  • Charlie Becker was the dwarf actor who played the Mayor of Munchkin City in the classic Hollywood movie, "Wizard of Oz." He is buried in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward, a portion of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to the gravesite, tells you a little bit about Charlie and his actress wife, as well as show you the grave of William Dutton Hayward, the founder of Hayward and the final resting place of Robert McDonald, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who faced off with Crazy Horse at Wolf Mountain, Montana on Jan. 8, 1877.

Soooo cool. I was fortunate enough to be in the Music Circus production of The Wizard of Oz in Sacrament in 1981 with Kathy Rigby starting as Dorothy. And I got to be both the Mayor of the Munchkin City AND a Flying Monkey. Such a seminal film that will always have a special place in both my nightmares and my heart!

Growing up in Hollywood with family working in the industry I'm always interested in how supporting actors supported themselves outside of acting. They didn't earn enough acting so they usually had side gigs. Margaret Hamilton worked in film and TV before and after WofOz. Though she was a teacher early on, she later worked in TV. You can see her as the neighbor in One Day at a Time and other sitcoms.

I visited two other munchkins on my road trip last year that I still haven’t edited and shared. I’m hoping to make a trip back up to Sacramento this spring to visit my brother. I also have a cousin in Fresno I want to visit. If I’m able to make the trip I will let you know. It would be fun to do a collaboration video together if possible. I’m turning 70 years old this year, so I’ve decided to cut way back on visiting gravesites in the future, but I’m sure I will occasionally go grave hunting. Mostly though I think it’s time for me to start enjoying my retirement while I am still 6 feet above ground, rather than spending all my time filming and editing videos lol. 😂

(perhaps you have covered this topic as well) however if I remember correctly I was able to gain access to his grave behind a usually "locked gate"!
At the age of 65 I still watch the Wizard of Oz on different formats altho quite a difference today with modern technology as what it was like gathered with my 4 siblings around a small B & W tv......that was in the 60s.

Unintentional laughter from me this morning. Every time you say he was 3 foot 9, in my head I keep filling it in with a lyric by Joe C who was also little person who used to sing with Kid Rock. Joe C was 3 foot 9 and anybody who was around when Kid Rock first made it big probably knows the rest.

Thanks again Jeff and Sarah for another great video.. You mentioned the cavorting the Munchkin actors did behind the scenes. This activity is the background for the 1980s Chevy Chase movie Under the Rainbow .

This may seem strange but the monkeys weren't as creepy to me as the tornado was, very ominous coming towards the farmhouse. Another interesting cemetery.
    Thanks, Jeff & Sarah

Oh yeah a real tornado would be very frightening! Thanks for your nice comment!!

MGM took their special effects to the next level. Crew members mention this especially with the tornado where they put extra money and thought into it. Look at Warner Bros Special effects of the same period,, kinda hoaky in comparison,, but worked nonetheless.

Thank you so much for paying homage to Charlie Becker and his wife. It was great to learn his story. Yes, I saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time when I was only 5, and, like you, I was totally creeped out by the flying monkeys.
