- What gives opals their signature shimmering colors? Dig into the science of the gemstone’s formation, millions of years in the making.
--
In November 1986, Australian miners climbed Lunatic Hill and bored 20 meters into the Earth. They were rewarded with a fist-sized, record breaking gemstone, which they named the Hailey’s Comet opal. Thanks to a characteristic called “play of color,” no two opals look the same. So what causes these vibrant displays? Jeff Dekofsky digs into the rock’s shimmering, dancing displays of light.
Lesson by Jeff Dekofsky, directed by Ivana Bošnjak and Thomas Johnson.

The animation is just stunning.
Seems like the creator(s) used a lot of cacao and ground coffee, a lot!
Was just going to comment this. Seriously I feel like I've been transported into a magic school bus episode
honestly i disagree, the whole time i just wanted A SINGLE actual photo of the actual gem stone, the more they talked in the video about the beauty of the gems the more disappointing the video became.
Yess and with epic background music its next level
@@rbach2 same for me, the style is too bleak to show something as colorful as opal
The art is absolutely INSANE this vid, i can’t imagine how long this took to make

I wish we were taught about destructive and constructive interferences in such a beautiful manner. Your work reaches many minds and hearts. Keep up the good work❤❤
I agree, well put; what a beautiful manner of teaching
Do you think that colorful rocks speak colorful language?
Hue hue hue!

The animation in this video is really beautiful. The painted texture looks so good! Ted Ed, you have some of the best animators, keep it going animators and Ted ed
I'm your 100th liker here & bye.
For rock hounds on a budget: Labradorite also features multiple film interference leading to flashes of many colors, and it's a lot cheaper than precious opal.
"Guess where gold comes from - outer space"
Yeah well The earth is from outer space so I guess that makes sense.
No it doesn't...
@@shobitverma7826 True. We all know it was farted into existence within about a week.
@@custos3249I'm crying 😂😂😂😂😂😂
But where does outer space come from, and possibly more importantly, where is the gold in the rest of outer space and can I get it? 😁
Well Earth is currently IN outer space anyways. Just like a stone in a pond is inside the pond, while at the same time the pond is outside of the stone.
Ted ed animation is one of the best I know. Each video gets better and better!!
The animation made the gemstones look like mosaic glass and glow like mosaic glass. I LOVE IT, it features one thing about gemstones that i like and its ability to show color in such vibrant and different hues.

I don't understand , what do you mean actually?
I agree, you are a genius.
Can we just stop to appreciate the work that went into the animation? Good job, Ted-Ed!
I am a student in Turkey and love your videos. I can only imagine how hard it is to make these videos. But they surely are sharing knowledge. I can do nothing but support you people through comments since i am broke. Keep up the good work!
I love colored rocks
They really "rock"
pa dum tss
No, you’re supposed to say “rocks of color” now, not “colored rocks”. ;b
Ah
Absolutely beautiful animation and of course a great video too. Ted Ed explains things in a way that's easy to understand and you don't know how much I appreciate that. That's why I binge watch a ton of their videos. Seriously, I usually watch at least 10 sometimes more but they're short videos and full of information I didn't even know I wanted to know about. So, thank you Ted Ed. I'm so glad I found out about you and your videos.
It's been how long Ted Ed, 5 years. Man I remember watching all your riddle vids and being amazed and learning a lot. Thank you for the amazing part of my childhood

Fascinating stuff - I’ve never been super into gemology(?) but this makes me want to learn more. And the animation is downright gorgeous.
It doesn't matter what subject a Ted Ed video is about, they're all entertaining and informative. I love learning new things! Thank you, Ted Ed people!
“But this does put smile in my face”
the animation in this video is ever so beautiful, as well as the music! so entrancing!
5:26 the line is so amazing 🤩
Love how ted Ed puts so much effort and passion in their videos, the way they animate, the narration...etc...
"No two Ted ed videos look the same" but they are all as wonderful as the other
For people who didn't already know, this also means that if you could see more or fewer colors, then the interference you notice will look different(because we blend wavelengths together in our brain ) . So everything could look so completely different if we saw even just 1 or so more color.
The paint on glass animation in this is wonderful
can we just take a second to appreciate how beautiful this animation is 🥺♥️
TED-Ed and kurzgesagt are best channels on RUclips.
These vid just gets better and better! Learned half a year of geology right there
Who painted these gems?

This animation is marvelously hypnotic
Born an investor, always an investor.
I don't know who needs to hear this but stop saving all your money. Invest some of it if you want financial freedom.
Invest in Bitcoin, gold, silver, buy stock, forex market. Anything! Just invest and save yourself.
Good talk! I tell that to my friends everyday. Saving is good investing is much better, I used to think saving money would save me but NO, saving is just keeping it to spend later.
What if you don't know how to trade any of these?
I mean, I see your point. Some people have the money and are willing to invest but the problem is where to
Opals are amazing gems. Thank you for the update.
Oh my gosh the animation is incredible!

This is genuinely such a cool video, I found out about it cause I had to watch it for a science project for school!! It’s really well done and I love the detail in the animation!!
I have been watching Ted ed since last 3years it has been great source of knowledge . Probably I gained much knowledge in Ted than in high school. You utilise RUclips in two ways, either you can choose the productive part and the non productive part. For the productive part is the vast channels that provides a great source of knowledge
I love opals. I bought myself an Australian opal ring while I was there a few years ago, as my one and only souvenir.
Wonderful animation and most fitting to what is being spoken of.
The animation and the way you say the information is amazing. This is really good.

Also, perhaps the most stunning opal there is... galaxy opal. It is beyond phenomenal.
