He's used to playing an instrument and so he does have an advantage. Even so, trumpet is not easy. I'm very impressed with how fast he picked it up. I, myself am learning to play the trumpet. I took to it pretty good. I started out learning sight singing and music theory because I want to sing in an advanced choir. Three years later, I got the urge to also learn the trumpet because I felt that the choir director will take me more seriously if I also played an instrument. It's quite challenging and it requires a lot of my time. I try to practice an hour to two hours daily of sight singing and trumpet. I absolutely love it!
@@angelamwatts Yeah he does have some experience, but he did really great i have to say. Allsow good luck with your trumpet! It truly is an amazing instrument and its worth every minute of pratice
@@Hannespre Thank you. The great thing about the trumpet is it really strengthens your core muscles. I'm hoping to get good enough to play at Sunday mass.
Thanks!!! This was great. I played trumpet in grade school, played flute in my 20’s, picked the trumpet back up in my late 30’s, was messing around with a tenor sax when I was 40 and my wife told me to sell my trumpet and buy a sax, I did, a mark VII, been playing the sax for the last 30 years. I’ve always been self taught, play by ear, but I just got the itch for trumpet again so I bought one. So at 70, here goes!!! Loved your honesty!!!
Tip: the videos will mislead. You’re not supposed to buzz directly into the horn, you’re supposed to have a tight embouchure. Basically, you know when your embouchure is correct when you blow a constant stream of air into the mouthpiece but begin to buzz with the resistance of the horn on the mouthpiece.
8 days??? That's great! You are always so hard on yourself. I play with a guy who plays alto sax and tuba. He plays both at a high level. You should consider continuing on both.
During school I had an hour on bari sax then directly after an hour on tuba. I started tuba last year and could play it well enough for a concert in a few months with only less than a hour a day. I also learned bass clarinet for a musical this past year. That was interesting, I showed up for the audition on tenor sax(also one I don't play normally) and no one was playing it so I said I could. I was playing like once or twice a week for only a few hours but I learned it well enough for the performances. The embouchures are so different:/ Luckily next years musicals both have bari sax parts (My main instrument.) edit: I got in on both tenor and bass clarinet for the musical I was in. It's also very hard for me to practice at home because I play very large instruments and have a lack of time:/
I love dragging both my bass clarinet and tenor saxophone to or from school at the same time 😭 I've done it before (only when getting a drive), but I plan ahead so I don't have to yet still can practice. I play tenor in jazz, and bass clarinet in concert band!
@kiytheghost371 Yeah, Bb is automatically what I default to. I started on Bb clarinet before switching to bass clarinet, and it's pretty much the same, so I can still play Bb clarinet, I just don't play it often. I can transpose between Bb and concert pitch, but I only know that for Eb, it's 3½ tones up from concert pitch? I think? All I remember is Bb is G, so that's all I remember.
I find it so impressive that they learned an incredible amount and made so much progress in 7 days. The piece played on the 8th day was incredible to knowing little to nothing on the 1st day.
I play several instruments and bought a trumpet years ago. I gave it up because every time I would practice trumpet, my flute embouchure was worse. This never happened between sax and flute.
hahahahaa and of course I love it!:) Carmine Caruso was an alto sax player/teacher. He wrote the Carmine Method for brass. A lot of things transpose between instruments. Hopefully you now know, the trumpet can hurt a little:) Well done!
This is very impressive for 7 days! There is a «trick» for getting the «buzz» that works for almost 100% of people that have never tried a brass instrument before: Put the tip of your thumb in your mouth and close the lip around it, then «spit» the thumb out and the lips should be making a buzz for most people. After doing that it should be easy to recognize and replicate, and then transfer that to the mouthpiece and instrument. :)
Mannn thank you! Definitely not built to be a trumpet player though, I haven’t touched one since this vid!😂 definitely made me respect brass players more!!
Just a helpful tip, as a trumpet player myself as you go down the note register try using slower hotter air and gradually relaxing your embrochure more
I play the trombone so my first time trying trumpet was easy. I just didn't know the notes. Can't imagine how hard it would be to learn from woodwind to brass though.
Actually isn’t that bad to be honest. I play alto and trumpet, hardest thing about trumpet is really jus learning how to get that breath going. The chops and music knowledge were already there, and the notes were pretty easy. But to consistently get that air going is petty hard, while also increasing or decreasing air speed
Those keen eye trumpeters out there will notice little red ring on the upper lip. :) A common thing I see in beginners, usually means pulling back trying to force the notes. I think that is why a lot of people say to only rest the pinky on top instead of hooking it so it is harder to pull back into the notes.
You did that way faster than it took me to learn flute from Sax I think it took me 20 days to make consistent sound from the flute. Great job and fun video.
Great progress!! But the real question here is... Are you going to add trumpet to your covers when you feel secure about your playing?? Or It was just an experiment for fun??
I'd go for 30 days and see how you do. Drums, violin or cello, or trombone would be great! Clarinet is the same fingerings as sax so that would be a breeze.
For 7 days you did a great job especially coming from a woodwind instrument! It took me 2 weeks just to get a noise out of my trumpet because I started out on tube and the embechure is so efferent anyways I think you did great!
A little late to the video, but as a fellow college saxophonist who picked up the trumpet I have two tips 1) Arban’s conservatory method was a great book. 2) Blow the air towards the top of the mouthpiece to get the higher notes. It automatically thins your airstream.
Bass clarinet is fun! The range is so much larger than saxophones (low Eb below the staff up to high G above the staff (Db and F concert pitch)). I hate that the tenor saxophone only goes down to Bb (Ab concert pitch), I want the low notes 😭 Especially for the arrangement of blue monk we play in class. It's in Bb concert, so the triplet then dropping down an octave I can't do because it's the low G. I could try playing it an octave up, but then I'd have to play altissimo notes, which I haven't practiced much on tenor. Though tenor cuts through the band better! Also today I played tenor madness with others for the first time in a while (we played it last year in class and decided to resurrect the tunes we played last year by playing them at lunch). I need to start working on expanding my range again, I didn't play enough over the summer so I lost some of my range (I lost altissimo on bass clarinet, though I can still reach it just not as easily). I got my tenor from my teacher about a year ago, the biggest difference I found from the bass clarinet was the embrochure. It wasn't a huge difference, but I found it annoying. The fingerings are very similar, just more pinky keys on clarinets!
Finally someone understands how hard trumpet is lol. But also not sure if moving the mouthpiece to the side of your lips is bad technique but my band director called me out for it after i developed that bad habit.
I'm revisiting the trumpet after 53 years. As you can imagine, I've lost the lips. I was an instrumental music major in college but thus far, you sound at least as good as me.😊❤
Both Oboe and Bass Clarinet have a more "open" embouchure, similar to saxophone. I think those would be a piece of cake for you. Oboe and Sax fingerings are incredibly similar. I bet you would rock a baritone/euphonium. It has all the same concepts/technique of trumpet, but with an octave lower in range, your lips don't have to buzz as high as on trumpet. Most people find a trombone/baritone/euphonium buzz to be very natural.
I’d recommend getting a towel of some sort to let your spit out from the trumpet. It sound foul but it works. Also I heard that there was some crackling on your notes due to build up of spit, so get rid of the spit from the trumpet more frequently. It’s sounding great for your first days 😮 Hope you keep playing!
Nice video, and good on you for the effort and accomplishment! BTW, when you showed the mouthpiece (Shilke 13A4A), I remembered my playing days when occasionally trying a similar mouthpiece, and how that would have been the exact wrong thing for me to have tried when starting out, lol!

You got it exactly right: the main problem is that even if you want to, you can't really practice all day long :( If you continued for a couple more weeks you'd have reached the point where the lips start to accumulate fatigue, your playing worsens, and it destroys your mental fortitude xD Amazing job with the fingering. Made it look so easy (which it is, but I play the trumpet and I wanna moan about it)

Just foiund this channel. Love it. Go check out Ira Sullivan. Reeds, flutes and Trumpet all at one gig wtih Red Rodney on the other trumpet. Seriously amazing players. Used to see them at the King of France Tavern in Annapolis in the early 80s

You did really well for 7 days with trumpet. Try percussion (snare drum) - you will need to learn some basic rudiments and could try your hand at some trap set? You just need to have some coordination and be good at reading rhythms to start. Just a thought.
I play baritone bc and I have 5 different notes with no fingers down. Vary frustrating because if you are playing in the high area and out of nowhere the lowest note possible (in the tuba high range)
Starting on a jazz lead mouthpiece probably didn't make things easy. Once your embouchure has developed, that type of mouthpiece is well suited to playing in the upper register for extended periods of time. Until then, a smaller diameter mouthpiece with a deeper cup (such as a Bach 5c) would be beneficial.
Yeah when I first transition to the trumpet from the saxophone that was very different. I noticed with the trumpet you just can't play a lot because your lips swell .
Pretty impressive for 8 days. lol. I bet if you played for a year your embouchure would improve greatly and you would be able to slot notes. You are already a very impressive musician that can improvise anything, so jazz trumpet would be a great addition. Plus you could buy mine as I no longer play. 25 years down the drain and free from the torture of the horn. Reeeee.. lol.
I play trumpet and trombone but trumpet is my main instrument I am thinking about starting to learn sax so do you have any tips or just which one should I play alto or tenor
Got a closer look. It's a Schilke 13 A4a, which is more suited for big band. Still, better than starting on a 7c (which is the default mouthpiece that comes with pretty much every trumpet). The Schilke numbering system works differently than the Bach system. With Bach, the diameter increases as the numbers get lower. Schilke does the opposite. A 13 on a Schilke is roughly the same diameter as a Bach 1 1/2 C. A4a refers to the cup depth, rim shape, and throat of the mouthpiece. I don't remember exactly which one corresponds to which number, but the rim is flat (distributes pressure more evenly for better endurance, but reduces accuracy), the cup is shallow (helps compress air more for playing in the upper register), and the throat is small (again, helps with the upper register).
Im “learning” the trumpet right now as a flute player (mainly because i am gonna get a french horn soon and i only have a trumpet so im just learning it for fun i guess lol) Its going uhhhhhhhhh… i mean i can play marry had a little lamb so BOOYA
Are you planning on continue playing the trumpet in like a little series or something? Bc I think if you just get some small advices from a trumpet player you will progress so much faster. (For example simply oiling your valves the richtige way would have given you better results at the end, I swear 😊) Nevertheless the results after just one week are pretty amazing. I think every teacher would be grateful to have a student playing that piece of music after learning the instrument for just a few days 😅
That little solo on the 8th day was extremely impressive

Man you really went with hard mode starting on that mouthpiece.
Gotta love the break with John Coltrane lol
I play baritone bc and I have 5 different notes with no fingers down. Vary frustrating because if you are playing in the high area and out of nowhere the lowest note possible (in the tuba high range)
He dropped the video
As a fellow sax player I also would like to know where the reed is.
That solo went kinda crazy
Pretty impressive for 8 days. lol. I bet if you played for a year your embouchure would improve greatly and you would be able to slot notes. You are already a very impressive musician that can improvise anything, so jazz trumpet would be a great addition. Plus you could buy mine as I no longer play. 25 years down the drain and free from the torture of the horn. Reeeee.. lol.
You could do flute I think it’s the easiest instrument to learn and it has similar fingerings to sax, the only difference is the c and f#
I play trumpet and trombone but trumpet is my main instrument I am thinking about starting to learn sax so do you have any tips or just which one should I play alto or tenor
those licks in the solo were crazy
I play trumpet and you are doing good 😅
Nice u kept at it id keep playing more after that
Sounds like trombone champ 🤣
Why did this vid pop up in my feed now? That was fun to watch! Have you tried the trumpet since than?
Thank you! And luckily no😂
Bro he started this challenge an my bday lol loved the vid😄
What’s the background music?
You should try a double reed or slide whistle next lol
LOL I should 😂
You kick the slide out on anything that uses the third valve (d, c#, g)
Lol you progress very slowly. I don't know, it just sounded like me on my 4th day. Wish I posted stuff.
You should post stuff:)
When he showed the case and showed all the torn up mutes it made me want to throw my trumpet 🎺 away but good job you did well especially for 7 days
Something I can say that could really help you get better is using the Chicowitz flow studies
Let’s go frankie 😏
Ayyyy thanks Armin and thanks for encouraging me to make this video 🥺🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@FoolishFrankie 😄
Whats the name of the solo at the end?
Very impressive for 8 days and i also play the same mouthpiece
Very inspiring !!
Were you using a C7 mouthpiece? When I first started learning a few months ago I had to use C7
The mouthpiece looked like a Schilke mouthpiece to me. They use a different numbering system.
Sounds like sax to me ? 2:30
At first you sounded like kids in my band class playing trumpet “we’re on week 12”
Video had me absolutely cackling with the edits
Wow if has been a long time seeing u and you already do a face reveal cool keep up the good work
Hey thanks so much!!
Suuuper cooool!
(For example simply oiling your valves the richtige way would have given you better results at the end, I swear 😊)
Nevertheless the results after just one week are pretty amazing. I think every teacher would be grateful to have a student playing that piece of music after learning the instrument for just a few days 😅
I definitely have no desire to actually learn the trumpet unfortunately :/
