Are those footing below frost I live in pa and they would be 32in deep and I'd be laying 4 courses down in the ditch, it sucks but at least there's more than 50 block to lay
What you have here is sometimes referred to as a "ring around". Homes built on a slab. Gravel will be shot into the "hole" to level out the ground then concrete with wire poured to the top of the block that are used like a form. For the naysayers, on the comments, depending on where you are at the "code" is different and your allowed to make adjustments. It's called "humoring" as in funny. The fact that he adjusted to the footer being off without any trouble comes from experience. There is a saying in the trade that he's a "mechanic". Mechanics don't panic. Their the ones who get the call for stuff like that. Been a mason over 40 years and his work was fine. Just an observation, looked to be a "side job". He said he'd done one down the road so he's picking up work at this development.

Hey my dude, just subbed to ya a few days back because im about to build my first retaining wall. First time doing block work as well. To be honest, my commonsense, along with all the errors of it, is all i had to go on before checking out your videos. After four videos, i know im not ready. But starting the job tomorrow. Im more of an interior tradesman. Tile, framing, plumbing, etc... The client is fully aware of my level of knowledge and the invoice reflects these limitations. This wall is to act as a seawall to some extent and will be 25 foot long. ANY practical advise would greatly be appreciated. By practical, in this situation, i mean to say, "can be done by one man in 6 days" with 1000$ in materials. I am about to upload a video of it on you tube. Im not a content creator of any sort. My videos are for my own documentation and reflection, and for the benifit of clients.
Hi there how many courses high? If this is to hold back water I would recommend filling it solid and also giving it time to cure before putting water against it.....just my thoughts. If you haven't laid block before it will be a challenge. The key is to make sure it stays level.

The home is at the top of the bank and it is about a 40 foot elevation change at a 45 degree incilne. I plan on putting rebar in every other cell, 90d that the bottom into the footer and stub up through the cells. Every couple of courses I will lay a horizontal rebar the length of the wall and do a horizontal rebar on the top lentil course and backfill all the cells containing rebar with mud. 140 blocks minimun gotta tote it all alone from the street . Ill record some of my progess tomorrow or wednesday. Handling logistics of other jobs while tackling this job.

I too, was wondering about the buckets, but I see your point about having to move down the line since you are only laying one course. Do the buckets get tossed at the end of the job? Just single use?
I clean them I have a water barrel. Eventually they get dry and cracked and I replace them. Horse feed buckets are the best I have found. They last longer than cheap ones.
Yes, I always use a level. You can also go with your string line as you go up. Make sure you have a string line from one side of the wall to the other that is level with where the top of block will be.

When I got there and looked in the trench I couldn't believe my eyes some prick told him wet concrete finds its own level . So I turned up for my next job a week early . Someone built it though but not me

It is not required here in Michigan, but we do use it if there are multiple courses of block needed. Sometimes the print calls for it even if there is 1 course, and I will use it then.

Is the string for elevation, or alignment? Is for elevation (making sure the blocks are at the correct elevation) how do you keep the line from sagging?.
Scott Tillman Pull the line tight with the wood blocks. I can do a video on that when I get some time. The line is to keep all block the same height. Level off block on each side of wall, then the string line will keep everything the same height.... if that makes sense. Thank you and God bless! Have a great day :)
Yes, I does make sense, but when I've strung the line (26 feet), and check the end with a laser, then pull tight, tight...the laser is off about 1/2 " in the middle (of course the laser isn't off, it's the line sagging...
I LOVE the line "Time to get a new laser"!!! No matter how tight you pull your line,braided is the best and strongest however the most expensive, the line can develop a swail from the weight of the line itself. There is a "toy" called a trig made of metal that you can use in the middle of the wall to bring it to the right height. Note, you have to be VERY CAREFUL that you do it right or your wall could end up with a hump,swail or a bow in the wall. Checking the height on occasion is ALWAYS a good idea.
I love to watch him lay block. He makes it look so easy. Only someone who has actually laid blocks realizes just how great his skills are.

Yes, I does make sense, but when I've strung the line (26 feet), and check the end with a laser, then pull tight, tight...the laser is off about 1/2 " in the middle (of course the laser isn't off, it's the line sagging...

I LOVE the line "Time to get a new laser"!!! No matter how tight you pull your line,braided is the best and strongest however the most expensive, the line can develop a swail from the weight of the line itself. There is a "toy" called a trig made of metal that you can use in the middle of the wall to bring it to the right height. Note, you have to be VERY CAREFUL that you do it right or your wall could end up with a hump,swail or a bow in the wall. Checking the height on occasion is ALWAYS a good idea.
