Jim Redgate is a highly sought-after Australian luthier, known for his guitars built for artists such as Ana Vidovic, Pepe Roméro and Odair Assad. This lattice-braced model is an exact copy of the guitar that Ana Vidovic plays. Jim Redgate’s instruments have their own sound and touch. The breath-taking volume combined with rich harmonics and impressive clarity of sound are quite unique. The playability is fantastic, and the guitars are relatively light in weight compared to the Australian standard.
We’ve of course heard Ana Vidovic in concert many times playing on a Redgate guitar, but this guitar convinced us even more of the quality of Jim’s work. The honesty and spontaneity of each note, the magnificent volume, the ease of playing, and the unique sound character of this guitar make it an instrument not only rare in Europe, but above all extremely enchanting.
Luthier: Jim Redgate

i think this is d major!!!!
The original cello score is in G, hence the title

I remember playing and studying this piece, practising it over and over. The beginning is especially catchy for the player. It is a beautiful piece. It is not too difficult to play but you cannot get complacent with it; it demands a lot of phrasing, attention to tempo, and tonality to make it sing as Ms. Vidovic does.
Well stated, I agree.

not too difficult to play? and yet renowned and prize winning guitarist vidovic makes a mistake at 1:40

Ana is the first contemporary classical guitarist I knew and she inspired me to play guitar. Glad to see her again
Full of intensity and musicality, subtle and dramatic at the same time. An interpretation for eternity, difficult to match with any instrument. Bravo!
Love the relaxed tempo. She breathes with music.
But she always come back to the tempo!
Эти ее громкие вдохи слышны на протяжении всего видео...
That's how this is intended to be played. Look up the version by Mischa Maisky and he does this same
Bradley Filley Not really how it was intended to be played, certainly it is the performer’s judgement and interpreting the piece differently is part of a performer’s job, but Baroque/early classical music was certainly not intended to be played rubato
@@marccowan3585Says who?
The bassline is so pure on the guitar, I'm jealous of the ability to add so much to these cello suites, similar to the suite 5 lute edition part ^^

Yes, her Asturias is superb.

Ana is one of the best guitarist out there
yep definitely
listening to you is like star gazing , the instrument is fine tuned Swell Peace
Puzzling to me a few listeners think her playing "mechanical (?)" - the sense of flow in Bach cannot work if it is overdone or maudlin. She gauges her interpretation faultlessly. Also, ask anyone in opera, ballet, drama or musical performance about handling an inevitable mistake - these will happen, to the most virtuosic & experienced. Part of actual talent in performance is continuing smoothly in rhythm & consistent expression through any glitch. A banal skill, perhaps, but essential; she has this down quite nicely.
If you consider the sheer volume of notes and the fact that each note on the guitar involves two hands in perfect timing (one fretting, the other plucking, etc.) then expecting mechanical perfection becomes silly. She's a human being of immense skill and artistry playing Bach, after all. That should be enough for any wise listener.
Ana playing my favorite classical composer J.S. Bach, is perfection personified, and the greatest of the pleasures that can be had.
Bach was a baroque musician
This is actually played in the key of D major. Unless all the C#s are accidentals.
It is on D major but the piece's name is on G major because it's originally written for cello. Most - if not all - the arranged pieces for guitar are played in the key of D
I only know of one guitarist (Andrew York) who has recorded the piece as written for the cello by Bach. It is usually transposed into a key more appropriate for the guitar's voice and fret-board. Normally D with the base E string of the guitar tuned down to D for that lovely pedal tone.
Yes it's transported for guitar
Yes, Bach wrote it for G major, but the guitar transcriptions are usually in D maj. The 6th string being tuned from E to D in some cases.
I wouldn't mind listening to this for my whole life
Un bellissimo preludio di Bach, eseguito in modo MAGISTRALE.BRAVISSIMA!!!

I love everything this woman does. Bravo ana.
Who arranged this one? I found it unusual but very interesting! Great playing Ana bravo!
Hmm, yes, "interesting". I think I prefer the notes Bach wrote, to be honest.
@@lettersquash well he did write the notes and arranging is allowed - he did it himself ! I meant really interesting not cynical just to clarify
@@majaradovanlija9625 No, this arrangement involves additional notes that J S Bach, the COMPOSER, didn't write. That's fine, that's what "arrangement" is, re-writing. I just said I prefer the notes Bach wrote in the original, which I've listened to for decades and know well and aren't the same as those played here. I realise you weren't being cynical. Thanks for clarifying.
This is in D Major.
The transcribed version for guitar is in D major, but Bach wrote it originally in G for the cello.
Sacrilegious!
This low D on the open string is gorgeous...

Rémi Bastide o god that one note muted itself

@@lucastornado9496 Bach's music is so perfect and pure that, when I play it even at my modest level, I feel a physical pain by missing a single note. I'm sure she felt the same.
Rémi Bastide yes
Second take? What does that mean? I've never heard that phrase before.
TickleMeShlomo a second attempt
Bach is just so spectacular. A song for the standing bass, played on a guitar. 250 years later, and it's still superlative.
Its for cello. Not bass
@@chavruta2000 True. So, a song for cello, played on guitar. Go Bach!!!
Isn´t this like heaven? As if we have earned a place in heaven, and now can enjoy whatever there is, guitar playing for example. Anas playing in this Bach Cello-suite no 1 is one of the reasons I long for heaven. I hope to meet her there, but for sure I understand that she is far to young! She belongs to earth, where she can play this wonderful music for young people.
I really think we will hear this very music in Heaven. Bach heard it directly, you can be sure. Some of the most pure music ever written.
I would bet that Mister Bach would absolutely have Loved your guitar version of his masterpiece, which, of course, he originally composed for the violincello in the early 1700s. Beautifully interpreted and performed, Ana. Thank you so very much. 😏💖
At first I didn't like this interpretation as it seemed to lack any fire or emotion you get when you hear this on the cello and she seems to be too ponticello when she plays it but it is sound if not inspiring like some of her performances of South American pieces. What I did like was her mistake at 01:39 I can now confirm she is actually human!! But she played through it like a real pro.
I've listened to many of her performances for years and she always plays flawlessly (even very difficult pieces). But when I heard that, I had to rewind to see if it really happened or if my audio glitched.
I think her phrasing and sound are specially perfect in this piece.
@mojokiss Starting on the first beat of the measure at 1:38 (a#, over a C# in the bass), the 16th notes in the next 2 beats are: a#, a, g#, a, a, g, f#, g. She plays the last 3 notes f#, g, g. In other words, she switched two notes. Very small mistake, and she does a great job of making it "fit". Jazz musicians say, it's not a mistake if you play it with conviction!
Those bass notes tho.. nah
Watching and listening to Ana perform this iconic Bach piece is a Master Class in how to play it on classical guitar. I believe Ana is basing her interpretation on the Valter Dešpalj transcription for the most part. I carefully watch Ana's hand positions and try to match them on my guitar. Thank you SiccasGuitars and Ana Vidovic for posting this wonderful performance...Beautiful audio as well...This is how it's done...
You'd better not play that transcription. It completely violates the structure of the original work
You'd better not play that transcription. It butchers the work awfully
I love the versions that more closely follow the Bach cello version but I also really love the Segovia version with all the moving bass notes
LiJies version is much better than Segovia, obviously not taking away from Segovia. Secondly, most of the guitarists who follow the Bach cello version can't really handle the moving bass notes.
This version wasn't the cleanest in spite of it being the simple cello version.
@@Ryanq1234 I too have seen her version and really enjoyed it. Peo Kindgren does a pretty version too.
The so-called Segovia version (with all the moving bass notes) was actually arranged by Manuel Ponce.
@@stddisclaimer8020 ah okay thanks!

Oh my goodness. Run away with me!
not so good
Thank you Ana for taking me away to beautiful places❣️
This piece from Bach was an inspiration for Steve Hacketts „Horizon“ (on Genesis „Foxtrot 1972).
Thank you Ana, this is incredibly well played with superb tempo. I’ve listened to your performance three time in a row and am struck by how clear you make the melodies sing out. A characteristic of Bach’s music is how his melodies, once heard remain in your head for the rest of the day, such is his genius.
Best guitar version for me ! except the little pain arround 1:35. But over the 10 times I ve looked this video its the first time I notice this.
Considering the amount of notes being played and the quality of sound delivered, I guess I can let go of one small (tiny) stumble midway through the piece. What I admired the most about her is that, even thought she became aware of the slip-up, Ana recovered quite gracefully and that is what admire so much about her playing. God knows, I would've been completely affected by it for the rest of the piece if not the entire evening! Ana is complete master and wish her all the best!
When i play with this recording my notes sound 'wrong'.. some are in tune, but something doesent fitts right.. for example Julia Lange plays the suite ( also very well ).. here together every from my notes are fitting..
I think i recognize Ana play a little own version..
Or am i wrong?
Ummm you mean prelude in D Major....
Bach's Prelude in G Major for cello, transcribed to D for guitar
While I have only praise for Ms. Vidovic's guitar playing, I continue to be distressed by this commonly played "arrangement" in D Major. The arrangement adds an awkward continuo line to the original cello piece by Bach. So it is, in fact, a hybrid piece of music much in the same way that Gounod's addition of the sung melody of Ave Maria is a hybrid piece of music. The difference is that Gounod's melody in the high range is a wonderful enhancement of an already wonderful piece, that addition of the continuo line at the bottom in this arrangement by the undisclosed arranger is overdone, awkward and cumbersome in the harmonic inversions it creates. So whereas the addition of the melody on top in Ave Maria is an beautiful enhancement, the addition of the continuo line at the bottom is, to this listener, a cringe-worthy distraction which undermines the aesthetic foundation of Bach's sublime creation.
Rather than adding keyboard embellishments to the piece and transposing it from G to D. I think a better approach is to both celebrate the fact that the original by Bach is for the cello and to realize that the range of the guitar is almost identical to the cello especially if one tunes the 6th string to D. That makes the range of the guitar only a whole tone higher than the cello. With that realization the optimal key for the guitar arrangement is A major, not D major. Playing the Prelude in A without otherwise altering the score, allows the guitar with the 6th string tuned to D to mimic the cello exactly and to bring the forefront the ways in which Bach's understanding of the cello is intrinsic to this piece. For example, it allows the guitar to play the low notes just before the fermata just as Bach intended them with the resonance of the open 6th string of the guitar replicating the open C string on the cello. In addition, it allows the guitar to mimic the cello in the climax toward the very end. If you take the open string tuning of the cello, C,G,D,A and raise it up a whole tone, you get D,A,E,B. With the 6th string at D the open tuning of the guitar is D,A,D,G,B,E. Makes 3 cello open strings identical in pitch to the guitar open strings, and allows the use of the open B on the guitar to be used at the beginning of the long crescendo toward the end in a way very similar to the way the open B on the cello is used in the same passage.
This whole piece exhibits Bach's understanding of the Cello's technical and expressive qualities as a bass instrument, and in order to celebrate that, this piece should be arranged for guitar in A major. If, on the other hand, you don't want to express the cello in the guitar arrangement and want to embellish and hybridize it as a piece more treble for keyboard and with the cello consigned to a minor role as the basso continuo, you play the featured arrangement. I have my preference, and other people can have theirs.
she make mistake @ 1:39

Her guitar is probably lattice braced or double top not the conventional one. Her technic perfect but the guitar sound.
what I would like to know is who comes across this page or seeks out this performance and then hits the thumbs down....
Not trying to call it out like its a bad thing but I never noticed the mistake (dead note) at 1:40 before. Must have listened to this hundreds of times. Its my favorite rendition, really beautifully done and I like that she picks every note instead of legato.
Dude... you listened to it hundreds of times and only after that you heard (minus) ONE note.
Give her nothing but cred. You heard perfection hundreds of times.
It's time for pianists to start performing with guitars left on stands in the background!
Where would one find sheet music for this? (Or other classical guit music)
Her subtlety is incredible. As if she had written this piece by the genius Johann Sebastian Bach.
