First and foremost above everything else, Jonah Lomu was a beautiful human being. If you ever had the privilege to meet him in person he treated anyone like they were the most important person in the World! So true. Met him once with my daughter, and that's exactly how he made her feel. One of the saddest video clips you can watch is his meeting with Joost van der Westhuizen shortly before the two of them died.
That is 100% facts. Met Jonah in 2003 at a bodybuilding event in Wellington and he shook my hand and talked to me like we were good mates haha he is by far my favorite player along with good mate Jerry Collins🙏🏾
Saffa here...Some awe inspiring players to have come (and will be) coming from the land of the silver cloud....My personal favourites. Christian Cullen, Carlos Spencer and Ardie Savea.
Scary to think that Lomu achieved all these feats whilst never being fully fit (doctors said he probably has been suffering kidney issues for some time). RUgby's first global star, but also to be in talks with an NFL team in those days was something unheard of. Just wished he was still around, but nonetheless, his legacy will never die and will always be remembered.

The wingers today either have size & not a wingers pure speed or they’re fast but lack in size & power. Jonah had it all, fastest over 10metres, his footwork was underrated too, the in & out to stun the defender, his sidestep covers 2 metres & also just the balance & ability of staying up while running on the side, fending off defenders. Not just for New Zealand but the greatest winger in the world who ever laced the boots in my opinion.
I always love listening to the commentary on Jonah's games. Every commentator got so worked up, they couldn't help the overspill into ManFandom. The English commentators are superb, and often just totally lost for words. Jonah was the finest example of what Man can achieve, and this was so much a part of his adoration. Jonah Lomu is one of the reasons rugby turned professional in late 1995. His legendary performances at the RWC in SA convinced media moguls like Rupert Murdoch that pay tv could make billions of dollars showing live rugby all over the world with stars like Lomu.
1:42 Laurie reckons he wasn’t gonna get a lot bigger or tougher than other international loose forwards 😂😂 in 94 he already proved that was bullshit, in John Kirwans tribute game playing blindside flanker he scored a hat trick against the Aussie Babas running through Willie OFanengaue, Steve Tuynman and Toutai Kefu. He’s run through Abdel Benazzi, Tim Rodber, Ben Clarke, Ruben Kruger, Teichman, Corne Krige, Andre Venter, Owen Finegan the biggest International loose forwards around. I reckon he would’ve been more devastating as a loose forward able to pop up where wanted to instead of waiting for the ball out on the edges.
Christiaan Cullen by far the best nr 15 ever. He was just magical when he started running and you knew he was going to score some great tries. From a South African I definitely agree that Christian Cullen was by far the best number 15 ever.
I was at the Hong Kong Sevens with my brother in law and after a match we went down onto the field to take a photo between the posts... a (big) guy was walking by and so I asked him if he could take a photo of myself and my friend... He was a great guy and "scrummed down with us". Sadly the photos are lost in antiquity, changing countries and what not, but the memories are still good.
Yeah my heart is torn between BG and JK as I saw them both play on the right wing for the ABs and BG was my first AB hero! In SA in 1970 was unbelievable. His side-step and speed was phenomenal and sat there in disbelief that once he got to the try line he would try to score under the goalpost side-stepping 3 defenders to get there - incredible! BUT BG was never the same player after that as he never prepared himself like in did in 1970 and seemed a bit heavier therefore lost his speed! JK was phenomenal! Going to Eden park and seeing him score 80m-90m tries was the most amazing thing anyone saw! He was big at 6"3 and trained hard! He did not have out-in-out speed but he trained hard for speed with athletics sprint training and could side-step, decoy side-step and in-and-out on you with a swerve! The thing about JK was that he hated losing and was an integral part of one the best All Black teams of all time 1987-1990 and part of that Auckland team 1985-1993! For me I would go with JK!
As a reflection of the unbelievable quality available, it's surreal that players as good as JK and Goldie didn't make the final cut....both proper legends in their own right.
He never scored a try against south africa..for a reason...most dangerous player to walk the world. They watch him like a hawk...as a south african..he is the best winger the world have ever seen.

Fk no. Even as a Kiwi I know this to be bullshit. Zero kick game (guess he didn't really need one), bad defender, and was poor at linking with his support. A literal one trick pony. Never won a world cup. Never scored a try against South Africa.
When one of the greatest ABs in Richie McCaw says Jonah was hard to tackle when Jonah was only operating at 60 or 70 percent (of his true potential due to his kidney condition).....I can only imagine what we could have been witness with a 100 percent healthy Jonah.
Cullens my hero I’m Welsh , so had the likes of JPR to look up to but Cullen and I are exactly the same size and weight which was so much more impressive
that's how great Jonah is.. any player that stops him with a good tackle becomes famous.. any team that held him scoreless will treasure that forever lol.
Had Rugby gone professional in the mid to late 80s early 1990s JK would have been Rugbys first global superstar... He was treated like royalty in Japan, Italy,France basically europe...but Jonah can proudly claim that mantle...
Still think Jonah would’ve been more devastating at No 8 or 6 as he proved in the 94 no babaz vs aus babaz where scored a hat trick up against Willie Ofahemgaue, Toutai Kefu, Tim Gavin.
Doubt it… you look at forwards like Ox or Botha and they were bigger than him… he would lose his advantage. His advantage was that he could move fast for his size.
And John Kirwan..when Rocky 4 came out, so did the inside outside move.. Everybody started practicing it, Campese's goose step. How bout this JK & BGWilliams & Jonah off the bench?
Man was a freak power speed and Brains what a player ,,Well never see another Jonah again what a player Briliant monster sad loss to Rugby I feel sorry for people trying to stop him doing million miles per hour ❤️❤️😃👍👍👍🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺
What John Hart said about Lomu is so true...come to think about it its crazy that Lomu did all that whilst carrying his kidney issues and nit being a full strength
H e never scored against the Boks, because almost the whole outside backs of the boks were committed to tackling Lomu leaving about 4 players overlap in wilson, cullen, alatini, ieremia etc to score untouched
The great tragedy of Jonah Lomu was that he continued playing after he developed interstitial 5:20 nephritis. That should have been the end of his career but he was allowed to continue playing even after receiving a kidney transplant. Don’t know where the medical profession were but they failed him miserably
he WAS a nice man, watched him first to clap and congratulate Eales when NZ lost the Bledisloe, however he was rotten on defence, had no clue, alright when the team was going fwds, I never rated him as anywhere near the best
First to say that Jonah was a monster player, but rate him as the best ever? No I disagree! The biggest mistake the AB made was to build their game around Jonah! Rugby is a 15 man game!

R.I.P to the greatest winger to ever live
Best Rugby dynamic duo in my opinion were Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen!
I will never forgive John Hart for messing up that backline in 99' . I was down for 6 weeks emotionally after that French game 😆
France were great in that game. I watched from my prison cell in Mt Eden which made it a thousand times worse 😂
@@rikimackey7984 and that's a privilege that today you are here commenting about it. That's life 😃 😊
When one of the greatest ABs in Richie McCaw says Jonah was hard to tackle when Jonah was only operating at 60 or 70 percent (of his true potential due to his kidney condition).....I can only imagine what we could have been witness with a 100 percent healthy Jonah.
That's a fallacy. Earlier on he was near 100 % The sickness only affected him later.
Cullens my hero I’m Welsh , so had the likes of JPR to look up to but Cullen and I are exactly the same size and weight which was so much more impressive
Great Player . Just a pitty he could not score a try against South Africa ??????????
that's how great Jonah is.. any player that stops him with a good tackle becomes famous.. any team that held him scoreless will treasure that forever lol.
Smarts. Saf so hell bent on defending him that we unleashed *Cullen.*
And he scored *plenty!*
What about *12 or 13?* Ahhhhh 😍😍😍😍
Doubt it… you look at forwards like Ox or Botha and they were bigger than him… he would lose his advantage. His advantage was that he could move fast for his size.
And John Kirwan..when Rocky 4 came out, so did the inside outside move.. Everybody started practicing it, Campese's goose step. How bout this JK & BGWilliams & Jonah off the bench?
John Kirwan for right wing
Remember he ran through whole teams!
First World Cup, it was against Italy and it was right from kick off 👌
Man was a freak power speed and Brains what a player ,,Well never see another Jonah again what a player Briliant monster sad loss to Rugby I feel sorry for people trying to stop him doing million miles per hour ❤️❤️😃👍👍👍🦘🇦🇺🇦🇺
What about Grant batty stu Wilson Bernie Fraser that must have been in the mix
“We never saw him at his peak”
Cullen. #1 pick for Greatest XV every time.
NZ maybe but all time many still go for Serge Blanco
What John Hart said about Lomu is so true...come to think about it its crazy that Lomu did all that whilst carrying his kidney issues and nit being a full strength
Jeff was magic himself
I just loved his joy
Is it me or does the guy at 01:54 have 4 fingers
Jerry Collins, would have been my choice at #8, christian cullen at #15, K.Mealamu at #2,
Probably the best winger in any code, ever
He was a great runner but skill deficient. I believe the greatest should be an alrounder.
His stats say otherwise
@@JaemanEdwards FK his stats, he was almost unstoppable
The boys had his back I'll say that!
Did he ever score against South Africa?? idk
Legend of the game!!
He never scored against the Boks .
H e never scored against the Boks, because almost the whole outside backs of the boks were committed to tackling Lomu leaving about 4 players overlap in wilson, cullen, alatini, ieremia etc to score untouched
You. Should. Talk. To. Our. All. Blacks. And. France. This. Rugby. World. Cup. Is. Very. Important.
All pacific islanders. Lomu is Tongan, BeeGee William is Samoan, Christian Cullen mother is full Samoan.
Well Cullen must've been the whitest pacific islander I've ever seen I think then.
Always about race with you people..
What’s your point?? Btw if you’re going to touch on ethnicity do it right!! Bee Gee is Cook Island/Samoan!! 🤪
@@jonnyblaze1164 it’s ethnicity not race!! Get it right!! Race you’re referring to is the “human race!”!! 🤪
@@yoe91 Dylan Papaalii
Well James Small stopped him in his tracks in the 1995 world cup game that SA won
The great tragedy of Jonah Lomu was that he continued playing after he developed interstitial 5:20 nephritis. That should have been the end of his career but he was allowed to continue playing even after receiving a kidney transplant. Don’t know where the medical profession were but they failed him miserably
They were there and know more about it than you
well right wing, jeff wilson............no disrespect to the great brian williams............but jeff...the best right winger we ever had...cheers
Tana Umaga would be on my wing i need his defense and his line runs
Think this title should be changed to how lomu became the greatest left wing of all time.....absolute legend the Maradona of rugby r.i.p
Doug Howlett.. Jeff Wilson or JK at 14 imo…
Ben Smith, Conrad Smith, & Aron Smith are the best AB’s
Richie talks about getting in low and then his first time playing him, he goes high both times lol
Jeff Wilson is a legend
he WAS a nice man, watched him first to clap and congratulate Eales when NZ lost the Bledisloe, however he was rotten on defence, had no clue, alright when the team was going fwds, I never rated him as anywhere near the best
First to say that Jonah was a monster player, but rate him as the best ever? No I disagree! The biggest mistake the AB made was to build their game around Jonah! Rugby is a 15 man game!
@@antoniovt1366 no Jonah just made everything easy.
Jonah Lomu.... 😔😔😔😔💔💔💔💔
