  • June 14, 1990 - With starting shooting guard Joe Dumars struggling and ailing, super reserve Vinnie Johnson came off the bench partway through the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the 1990 NBA Finals and poured in 15 points, including an 18-footer with 00.7 seconds left that clinched the Detroit Pistons' second NBA championship in as many seasons.
    After going 0-for-4 in the contest's first three quarters, Johnson hit 6-of-7 in the fourth. The Portland Trail Blazers led by seven with two minutes remaining before a quick five point burst from Johnson pulled the Pistons back within two. Johnson then won a jump ball with under 50 seconds remaining, leading to a game-tying jumper from Isiah Thomas, ultimately setting up Johnson's game-winning theatrics moments later.

    Prime example of how much of a team they were. There was superstar talent mixed with relentless effort & teamwork to deliver without worrying about who got the headlines - it's an anomaly in professional sports IMHO
    Vinnie though, so many games he would go on a scoring tear and there was nothing you could do about it. The original NBA video games of 'heating up', I always conjured images of VJ getting going in a game

    Statistically, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Vinnie Johnson are the best guard trio ever to play in the NBA. No others are remotely close. I am talking the actual numbers here, not opinion.

    I remember Michael Jordan being happy that he had to guard Joe Dumars.
    That's because the other two DETROIT guards Isiah Thomas and Vinnie Johnson physically wore Jordan down.
    Isiah was too quick for him (see Game 6 1989 ECF) and Vinnie would put those Christian Okoye shoulders into Jordan's frail chest and you would see Jordan recoil on contact.

    • @ProfessorofTruth
      @ProfessorofTruth Год назад

      You'll never hear or read that in Michael Jordan fairy tale.

    • @123slasher.16

      @@ProfessorofTruth EXACTLY 💯!
      MJ struggled for years to deal with the brute strength of Vinnie in the paint and watch the film of him guarding Isiah Thomas and you will notice how he refused to crowd Isiah off the dribble fearing Isiah would just break him down off the dribble.
      He knew he didn't have the physical strength to guard Vinnie nor the lateral quickness to keep Isiah from going any direction he wanted.
      Dumars was actually his best matchup because Joe Dumars didn't have Vinnie's shoulders or Isiah's quickness.
      It still bothers Jordan today that the film shows exactly what I am saying .

    I watched this game, but I don't think I remember that Kersey was on Johnson when he hit the winner. Kersey had 5 inches on Vinnie, but that pullup off the dribble was so deadly. Absolutely clutch. That Portland team might well have been the greatest team to never win a championship, and they were good enough to come back from being down 3-1. But Vinnie just said, "Nope. This thing's over. Bye."

    This was a game I could not stomach! All the three guards played so nicely in both of the two years of the finals and very well supported bt Salley, Lambeer, James, rodman and Aguire and the tail end guys. This was the other 5 game sweep!
