- Discover the world’s largest organism: Pando, an enormous and ancient quaking aspen, and find out how it became so huge.
--
The largest animal in the world is the blue whale, which weighs a massive 150 metric tons. Even so, it’s not remotely close to being the largest organism by weight. That title goes to an organism so huge that it’s estimated to weigh the equivalent of 40 blue whales. So what is this behemoth? And… where is it? Alex Rosenthal shares the story of the enormous and ancient Pando.

I have a cat named Panda and he is pretty large. Should've named him Pando.

@@dark_emperor9427 it's not that easy.

This video does a pretty good job explaining humans and their "need" for war.

War is what we're good for.
u guys know that the actual largest organism on earth is a mushroom that spans across an area 22.5 times larger than pando? Then again they are mushrooms and I assume they would be lighter than the trees so the trees may outweigh them but i dont know
One of those "sad but true" facts of life, very depressing

As a Utahan, one of my favorite things to do in the fall is to travel into the aspen forests and admire all of the beautiful leaves atop these tall slender trees. Fun Fact: The largest organism "by area" is Honey Fungus of Armillaria genus measuring 3.8 km across
The x files was a great show
The thing about fungi is that it’s just impossible to know if 2 mycelium threads far apart are parts of the same organism or seperate clones. Its just to much of a jumbled mess. So the question on if it’s just a large organism or a colony of clones could be answered with “does not apply”
And they are neighbours, actually Honey mushroom is not only larger but heaviest
@@JonGretarB Just asking, can that be clearly distinguished in case of aspens?
@@prasannank4274 well. Propably easyer to see if they are physically connected. But in one way you are applying animal definitions of individuals to something not animals. And a fact that not always is correct with animals as in, are siamese twins one organism or two?

I remember encountering a large patch of Aspens tree a few years back.
I vividly remember being creeped out how eerily smooth, pale, identical they all look.
Not to mention the surreal way they seem to be evenly space from each other.

Such beautiful music! What a shame that the credits of these videos never include the title of the music that was used. The credits say the composer is André Aires, but that doesn't help me find this specific piece. So frustrating!
Those teams of TED are really exciting
Not me reading the word organism as something else entirely.. 🤣
I watched a video about this 2 years ago. How could I forget.....
When I read the title, I was like, "it's either a fungus or an aspen" and I was right!
Ted very good way to learn
OG MinuteEarth viewers : _Hey, I've seen this one!_
Such a beautiful video. Thank you.
Interesting enough, there are a huge variety of ages for Pando, some even younger than the 80,000 years commonly cited. Portions of the Fish Lake Plateau on which Pando grows was glaciated during the last glacial period (it seems the Pando site remained unglaciated), so some estimates place Pando as being as young as 16,000 years old. It would not surprise me if Pando could have survived on the margins of an ice cap, given that Aspen trees have a largely boreal/subarctic/subalpine distribution.
Stuff You Should Know did an amazing episode on Pando! You would think an aspen tree forest would be boring but there’s such a crazy amount to learn about it!

The balance,its incredible...
Pando is perhaps the world's heaviest organism but it comes nowhere close to honey mushroom (a fungus found in Oregon) which is in fact the world's largest organism.

Oh yeah I found out about Pando in a nature museum there was this beautiful huge picture displayed with other amazing natural occurrences
The Aspens and fungus may soon be challenged for the largest single organism in the world.
“Researchers suggest a 77-square mile seagrass bed, once continuously connected by roots, is the world's largest-known organism. This hybrid of Poseidon's ribbon weed first sprouted 4,500 years ago and has since grown to dominate the floor of Sharks Bay on Australia's Western coast."
