so glad for youtube, otherwise guys like him and their greatness are forgotten, those of us that watched him back in the day will always remember what a special talent vinnie was
I remember watching this game, also started taping it, after the Microwave started heating up. Friends that missed it live, were glad I did. The Joe was rockin, an awesome 4th quarter.
Hartford Civic Center 1987. Pistons vs Celtics. Got there early to watch teams shoot around. I swear vinnie hit about 50 in a row all around the top of the key. Will never forget it.
This game was moved to Joe Louis Arena because a severe snowstorm caused the Pontiac Silverdome's roof to collapse. The court belonged to the University of Detroit Titan basketball team.
This was really the beginning of something special starting to take place in Detroit. Taking the mighty Boston Celtics to 6 games in the semifinals was an incredible feat.
People do not realize how good he was. He would've started on many teams. And I believe been an All star as well. But he came off the bench and subbed for Joe & Isiah and just killed you.
Detroit boy here. Celtics finally took us seriously after this game. Must see TV with them after this. Ugh, that inbounds pass in game 5 in 87. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Ask Michael Jordan after he broke thru in 91 vs Detroit. Great stuff
Detroit Pistons have played in Detroit Grand Rapids Ann Arbor Pontiac Auburn Hills East Lansing Fort Wayne years back in Detroit these days miss the Palace was nice
They played Game 5 from the 1984 Playoff series vs New York, because of a concert scheduled at the Silverdome. The roof collapsed at the Silversome on March 5, 1985, so they played the rest of the season at the Joe Louis Arena.
Those were the days the GOLDEN ERA of NBA 85 i never forget that season. my lakers won the championship on JUNE that year. and also this is the day that i believe FILIPINOS grieve after one of the CHILD ACTRESS Died. forgot the name of that actress✌.. i believe the whole Philippines mourn the death of that Child actress who died at a very young teen age..
He be starter most teams Isaiah Thomas was captain for a reason he can score play defense lead the team get players involved lead the team all played tough hungry fast
As a DETROITER I can tell you it was a different crowd in the city than it was in Pontiac or Auburn Hills. The asthetics were better at the Joe and the crowd had more soul than in the burbs.
@@123slasher.16 I was born in Detroit. I went to some playoff games in 2004, and it was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think. It wasn’t that far of a drive to the Palace - like 45 minutes. If you’re a real fan, you’ll figure out how to get there. That being said, I’m glad they’re back in the city again. This team is going to be the next great Pistons team. I can’t wait.
How NOT to get blown out by 30 points in an NBA Game. BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING BESIDES SHOOT 3'S AND CATCH ALLEY OOPS!!! The NBA makes me sick to my stomach now.
Vinnie wasn't some millennial spotting up in nice gyms. In Brooklyn schoolyards, wind and weather ruined long, high shots. He found that 1 step inside the lane there was a spot where bigs couldn't contest his flat shot.
so glad for youtube, otherwise guys like him and their greatness are forgotten, those of us that watched him back in the day will always remember what a special talent vinnie was
Can you name 5 underrated legends we don’t know
@@dantedlane2 don't know who you know or don't, but aguirre/dantley/english/chambers/sikma are 5 that come to mind
@@elai3147 I appreciate this I’ll go study
Best 6th man ever. The double clutch shot over DJ in a pressure playoff game=GOAT
When The Microwave heated up there was no stopping him!
I remember watching this game, also started taping it, after the Microwave started heating up. Friends that missed it live, were glad I did. The Joe was rockin, an awesome 4th quarter.
He was the Microwave after all
Unbelievable! The Microwave
Hartford Civic Center 1987. Pistons vs Celtics. Got there early to watch teams shoot around. I swear vinnie hit about 50 in a row all around the top of the key. Will never forget it.
Been on a binge of his highlights. Dude just simply knew how to put the ball in the basket at all times 😂
Name 5 underrated nba legends
That double clutch mid range jumper was incredible...I've never seen this footage before...he set the place on fire...onya Vinnie...magic basketball
FROM THE PLAY GROUNDS OF BROOKLYN..TOO THE BAD BOYS..CLASSY GUY..WE MISS YA MICROWAVE..🏀🏀🏀..
The Brooklyn Bridge, Vinnie Johnson
I'll always remember that double-clutch shot at the end in this game - and his dagger with .7 seconds left to beat Portland.
This is when Danny Ainge gave him "The Microwave" nickname
One of my all time favorites.
Greatest 6th man ever.
This game was moved to Joe Louis Arena because a severe snowstorm caused the Pontiac Silverdome's roof to collapse. The court belonged to the University of Detroit Titan basketball team.
My grandfather took me to this game I was two wks away from turning 9
THE Microwave!
This was really the beginning of something special starting to take place in Detroit. Taking the mighty Boston Celtics to 6 games in the semifinals was an incredible feat.
Kevin Mchale brought me here: "when the mircrowave got hot...dayum".
This was all day and night in Brooklyn’s PS73 park, Marion St park and Brevoort’s Colisuem!
This is why they called him "The Microwave"
Greatest basketball player of all time, the microwave
The microwave
As a 13 year old I attended this game the atmosphere was pure electric. Best NBA game ever!
Man, he was great. The only guy that I remember that PREFERS to have a hand in his face. That final jumper was just insane.
He was a bad man the Microwave
People do not realize how good he was. He would've started on many teams. And I believe been an All star as well.
But he came off the bench and subbed for Joe & Isiah and just killed you.
The calm swagger after doing all of this is impressive.
I still can't remember this guy ever missing a shot
He cooked the Boston Cletics ... unstoppable!
Microwave!!!!!!
They dont build them like him no more...a Dtown legend ,,A joy to watch
Detroit boy here. Celtics finally took us seriously after this game. Must see TV with them after this. Ugh, that inbounds pass in game 5 in 87. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Ask Michael Jordan after he broke thru in 91 vs Detroit. Great stuff
I still wonder why Isiah was inbounding. He should have been receiving the ball .
when Vinnie got going, there was nothing you could do.
Vinnie 🕰️😋❤️
Jesus Christ!!! The Microwave completely unstoppable this night!! What a performance from V. J!!!
Damn the Joe was rockin!
Hated the Pistons in this era. But absolutely loved Vinnie!
I was a Bulls fan, so same. The microwave was always awesome to watch. One of the few guys that really bullied MJ.
Who else is in the comments for the microwave comments?
that was beast
Without taking threes
Hey college basketball player from MCLELLAN Community College in 1976 in the student lounge, playing pool.. Ruby Bridgewater the quiet one. 😀
This dude was amazing. Straight up just looks like somebody's uncle. lol I hated watching them beat the Bulls.
no stopping the microwave once he's hot
Detroit Pistons have played in Detroit Grand Rapids Ann Arbor Pontiac Auburn Hills East Lansing Fort Wayne years back in Detroit these days miss the Palace was nice
They played in Grand Rapids?
Which year??
Tommy Heinsohn had a flat shot like Vinnie, developed in church gyms where the ceilings were low. He hated a lot of Pistons but liked Vinnie.
Brought to you via a dumb move by the Seattle Supersonics. You're welcome.
I would b rooting for jordan then bam Vinnie Johnson would light me up lol ..#microwave
Didn't know Pistons played some alternate games in Joe.
They played Game 5 from the 1984 Playoff series vs New York, because of a concert scheduled at the Silverdome. The roof collapsed at the Silversome on March 5, 1985, so they played the rest of the season at the Joe Louis Arena.
His form looked terrible but that shot was automatic!
Clear travel at 1:20...switched pivot feet
como olvidar las grandes hazañas de los malosos de Detroit con el microndas listo para cuando el thomas ocupaba relevo
Those were the days the GOLDEN ERA of NBA 85
i never forget that season. my lakers won the championship on JUNE that year. and also this is the day that i believe FILIPINOS grieve after one of the CHILD ACTRESS Died. forgot the name of that actress✌.. i believe the whole Philippines mourn the death of that Child actress who died at a very young teen age..
He be starter most teams Isaiah Thomas was captain for a reason he can score play defense lead the team get players involved lead the team all played tough hungry fast
The Microwave was just one of the ingredients The Pistons used to place around Isiah to win titles.
What was the broadcast team thinking at. 0:48 - look at the crowd? How about just keep the camera on the game.
As a DETROITER I can tell you it was a different crowd in the city than it was in Pontiac or Auburn Hills.
The asthetics were better at the Joe and the crowd had more soul than in the burbs.

Never understood why they never played more games at the Joe. The Joe was rockin! V.J. was a beast!
Tommy heighnson please will you please.
How NOT to get blown out by 30 points in an NBA Game.
BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING BESIDES SHOOT 3'S AND CATCH ALLEY OOPS!!!
The NBA makes me sick to my stomach now.
He was better than Bird
OOHHHH!!! Even as huge Pistons fan, I wouldn't go that far!
C'mon Man! He was better than Jordan and Lebron!
1:56 What is a Puntus?? I dont get it
He's "unconscious".. LOL
thank you
Unconscious
Me 😂🙂
1:18 and 2:07 he traveled like a MF.
cookiegate he travelled in 1:18 - moved his pivot foot. 2:07 he didn’t watch it again he dribbled right before the hop step.
LOL. Watch again in 2:07 when he catches it he moves his right foot then his left. Microwave had an imaginary pivot foot.
Oh i see yeah you right
travel at 1:20
yup u called it
A pivot doesn't count as a step
When he catches the ball he pivots on his left as he turns to the basket, he then switches to his right, and then back to his left.
In today's NBA, that's not a travel. :)
Travel, LMAO! Ever watch Lebron play?
Vinnie can score but damn his game is ugly ,esp his jumper 🤣
Vinnie wasn't some millennial spotting up in nice gyms. In Brooklyn schoolyards, wind and weather ruined long, high shots. He found that 1 step inside the lane there was a spot where bigs couldn't contest his flat shot.
