Fantastic news! My very first trumpet student ever was an 80 year old beginner, who spent his whole life playing polkas on the drums. At least you have some brass playing experience. Good luck, keep in touch on the progress!

Long time guitar player, first time brass player. THIS is the video that got me that early success I needed to power through the wonky wailing walrus that was my first attempts!
I got the busing well and before I watched this I found it pretty nice to just do a long buzz and press on the notes randomly. It helped show me what sound the notes made and what note they were. Also great video helped A LOT!
Awesome guide! 😊 After two years of trying to learn to play the trumpet myself, I finally got a trumpet teacher! This guide is useful to watch in between sessions. BTW: Love the 05:10 segment! 😂😂😂 I laughed so hard! 😂
At 63 years old I just this minute played my first correct notes on a trumpet! Tried in high school but switched to flute in frustration. I am taking tenor sax lessons now. But still have a desire to learn other things. Thank you for making this video! BTW: The horn I'm messing with is a C.G.CONN 22B circa 1951 with a Bach 10C mouthpiece I found at the flea market. I can't get at the serial number to look up the exact year of manufacture because it has a custom leather cover over the valve bodies. I don't want to mess with that. I have a cornet that has an exactly identical bell engraving with a serial number that is from 1951. So I figured this horn must be close.
I've been playing trumpet for some time, and I decided to randomly search up how to play and I wished I saw this video 6 years ago when I started, its so helpful.
Adam, I am 46. Picked up a trumpet. Fell in love… found your video and it was like reading the first line of my favorite book. You are an excellent teacher and I am glad you took a minute to share your insights with the world. I will watch this video over and over. Subscribed.
Thank you! Your instruction really helped me get some decent sounds out of my new trumpet. Trumpet is my new pandemic stay at home hobby. I played flute back in high school and still play a bit for fun, but I always wanted to try trumpet.
I’m a saxophone player, and have been hoping to pick up trumpet for a while now. Got it for Christmas. No one told me it would be this hard! This video helped me get out CONSISTENT notes, god forbid. Thanks a ton! :D
Awesome . Thank you so much all the way from India . This gave me much needed practical clarity as I just started to play trumpet few days back with basic notes.
32 year old here, picked up trumpet on a whim. So you DON'T buzz your lips?! Everything I thought I knew was a lie. This is a fantastic video, thank you.
Ha! Well…we still say “buzz the mouthpiece” and “buzz the lips” but technically, that’s not what’s happening inside the mouthpiece. I think understanding this can really help new trumpeters make a better sound on the horn!
Your instructions are very clear! Thank you for the great videos. My son is just starting and can already get some great sounding notes out just from watching your videos. You are a great teacher!
Thank you so much for this video!!! Started playing trumpet yesterday and couldn't figure out how to okay WITHOUT lip buzz!! Buzzing made my lips feel scoured!! I tried your technique tonight just using my mouthpiece and it worked!! Looking forward to trying it when my landlady leaves again!
Nice! It is a bit different when you only use the mouthpiece. The instrument actually makes the buzz feeling happen even easier. Good luck! (Try playing in to a pillow to mute the sound of the horn if you have neighbors that don't like the noise!)
I bought myself a pocket trumpet to try something new in life after years of playing the guitar.I am 52 and almost toothless after a hard life and started blowing rasberries down the trumpet tube and then i came across this video where you describe doing a sort of mmm thing, great advice,i am making a little bit of progress b3cause of it thanks!
Thank you so much! I'm a percussionist so whenever it came to trumpet I was always told that you have to buzz into the mouthpiece so I would always try to execute the buzz into the mouthpiece instead of letting the mouthpiece make the buzz happen and now I finally have some consistency.
By FAR the best introduction to trumpet I've come across. So simple the way Adam explains it. I literally just picked up the trumpet, reviewed this video a couple of times, and I was able to play a couple of tunes using just the five notes explained here. Sure, I messed up a lot, but this is why we practice.
This is great! I’ve seen some great players insist that we’re supposed to “buzz” into it to play. I’m just starting and am having trouble with consistent tone. I’ll focus less on the buzz next session. TY
Thank you I am currently a French horn player and I just got a trumpet so I can learn it a tryout for jazzband and do marching band in highschool thank you a lot please make more
I played French horn for decades - major symphony at age 22... Well, I moved on to other things in life and hadn't played a brass instrument in about 13 years. I realized that I REALLY missed playing a brass instrument, so what to do? I had an incredible range on French horn, so I said to myself, "Self, I want to play cornet!!" A year of Bb cornet (which I adore), I decided to get a trumpet. I got a very nice B&S Challenger II Bb silver trumpet (I liked the response and 'fatness' of the sound more than any Bach Strad models - a personal thing, for sure!) 2.7 years later, I have a great coach and am totally loving trumpet. TRUMPET!!!! YEAH!!!!
Good luck!! Biggest thing is that you focus on tone production first. Just play long notes every day for a while before trying to do much else. Everythint will be easier if you can make a consistent sound on notes from middle G up to C in the staff, and middle G down to C below the staff. I have a “second five notes” video that goes up to that C in the staff you can check out on my channel!

Thank you! The trumpet is in the key of Bb, which means C on the trumpet, is Bb on the piano 🤯 - so if you’re looking at music in concert pitch (the key of piano), you have to read the notes up one whole step. The general rule is to read up a whole step, and add two sharps to the key signature. So the key of C (no sharps, no flats) in concert pitch, would become the key of D (two sharps) on the trumpet.
