If You Want to Follow Jesus: Go To James the Just

  • Fortunately various students of the early Jesus movement are coming to realize the paramount importance of James, the brother of Jesus, thanks to the work of Robert Eisenman and others in the past two decades. In this reading I offer an overview of the Peter, Paul, and James, nexus and how it most likely can be sorted out--giving James his proper place--largely lost and forgotten.
The full quotation of the Gospel of Thomas reads:
"The disciples said to Jesus: "We know that you will go away from us. Who is it who shall be great over us?" Jesus said to them: "Wherever you have come, you will GO TO JAMES THE JUST, for whose sake heaven and earth came into being." Logia 12.

I have been interested in James’ place in Christianity and that of the family for many years, and have been aware of this discussion. It is, however, interesting to get James Tabor’s view on it and to confirm what I learned 20 years ago backed by updated information. When people ask me if I am a Christian, I often comment that I am more of a Jesus Christian than a Pauline Christian. If Jesus is God’s man on earth, and he is the way, the truth and the light, then why is most of the New Testament about Paul, who never knew or met Jesus while he was alive, spent perhaps a couple weeks with Peter and James, who did not take well to him, and was sent off to talk to the Gentiles, where he made up his own theology as he went along. I have always questioned if some of the texts attributed to Paul were written by or truly attributed to Paul. 2000 years later, it is very difficult to get close to the fountain of truth and knowledge concerning a the origins of Christianity. The Church certainly did spin it to a different advantage, which helped to control the masses for a very long time. These days many people have curiosity and want to get closer to truth. Christianity needs to be updated if it is to survive another 100 years, let alone 2000 years. Christian denominations break apart over some simple ideas, so that today there are between 43,000 and 45,000 denominations world wide.

Well sir, in another month I turn 79 and I am sharing with you this terrific discovery of James, Jesus' brother. I've been spending a lot of time with the Gospel of Thomas in the process. It seems to me that because it recommends going to James about questions, the text of the Gospel of Thomas must itself reflect what James was saying and promoting. Because of that, I'm feeling like the Gospel of Thomas is the place for me to learn more about James' thinking. That is proving fruitful to me. In any case, the best to you in your continued studies and ponderings. Peace. Neil

Jesus sent apostle Paul to preach the gospel for us today in the dispensation of grace. The gospel of our salvation is found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Ephesians 2:8-9. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workmen that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We’re not Isreal, we’re the body of Christ. @@Ibelievethegospel The only person who sent Paul to teach to the gentiles was Paul. You can't use someone's claiming of authority as the authority. Paul claimed authority no one else gave him. He claimed apostleship to the Cor believers but the true apostles only called him a brother. The gentiles were given to Peter so there was no need for Paul to come in and "clarify" Jesus' message. Jesus didn't stutter. He was quite clear in His command that ONLY the 12 apostles had the judicial authority on matters of His church and Paul didn't even come on the scene until nearly 10 years later with a "vision" that can not be supported by anyone. The people with him said they saw that Paul was seeing something but they neither heard nor saw anything themself. Paul probably thought he was doing the Lord's work but he clearly was in NO place of authority from Christ so take his interpretations through the lens of a third hand source and don't ignore those who had first hand sources with Jesus...unless you believe that Jesus sat out in the desert with Paul for 3 years and taught him(as Paul claims) even though Jesus said He would not return to the end of the age AND that the disciples and apostleships should be on guard for anyone claiming to be coming in his name from the desert(exactly where Paul came out of).

Notice that the words: “You are to go to James the just...” from saying #12 of the Gospel of Thomas are advice given in the present tense. This suggests an early authorship for the Gospel of Thomas. My reading of the Gospel of Thomas is that it supports a non-apocalyptic movement of living in the here and now. This message, it appears to me, is what Jesus originally taught and that James then continued. In the Gospel of Thomas, there's no mention of sin, resurrection or a coming judgment. This stuff appears to have been added to an earlier message and has come into the Bible through Quelle (I'm ready to argue) who borrows from and often corrupts Thomas' text to suit their apocalyptic program. I'd love to see anyone's evidence that I'm wrong about this, but the more I look and compare, the more I'm persuaded of it. Ahead of time, I thank you for your growth-promoting correction; otherwise, we can celebrate together this alternative way to freedom to which Thomas (and James) point. Peace.
P.s.: It's fun to notice that Paul quotes Thomas Saying #17 at 1st Corinthians 2:9 and even says: “As it is written....” to introduce it. Looks like Thomas had to be written sometime before 50CE.

@@YaelSharon3410 Thanks for sharing this idea. I've heard that asserted by someone else too. Here's what makes me question it. Isaiah 64:4 uses some of the same words as Thomas #17, but only a few of them. Paul's words at 1 Corinthians 2:9 duplicate Thomas' words precisely though omitting one line). Isaiah 64 is a prayer for God's deliverance, which inserts a bit of flattery to encourage God's assistance. The prophet is bragging that “No one has ever seen any other God do anything comparable to the amazing things You have done for us! So You can deliver us again, if You are but willing.” is how I understand that passage. The promise of being given an unspeakable gift, the point being made by Thomas and quoted by Paul, is totally absent in the Isaiah passage. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts. Peace.

Thank you for your insight. I have a multitude of questions regarding this theology and would very much appreciate your insight.
I believe Paul was so successful at usurping the Christian mythology because he was selling a free pass (so to speak) into "heaven" based on faith exclusively. This would have gone over very well with both Jews and polytheism as both required a great deal of effort (rules and regulations etc).
The second reason is totally my own conspiracy theory in which, Paul was a Roman, Roman's grip on Jerusalem, Damascus... Isreal/Judah was tenuous and therefore the Romans actually implanted/supported Paul to difuse the Jewish/Messianic Jewish movement....
Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

    • @neilhundtoft4873
      @neilhundtoft4873 Год назад +3

Faithfull: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As you say, with Paul's ministry, people were being offered a ticket to heaven based on faith alone. The simplicity of that approach would have a lot of appeal, especially for any potential converts with no familiarity of the Jewish traditions. Paul's success at winning over converts was in large part due to his target audience. The synagogues were places of conversation and learning which welcomed and attracted non-Jews, gentiles seeking understanding and spiritual edification. Paul's preaching and ministry throughout the empire cherry-picked these “God fearers” away from their synagogues and he thus swelled the ranks of his movement with gentiles who were at the margins of Judaism. I can see how Paul could look like an agent of Rome assigned with a mission to neutralize Judaism. Clearly, the movement Paul started had become totally Romanized and un-Jewish within a generation of his preaching. Here's the thing though. Paul is believed to have been executed in the year 64 CE after a ministry of about 25 years or so. The Jesus movement was just getting started with Paul and was still totally undefined. Rome didn't even notice it. It's those rebellious Jews that were Rome's chronic problem. In the year 68 CE, Rome's solution to the Jewish problem, always favoring the direct over the subtle, was to send over ten legions of soldiers to Israel to wipe Judaism off the face off the earth. They destroyed the temple and decimated the population with over 500,000 perishing in Jerusalem alone. So in a very real sense, both Christianity and post-temple Judaism were born new at this same moment in history. Judaism was tolerated by the Romans because it was recognized to have standing as an ancient religion. Christianity survived by being Roman. Peace@@ObjectiveEthics

I arose from darkness, knowing my origin, and destiny.
      And darkness spoke:
      "Proceed no futher, transgressor!"
Why? In what, have I sinned against you?
      Darkness replied:
"In that my kingdom is a kingdom of darkness, and no one who lights the torch of knowledge is permitted here! Now, let us extinguish your painful light, that all may return to the peaceful sleep of ignorance."
No darkness! Those who sleep your sleep do so only because they are first ignorant of your guile. But of this the savior has warned me.
I arise thus, eluding the force of darkness and rejoice to be free from that of worldly ignorance.
I arise from Desire, that which causes the natures to mix, and which seeks to awaken in the fleeing soul a fondness those false delights of lignt that it left behind on Earth, so that it might return there.
      Desire speaks:
"Who are you, and whence came you?"
I am of the seed of the living Father and do not belong to this world- hinder me not! As I seek but to return to the place from I once came.
"I never saw you decending, but now I behold you ascending- what makes you LIE? You are mine!"
I saw you, but you did not see me or notice me. You saw nothing but my vesture, and you did not know me.
      I arise from Ignorance
"Where do you think you are going? Do you deserve to enter heaven? In the chains of wickedness you were captive! You are a prisoner, you dare not judge me!"
And who are you to judge me so? I have not condemned you. In truth, I was chained to the flesh, though now I am free. I was not recognized. But I have come to recognize that the All is being deconstructed. Both the Earthly elements, and the heavenly ones.
I arise to the 4th power, which assumes 7 likenesses: the likeness of the 7 powers:
      1-Darkness
      2-Desire
      3-Ignorance
      4-Terror of Death
      5-The reign of the Flesh
      6-Deluded wisdom of the Flesh
      7-The Vengeance of Wisdom
These are the 7 wrathful powers.
"Whence come you, murderer? Where are you headed, space traveler?"
What held me captive has indeed been killed. And what enveloped me has been defeated. And my desire has been extinguished, and ignorance has expired. In the midst of a world I was set free from a world. And freed from a pattern of death, I recieved deliverance from a heavenly prototype; deliverance from the chain of oblivion which passes away. Hence forward, I shall win my way to that repose where no one speaks of time, of season, of age!

In reading (over and over), I couldn't help but see the different message that it seemed Paul was bringing than that of what Jesus was teaching. And that the book of James and even 1st John were so similar to what Jesus said. Paul's writing seems to have created a very diverse and argumentative foundation for our beliefs. Something sinister or intentional may be the reason for so much of the "Christian faith" following what Paul wrote. Scary.

Sorry for the failure of your spiritual leaders to convey to you what the Bible clearly teaches of which they may be ignorant. My comment below should help a lot. The Berean Bible Society has multiple booklets and online pubs that provide detailed explanations for what I present abbreviated below.
      CHURCH FAILURES
Sorry for the all too frequent disparagement of St. Paul and his message despite the obvious (to the discerning reader) supersession (NOT DISTORTION) of the Gospel of the Kingdom (works + faith) by Paul's message of faith in Jesus alone I Cor. 15:1-4. The timing of Paul's message follows the failures (Acts 1-8) of the Gospel of the Kingdom group: financial depletion, Apostles remaining in Jerusalem (not "to all the world") and limited gospel distribution just to Jews Acts 8) and then only by Jewish refugees expelled by Rome to Cyprus, and other locations outside of Israel.
      INTERPRETATIONS OF LITERATURE
As with all writings and rules, the most recent ones are the ones to follow. We don't view every of the deceased to properly administer an estate just the most recent. Paul's Gospel of Grace is the most recent and what we should follow until Jesus returns.
Even this professor doesn't seem to get it because, James' theme clearly adds works to God's demands in contrast to the "wholly by Grace" theme (not under the Law - Rom 6) delivered to Saul outside of Israel by Jesus Christ himself in a vision to Paul. It's in the book. The word, Gospel is not English or Hebrew but a transliteration from the Greek the meaning of which is good news. There's lots of good news in the Bible : Noah and family not drowned, one father of Israel by which the World has been blessed and, of course the opportunity for deliverance from sins by love and power of God Himself.
That the meaning of gospel in the NT has changed is evident and unarguably true. When we accept that God has changed a failed program for Jews to spread the gospel of the Kingdom to the World into one that accepts all believers in Christ into God's family. Read Romans for new program/gospel and Acts for the description of the transition.
Furthermore, While Jesus held himself up to be followed under Kingdom rules, Paul gave advice (after Jews rejected Jesus as resurrected Messiah) to follow him as he followed Jesus Christ. Certainly, much more realizable than to try to follow Jesus to the temple (now closed) to pay the temple tax or to walk on water or "heal them all".
When we see the fact of the transition from Gospel of the Kingdom with extravagant promises of healings and guaranteed answers to prayer coupled with a works requirement, then LACK OF healings, answers to prayers, instant death for a lie to the Holy Ghost (Annanias and Saphira) are not problems for us to puzzle over. The instant death event is similar to the Law which demanded fatal stoning for a single violation of a Sabbath cessation violation. And the need for miracles as (failed) signs to Israel has been replaced with the less stringent demand
Also note that those who disbelieve Paul's theology are, nevertheless, forced to refer to his letters in order to form a biblically based church: titles of officers, their qualifications and church practices. This seems hypocritical because the church as we know it is TOTALLY ABSENT from the gospel accounts of Jesus' life (favored by most preachers) while our Church life rules come from Paul's writings.

Read the first verse in James. Who is it written to? Hebrews. Who will be going through the Tribulation? Hebrews. It’s very important to understand dispensations. This is why it says in 2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” All the Word of God is for us, but it all doesn’t apply to us.

Rome couldn't arrest Jesus and disciples, as Rome did immediately for other false claimants, because when Rome initially tried to arrest Jesus, they were immobilized. Secondly, because there was a Roman occupation of Judea, the Jewish authorities couldn't openly proclaim Jesus the Messiah, which they knew He was because the Romans couldn't arrest Jesus.

Many people are waking up to the fact that Christanity was let astray for two millennia by following the teachings of Paul who never met the living historical Jesus, was not one of his original disciples, and seemed not to know much about his sayings and teachings as evidenced by his epistles. He invented theology and Christology that historical Jesus never preached. Is it any wonder that he was at odds with James and early church in Jerusalem?

James, all the people who hear Jesus including his family were murdered for a reason! Once everyone was killed, they went about writing their theology, religion of catholicism or the first christian church,. If they killed Jesus because they didnt like what he had to say, why cant people come to terms that they would wipe every evidence of who they were or what they were saying? Why would they leave his words alone? All these evil people were around killing the witnesses? Please ask yourself a simple question, why would they leave his testimony alone?
Paul and Peter wrote a religion once they killed anyone who heard the truth! Beast 2 from revelation, like the lamb speaks like the dragon, like Jesus speaks like an evil ruler, a priest or a pope!
One day, you will all realize the truth! And one day as it says in revelation, you will all mourn and cry for Jesus Christ or Yeshua!

Paul didn't speak much about the abolishment of such festivals as we have some evidence that he still observed them in his own letters, BUT the early apostolic fathers such as Eusebius by the 300's staunchly rejected anything "jewish" or what we would call 1st century Messianic church and these same people who wanted to change the festivals also heavily favored Paul's theology.

Luke doesn't include the death of James the Just or the Destruction of the Temple because they hadn't happened yet. Luke is an historian. Why leave out the most monumental events in the history of the church?
Luke records the names and places of completely irrelevant people and places but he neglects to mention that James was murdered? James was the antagonist in the story. Why leave him out? I would at least have done a victory dance with a, "See, I told you so", at minimum.
Luke shows that the head of the Jerusalem church did NOTHING to stop the Jewish officials from turning Paul over to the Gentiles. If Luke were simping for Paul then he's the worst simp who ever lived. James betrayed Paul like Judas betrayed Jesus.
James was in with the Jewish leadership. By the time we get to Acts 21, the Jerusalem church was little more than a sect of Judaism. There had been priests, Levites, and Pharisees coming into the church for years. They took over that thing. They were safely back under the control of the Jewish establishment. Luke knew that. Paul knew that. But Acts doesn't really tell us a lot about that infiltration - only to mention that priests and Pharisees were joining the movement.
But for James to say nothing while Paul was being hauled away is very telling.

Sounds like a lot of guesswork and innuendo. Certainly, Luke was writing both a history and also a theology. But your statement comes off as an accusation and a reason to discredit him. Luke says this about his work:
Luke 1:1-4 - Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
Why would you imply that Luke was trying to do something other than he admittedly set out to do? It's for the same reason the Ancient Astronaut theorists make the following claim: "Academics don't want us to know that aliens have visited us in the past." It's a "conspiracy" angle that actually works. "The authorities don't want you to know this."
It's the tactic used in the Garden by the serpent. It's an effective tactic.

It is more probable that a resin Jesus and the Spirit animated the followers after the crucifixion than that the Jewish-Christians worshipped the “bloodline” of David. Paul claimed to be the prophet sent to the Gentiles but he preached lawlessness.
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by *setting aside in his flesh the law* with its commands and regulations.Eph2:14-15
having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, *nailing it to the cross* Col2:14
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.Rom7:2-3
(The husband and wife is an analogy of God and his people. According to paul, god died so people are free from the law.)
Jesus warned against those who preach anomian(ἀνομίαν) - lawlessness in Mt 7:22-23, Mt 24:12 "Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold.

Paul was not initiated and i suppose he changed completely the 'holy trinity'...it is not 'the father ,the son and the holy spirit' !!!!! The fourfold inner being is: the god ho theos, the father,
The primordial essence ,or origin, he arche, the mother
The formative thought ho logos, the son
The breath to pneuma, the life principle
    The threefold manifested man
The spiritual body , soma pneumatikon
    The psychic body, some psychikon
The phystcal body , flesh, sarx

Conjecture. Speculation. should have equivocation in some form. His concept of Leadership seems to be constructed out of such persons as Julius Caesar which, I conjecture, is not how Christianity started. What keeps Christianity going is freedom from suffering by acts of devotion to Jesus or the prospect of Heaven. How anyone can overlook the "opium of the masses" as part of Christianity is beyond me, and add to that "self evident truth" such as "do onto others".

    excellent stuff.
except that of course Acts was pseudoepigraphical, by which I mean Luke and Acts are by different authors (and neither author is "Luke").

Where do these bizarre titles Mother Of God, kingdom of God, Son of God actually derived from?
As a theological movement takes shape it uses such catch phrases as if they are real.
But the whole conceot around these names goes right back to Genesis where it claims now people have become like gods to know good and evil! The rest is just hot air.

I think it's the humanitarian teachings of jesus that matter ,the rest is not really valid, if only all christian churches could focus on that, instead of ritual, and argueing over the divinity of jesus ,etc..the christian churches are so backward, not to just focus on Jesus's teaching, and they are so divisive,it's a shame more people don't think like me.

8:00 - hmm, and isn't the Jesus of GLuke actually forgiving (ie identifying the responsibility of) the Jews, rather than the Romans, which would be in line with what you were just saying before?

The Shia Muslims have known what you say for thousands of years. In fact many original converts were fragments of the followers of the Dynasty.

I will tell you in person why James was left out. He was hated because the Truth of God goes against what humanity has adopted as normal. Since he insisted on only teaching Truth instead of setting up a false religion of flowers and roses he was not given the credit that he was due. Another thing important to note, he did not believe in Jesus until he witnessed him ascend, then he realized that every single thing that he heard Jesus say throughout his whole life was true. James was all about the factual side of things approaching God more as a scientist than a believer, with proof already under his belt.
