Got into rugby in 91, watched this guy lead us to 3 grand slams, a world cup final, memorable wins over all blacks, australia and the boks. Cannot underestimate what Carling did for English rugby.
I'm a kiwi 52yrs I remember you for sure up amongst the best in the world in your error cheers for the memories it hurt badly loosing to England the most in all honesty last WC was just as bad but we will exact our revenge as always haha all the best even though you caused NZ much suffering in your day thats what made you one of the best players in the world that is set in history awesome respects
So good,Will was from one of ,if not the best English teams, full of mercurial stars,as an ABs fan,i love the games between England and the ABs,respect to Will.
@@cp2291 Jonah was in a street gang before he got into rugby. He mentions it in his auto biography. He used to love getting into fights and bashing people but then rugby changed him
Really well put together.....and you come across so well Will...a proper rugby man. Love the story about your youngest not believing you played for England!
The story about Will's sons asking if he really played for England gave me a giggle. This guy was one of my rugby heroes growing up (both as a Quin and an England player). Superb video.
Captured the interaction with Frank Bunce perfectly - kiwi head and eyebrows up vs English nod. Having lived in both countries for a long time I recognised both gestures immediately. Appreciate such a passionate and honest storytelling.
Carling and his team gave England back their self respect. And his comment is bang on. Everyone else can show pride in playing for their country but when the English do it, it is seen as arrogance .
I think you have to remember that there's a) media framing of any captain's responses and b) you're looking at a vast amount of countries that all look at England with a slightly jaundiced eye due to the whole business with the empire. Basically something could be said in high spirits and in jest and you can guarantee that anyone who is not English will more often than not take that the wrong way especially in the context of sport. It's only natural.
Wonderful player and Ambassador for the Game. 22yrs old and Captain of England speaks volumes of your quality. As a Kiwi , can only admire what you achieved
1. You need a jerseytales # 2. Love seeing the old guys while they still have the good memories. Need a Woods, Hastings, Horan, Guscott, Quinnell, BOD, Shane, Dominguez. Love the Al Charrron shoutout! Mark Andrews, Teichman, or Big Os.
one of the great communicators in world rugby. Highly intelligent and incredibly articulate. NZer's hated losing to England more than any other team in the world Carling was everything you hated about the English team but in reality such a self effacing, down to earth bloke. Great character of the game
Thank you for acknowledging the legend Jonah as i am quite sure he would have been humbled with your kind words and reflection! Thank God technology was able to capture his iconic moments on the field which shaped him into a great rugby ambassador off the field. RIP JL!
He's right about the plain white English shirt with just the red rose and a number on the back. I am an All Blacks fan and I feel the same about the old black jersey with just a plain silver fern. It was very powerful symbolism.
Agreed. There was a beautiful simplicity about the old national jerseys which I really miss, especially the old England and AB shirts, and I have replicas of both in my collection.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video Will, your humbleness and modesty plus your pride of wearing the Red Rose really comes through. The response from your youngest son was funny. All Black Andrew Mehrtens told me you are a great guy looks like Mehrts was right. The great thing about Rugby is the respect rugby people have for their Opponents. I only got to see you play once Lions v Waikato 1993 and despite the result I was impressed with your skills and tenacity you played well that day in Hamilton.
I had the privilege of meeting will and his dad at ye old windmill in clapham common in 1998,what a gentleman, realized I was a kiwi and bought me a beer ,I'll never forget that ,he was like royalty to me but a very humble person,
Kiwi here, I couldn't stand this guy back in the day, my interpretation was he was arrogant and epitomised everything I despised about English rugby. Now here he is. relaxed and humble and comes across as an outstanding person. It just shows me how the media build these narratives that are greatly removed from reality. Cheers to you Will Carling. ( As an aside, If I despised anyone in the opposition it really meant that I respected their rugby prowess)
Same here, I was kid when he played and I got my distaste for him through my mum....who happens to be Irish 🤣 all grown up now and no motherly influence, he does seem like a top bloke
Love you will! Loved how humble you are. So much respect for everyone else and in doing so you have gathered so much more that's so much rewarding. God bless
One of the greatest captains we have had. You talked about being passionate about playing for England and for me that is the one thing lacking from the current team.
Marcus Smith epitomizes that lack of spirit for me - technically very gifted but you can tell he's Generation Instagram and every time he sees himself on the big screen during the game he arranges his hair. God, I so miss the Will Carling days.
what a humble man... not what I was expecting...he's dead right what he said about looking at English team and him as arrogant, sorry got it wrong, all the best in the world cup from NZ
Will is a class act both on and off the pitch. He was a world class player & captain who has made a career out of talking down his rugby achievements. Always looked forward to watching him play and now listening to him as a very informed commentator.
I believe that Caleb Clarke found out that his dad, Eroni, was an All Black at about the age of 12 when he was at school looking through a book of former ab's. Caleb was a breakthrough star last year for AB;s against Australia, but chose to follow 7's to Olympics so has not played this year. Will be competing next year against Jordan, Reece, Ioane and possibly ex league star Tuivasa-Sheck for a wing spot, so I have no idea how they will sort that lot out. Will Carling seems a nice fella, good interview.
Really enjoyed watching him play in the early 90s as I was a teenager and I’ll never forget the famous 95’RWC,a great centre partnership he formed with Jerry Guscott and of course the slick hands of the orchestrater @ 10 Rob Andrew..... The game I enjoyed most of that tournament was-bar the final,England vs Australia in the quarters a real ding-dong battle with Andrew getting the spoils with a long range drop goal in the dying minutes.....🏴🏉👌 Iuean Evans would be a good player to be interviewed I reckon 🏴
Too funny. I was showing this to my wife, also a rugby player, and she laughed because on the wall behind me is a life size cut out of Will Carling missing the tackle on Jonah, who was on his way to introduce himself to Mike Catt.
"because you're my dad and you're too fat" hahahahahahahahahaha Awesome comment. I've listened to him in after-matches and Carling is one funny guy. Great sense of humour.
I have to say I miss those insanely violent France vs England games 89-95 . It helps that I am part French so did not mind that much who won, just that it be a great contest. Also love the French nickname for the (specifically) English "Le s rosbifs"
Some great stories here, Will. Can you tell us a few more about what it was like to play the Aussies, especially how you targeted Campese, Lynagh et al.?
Howzit Will, During 1995 WC we were quite look a likes. I have many stories to tell about this, but one stands out. I was on my way to Joh'burg for a business meeting, flying business class in those days, and two "senior" English gentlemen were seated very close to me (just before your NZ game). They aggressively asked me what I was doing on the flight as I (you) should have been with my team....It took some time to convince them that I was not in fact you. This will always stay with me. Cheers mate, have a good one on that. Johan Marais, Hout Bay, Cape town
Onya Will Carling you can also stand among the greats of your time . You also have memories to last your life time well done , from a kiwi fan God bless .
Actually, the French players did say that the English players were good guys, after that night, after the third place game in 95 ... I was studying in England from 91 through 94 ... and France did not win a single of the Crunches ... I never could stay in front of the tv when we always thought we were being done :) Laughing now .. not then ;)
I'm an English fan but I hav to say he use to come across as a miserable sod but I some how liked him through he was a good player him and the underwood brothers
Apparently he used to wear Lions grundis when dropping around to see Princess Di and had the audacity to say "lay back and think of England"...... in the old days he probably would have been destined for the chopping block or the hangman's noose.
Need you back in there Will just to sort out the current squad and tell Borthwick to get the captaincy back into the pack. Mr Lawes will fit perfectly. The old jersey's are iconic because they're simple
I always felt the rumours of him and Princess Di were romantically involved to be an unfair mark in his downfall. The dignity he carried when playing for England was exceptional.
Who would you like to see on the next episode of Jersey Tales?
Keith Wood for my vote!
Richie McCaw or DC
Doddie Weir and Sean Fizpatrick

Him perhaps. Unfortunately, England have a nasty habit of dismissing the opposition before the game. And that is arrogance.
