras for the first time. If your ever in the Indianapolis area you should hit me up. I would love to give you a tour of my fish room over 100+ planted tanks soon to be closer to 150. I think you would appreciate it. I do have some vids of it on my channel.

    I understand that this is a year old video but I really enjoyed it. Thank you Ted. May I ask if you can make a video on how exactly you condition your egg scatterers to prepare them for breeding?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  6 лет назад +1

      I do not have any tanks up right now to make a video, but I can answer your question. Big species, like these barbs, stay in condition almost all the time if they are fed well with quality foods. They will lays eggs almost every day when in condition. Smaller species go in and out of condition, so I like to separate the males and females. I give the females a couple weeks of food that will not condition them (basic flakes, stay away from the live foods), and them give them a LOT of live food. When they are fat between feedings they are ready to go.

    Is the water pure RO or does it get reconstituted if not is the lack of KH result in significant ph swings and if so how does that impact on the fish health etc

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  8 лет назад

      I reconstitute all my RO back up to KH 1-2 using Seachem Equilibrium. pH swings in pure RO, when using a pH meter, are often false readings. Meters have a tough time with pure RO.

    great video, is this better then a spawningmop?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  7 лет назад +1

      Depends upon the species. This trap is not intended for fish that place adhesive eggs in plants (or yarn) like killifish or rainbow fish. Tetras and barbs scatter eggs that fall through plants to the bottom. Using this trap, those eggs will fall through to the outer tank so the breeders cannot eat them.

    • @vonksaqua3482

    Shouldn't you cycle the tank before adding the fish?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  6 лет назад +1

      Not necessarily for a spawning tank for egg scatterers. They will not be in there very long, and they are not fed. Any filter that I decide to put in for new fry would be cycled.

    Hi Ted. Is it possible to breed Denison barbs? How ?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  4 года назад

      They are being bred in large numbers commercially and I have met two hobbyists who have been successful. According to the hobbyists the three key factors were age/maturity (slow-maturing species), conditioning and having multiples of both sexes. When the fish were coming from the wild there were few females being exported. One of the many upsides of commercially-bred small/young barbs is that there are now a lot more females available. Spawning is in typical barb fashion... scattering eggs. Tank size is important so that there is room for the spawning groups to make their runs... like the Dawkinsia sp. barbs.

      I might try in the future

    What encourages them to just spawn?

    • @TedsFishroom
      @TedsFishroom  7 лет назад

      Being in good condition and having both sexes in the small space and a good spawning media over which to scatter the eggs will usually trigger the fish to breed.
